Fade out interior lights

Hello,

Currently, my car has a very simple circuit that controls the dome light. Open a door, it closes the circuit, the light comes on. I would like to hear from those that have more electrical experience than I on how to go about making the interior lights fade out. I'm handy with the soldering iron, have a pretty good grasp of electronics, but lack the experience. Is there a fader control I can swipe out of another car and integrate somehow? Does someone have an idea of how to build a fader from components?

Scion TC interior lights fade. I dunno about xB and xA but I'm sure someone with a Scion would know.
