How would you ship amazingly huge VIP wheels???

Just asking. My friend bought wheels from AME_VIP from Canada, and this is how they came. Lips got damaged by shipping and there was no insurance on them. Such a waste for good wheels. 
 
Anyone have any ideas?

And this is how they showed up at UPS over here. Its sad...to punish such awesome wheels to be cheap on packaging and not insuring them coming all the way from canada.

I would expect better, especially after paying [B][SIZE=4][COLOR=red]$2700[/COLOR][/SIZE][/B]....but maybe i havent shipped out that many huge wheels. What would be the best way?:pat:

wow thats complete bullshit.  They should have been wraped in plastic and then placed in a strong cardboard box with more cardboard around the faces to protect the lips.  Its obvious that this seller was too lazy, and didnt give a care about the wheels.  Id ask for shipping back, but who knows what you can do with all these shady people.

that's usually how u ship wheels with tires attached. that's how tire rack ships them out as well.

what happened was that customs tore it apart and didn't care to repackage it properly.

so basically you're saying what happened is normal and unavoidable, as far as customs taking apart the packaging. Is there anything that can be done so they wont do that, or someway to guarantee another set thats shipped internationally wont be destroyed by them?

I don't know, you'd have to get insurance I guess.

no matter how good the the wheel-tire is packed, it all depends on how the customs officer re-packs it.

standalone wheel-rim (without tire mounted) is simpler and a little safer when goin thru customs. It can't be that difficult to re-tape the box right ?

I guess the best way to ship a wheel with tires attached would be to BOX THEM UP. This way the customs official can easily re-pack them.

Thats how my auto Couture wheels were shipped and I was pissed as F*ck since I paid $375 on shipping alone and this was just from cali.

Everytime I have recieved wheels with tires attached, they have always been plastic wraped and boxed up.

if those wheels were indeed shipped like that then yeah, that's a bit under packed. It would probably have made it ok if it was domestically shipped, but int'l is totally different. This is why I try to avoid int'l shipping as much as I can. If I do go int'l, I make sure that it is safe and easy for the customs clerk to repack.

with tire and wheel attached, I use thick foam / bubble sheets and two layers of card board on each side of wheel, then I use an entire roll of tape to tape them up together. I make sure the card board and foam will not detach, the foam insures me that the lips don't get damaged even if a retard shipping clerk drops it.

The seller isn't a shady person, he's a respected member of the forum, and judging by the amount of work he went to to fit those wheels, I think it's safe to say he cares about them.
 
Maybe he just underestimated how incredibly brutal shipping and customs can be.
 
My wheels got shipped in big cardboard boxes and well stuffed, but the boxes themselves had got beat to a floppy mess.

Even you stated that you got wheels that were BOXED.  I understand that I do not know the seller personally, but from the way he just put two pieces of cardboard and little tape on the rims shows me that he didnt put much effort into paking the wheel at all. On top of that, he was shipping internationally and didnt even buy insurance. If you didnt know the seller personally, you would think the same.

that really sucks. but dont place all the blame on the seller. customs is a bitch on packages and ups throws stuff around without the slightest care (especially wheels since they are heavy and very cumbersome to transport without a box). even if they were insured you wouldnt see a dime for the damage since ups would blame the seller for not packing them correctly even though it is somewhat common practice for companies to ship rims this way.

from my experience, its always best to place rims in boxes with extra padding/cardboard, regardless of what shipping company i use or how far its being shipped.

the only thing you can do is get the lips fixed/repolished.

yeah, international shipping is a whole different thing.

When I ship nice expensive wheels I asked the buyer what he wants me to do about insurance and marking a price for it.
 
98% of the folks do [U]NOT[/U] want it insured and want me to write some low price so they dont have to pay much import fees / tax.  So far so good nothing bad has happen.
 
Japan ships wheels like that too piss's me off cause the wheels are not for me most of the time. I have seen them shipped like that plus they added bubble wrap with strapping around the wheels and still arrived alittle messed up and its being shipped in country.

Luckily I bought my wheels from Robert!!!:thankyou: Man the packing was impeccable!!! They were strapped, wrapped (waterproof brown paper), custom cut box made from thick cardboard, internal cardboard cover, and even plastic ring around the lips. BEST PACKING JOB I have ever seen for used wheels. :smiley: Customs did not even mess with it. Thanks Robert!!

Yah, that's not how I ship wheels.  I "make" boxes for them.  I usually use 2 boxes since many of the wheels are far wider than normal.  When I ship with tires I still do the same thing, but I break the box down and work around the tire with more cardboard, but the whole thing is wrapped...tires and all.  That is just shitty packing in my opinion.

I'm sorry, but if I were to purchase wheels and knew they would be shipped like that, I would never buy them reguardless of how cheap they were. Then again, it also wasn't smart to NOT get insurance on such a high dollar purchase.

He did a great job rapping them..nice and tight cardboard covering the faces and wrapped and then wrapped again..I have shipped a  few sets of wheels and I used a bigger diameter wheel box when shipped with tires. I shipped my 20" wheels and tires in a 26" wheel box fit was nice and snug and I added cardboard on the faces stuffed with newspaper..$80 a wheel cost to ship fed ex ground..

He probably owns a Shipping Sweat Plant...with naked Japanese women packaging parts while he is up on the top floor in the VIP Box looking down on them making sure their doing their jobs...LOL PIMP juice....:fo_shizzle: :biggthumpup:

Agreed, I shipped some old 16" Odyssey wheels with tires and need huge boxes 26" or 27" but the wheel shops didn't have any at the time, I went to UPS and I had to buy huge boxes (2 rims per box) that were like $20 each just for the box, no shipping. Then buy tons of bubblewrap, duct tape, etc.

Man, i spent the better part of a week preparing and packing the 2 sets of coilovers i sent to Jzz30tt. 2 massive rolls of bubble wrap, custom-made boxes (bought sturdy removalist boxes and cut them up to make perfect size boxes. Then wrapped in nearly a full roll of packing tape.
 
Not sure of the exact condition they arrived in but no complaints from Chris, so i guess they were alright. Perhaps he was pissed because it would have taken hours to unwrap them lol...
 
If i was sending wheels, i would do the same thing.

I had a set of Work 18x13 shipped from japan waaaaaay better than that!  The guy i got them from used grill boxes (like a webber grill).  It worked awsome and i hade no damage to them what so ever.  They were also in a super large plastic bag from upgarage.

i shipped a set of 18s the other day with 275 rubber on them paid almost 150 to have them packaged properly and then shipped. I definitely think that you're most likely the victim of customs BS in trying to get them across the border.   I have received tires from Discount tire and Tire Rack using practically the same approach as you showed above.   good strong tie straps and a lot of thick cardboard with shrink wrap is the norm. 

 What really sucks is that the insurance would probably not have covered the damage unless they turned up missing completely.  It's hard to protect agains this stuff.

What does the seller say about this?

Sorry this happened, btw. That packing looks better than when I got mine from Yokotas13. They were flopping around in boxes, with NO packing or any kind of protection. THEN, they were curbed, AND they werent the offsets he claimed.

I personally know Ian (AME_VIP.) And i know he would never intentionally want this to happen. Many places that ship out wheels with the tires mounted I would say 90% of the time the wheels are packaged individually or in 2's separated by a piece of cardboard. with a cardboard on the top and bottom with plastic straps holding it together. But International shipping you have to be really careful packaging. it gets tossed around like a rag doll. Anyways Sorry again to hear that happen

Wow. I've had wheels, with tires mounted,  shipped from Japan to Connecticut and they were bubble wrapped and boxed up. No damage to the packaging or wheels. That's just complete bullshit.

cuts, dents and curbage on the lips from obvious mishandling, still repairable, but for the amount of money already spent, maybe would have been better to go new.. also with the weds logo on the lip, it wouldnt be the same after the repairs. :sad:

I feel very bad that the wheels got damaged. I loved those wheels.
I'm glad that I am not the only one who ships wheels this way. I have shipped 10-15 sets to the US this way and never had a problem. I also received wheels the same way.
 
Insurance was NOT requested which would have been an extra $100.
 
As for wheelconnection.ca which I have been running for 2+ years, I shut it down due to personal issues.

Again I am very sorry to the buyer that UPS damaged the wheels. I hope that they will have them refinished and enjoy them as much as I did.

Wow looking at those pics makes me sick.  I once bought a set of wheels which was shipped from the mainland to hawaii and the guy packed them very well. He took long threaded rods(same thread as wheel studs) and bolted two wheels together using lugnuts to keep them together. He also added several layers of cardboard between the wheels and on the opposite sides to prevent any damage from transporting them. When they arrived from UPS they were still immaculate.

I also got wheels from {-.-} and they were boxed up so well it took me 15 mins to unpack them. No damage here either. Both ways are good but I would take the boxing if it were up to me cause the guys transporting them cant see what it is if you just mark them as fragile.

Hopefully we can all learn how not to ship wheels. :biggthumpup: Especially such nice wheels, that now have to be refinished due to carelessness. :pat:

Sorry to hear what happened. All I know is cardboard pressed against the lips during shipment is a little abrasive to the clear coat due to vibration. This has happened on 2 sets of Works I purchased. The edge of the lips look like they were sanded down some. I think people need to start using painter's masking tape and tape off the lips before using the cardboard.

He asked me to call him after he saw them at UPS and I called him right away.  Avoiding his calls?  I haven't received any.  I never threatened legal action.  
 
It is the buyers responsitibility to request insurance.  I pay for insurance when I purchase wheels.
