Google 'auto transporting' and you will have a ton of sites come up. Click on one of them and put in the info of the size of car your transporting, pick-up location to drop-off location and you will get numerous of quotes. I was talking with one of the customer service reps and he was very helpful and told me how it works. Pretty much the higher the quote, the quicker your car will be picked-up and delivered to your destination. I got one of my VW's in my sig shipped to me from KY, it was a painless experience(some people make it out to be a hassle, but I thought its easy).

it would be cheapest to fly over there and drive it back yourself, or rent a truck and tow it

The same thing kinda happened to me. I got a quote from KY to UT for $550 but said they were unsure when the car would be picked up. So they returned my deposit and then I went and got another quote for $850 and they picked up in a couple of days.
Another thing I found out about quotes is if the certain companies have trucks going to the same destination as your car is the quote will tend to be cheaper. I was talking with some of the other shipping companies that quoted me for around $1000 and I asked them if they had any other cars going to UT and they said no. So when I got the quote for $850 from this one company, I asked them if they had any other cars going to UT and said that the driver was picking a few cars in the area that are going to the same location as me and that is why my quote was a bit cheaper than the other guys.

Call this guy up Erik Stewart, he is the owner of S&S Auto Transporters , phone # is 502 553 2439, his cell is 502 773 8626, email is ERIK@SSAUTOTRANS.COM
He had shipped my car once from Columbus-Ohio to Orlando-Fl, and took about 7 days, and the other one from Boston -Orlando took him for 4 days only, I was surprised.
He also has experience on shipping a lowered car, so you don't have to worry if he might scrape your car or sumting.
