Pomona Fairplex Cancels The Funkmaster Flex Show!
Fairplex Cancels The Funkmaster Flex Show!
To All,
On August 8, 2007 we received a call from Pomona Fairplex management saying that they are cancelling the event which was to be held 4 days later on August 12, 2007. The reason for the cancellation is that Fairplex deemed the event to be "unsafe" and that our event was "likely to attract an audience that could become violent and/or offensive" because of the type of music and artists that would be performing.
Are they saying that people who listen to Hip Hop music are "violent and/or offensive" people?
Imagine Media Group, LLC. has produced automotive lifestyle events for many years including the Extreme Autofest events. We were co-producing this show with Funkmaster Flex and believed that the event would have been an exciting, safe, and enjoyable event for all. Our audience are enthusiasts of both cars and music which represents a part of an individuals lifestyle.
In late 2006 Fairplex staff had the chance to review Funkmaster Flex's website when we proposed to produce the event at Fairplex. A contract was signed in April of 2007 giving Fairplex plenty of time to review the type of event this was. They then decided 4 days before the event that this was not the type of crowd they wanted and that it did not represent the "image" of Fairplex. Regardless of the celebrity guests and performers, the atmosphere and theme of the event never changed and has always been consistent. The audience coming to the event would have still been the same audience.
If you believe this was uncalled for we ask that you visit www.unfairplex.com and voice your opinion by registering and posting a comment.
We feel this is censorship and discrimination and hope to gain your support.
Thank you.

you'd have to know the terms of the contract in order to know/prove breach of contract. also, the fine print would need to be looked over with a fine toothed comb. clearly, i am not privy to the info in the contract, but oftentimes venues have stipulations/clauses written in.
in any event, i do see your overall point, and it is saddening.

well from an outsiders point of view, it looks to be a common thing ( 2 instances shown in this thread) where they cancel an even that could prove to bring 'undesirables' around. It seems easier to bring in necessary law enforcement/ use precautions to keep the crowds under control rather than shut down a whole event that would bring more revenue to the site. I'm sure they have their reasons, but it's retarded to sign a contract allowing the event to take place, yet a few days before the said event, they shut it down. Why not just say up front that it's not something they would like to host?
