how do you ask for more money?!

[FONT=Arial][SIZE=2][COLOR=white]i got offered a job a little distance further from my current job for $3 more an hour. currently, i take the subway to and from work which is very convient. i pay $3 round trip from home to work and i never drive my car (fill up gas once a month if not longer.. which is nice). But at the new job id have to drive 15-20 min a day  which isnt too bad but with gas at 3.50 a gallon plus traffic $3 increase just doesnt cut it imo. its a promotion so its something id like to pursue, but how do you, professionally, say you'd like to get paid more to make the transition beneficial. in the past i usually accepted the written/verbal offer but given the certain circumstances, and knowing they'd offer more, id like to ask for more.[/COLOR][/SIZE][/FONT]

Cant help you on how to ask for more, but do know that 6k per year wouldnt be enough to make me change jobs. 
 
If you havent already quit your existing job i think you should just be upfront with the new employer, and say you are tempted but the salary is not enough to make you change. If they say no, then forget it... I am sure there are similar jobs out there that would pay more

Its all about having the numbers to back up your request. Before I go to a salary renegotiation, I like to look at my accomplishments over the past year, then put them into some sort of numerical / statistical form. I know that there are lies, damned lies, and statistics- but providing these statistics to the boss / manager makes it easier for them to defend the increase in pay to their superiors. Remeber, its always about making their life easier!

i dont have any debts, just a low car note and rent. but at the same time its a step up and a little more money. ive only been at my current job for a month (just moved out here) but its sucks to have to be re-trained and learn a whole new system. im still waiting on an offer, but i know what their ballpark is. but after thinking how much more id spend on gas, etc (plus id have to quit my other job in order to work the new jobs longer hours) their offer wouldnt really be TOTALLY worth it in the end.

so what did u decide to do?

I'm a corporate recruiter for Honda Head quarters, and I deal with that every day. 
A good response is, "Considering the cost of living and the extra commute to the new location, $3 may not be sufficient enough to compensate the difference of re-locating there.  If there is anything you can do in your power to re-consider a little higher compensation, I will greatly appreciate it".  

Make sure you note that this will not be a deal breaker.  Just a concern.
