family title clarification

I had a debate with an exgirlfriend awhile back about what exactly is a second cousin. 

This is what I thought a second cousin is: my mother has a cousin, right? that cousin of hers has a kid. that kid and i are second cousins.

This is what she thought a second cousin is: my mother has a cousin, right? me and my mom's cousin...are 2nd cousin.

Which one is correct? or neither?

I was always told that my 2nd cousin would be my father's or mother's cousin...just like your ex-girlfriend thought.

So is your girl friend your cousin or your second cousin.  :2funny:

Second cousins have the same great grand parents, but not the same grand parents.

Your mum's cousins are "your first cousins, once removed"
