Kid hacks i-Phone.

17 year old unlocks phone  and is using t mobile sim card
trades phone for a 'sweet' 350z and 3 8gig i-phones
offered a consulting job
is going to unlock and sell those i-phones to 3 other companies.



isn't that illegal to sell the i-phone to some other companies unlocked so they can exploit it? or am i not understanding what this kid is doing.

I will be the first to tell you that all he claims is not 100% true. I was part of the hacking scene since about two days after it started. He stole credit for a lot of people that helped him all of the way. The kid did little more than any hardware stuff.

He can't code very well at all, so most programming that he was claiming he did on tv, was actually done buy a guy named gray (who got an 8gb iPhone out of the deal, while geo gets the car...). He also claimed credit for some information that came from some of the others of us from iphonedevwiki.com That's why the iPhone hacking scene was really quiet for a while, no one wanted to release source code for fear of theft.

I'm not joking either...to my knowledge, this is the first time this info has been posted on a wiki, we haven't gone too public with it.

The article I read about him did mention that he had a lot of help from an online development community.

Isn't that how Bill Gates started up Microsoft?  By stealing Apple's ideas?  At least that is what I remembered from an old movie LOL.

Which article? If it was the one on gizmodo, there is an editor that was in the channels that was informed of the real story iirc. Don't quote me on that though.

He helped with the hardware side and did some testing with some of the European and Russian guys didn't have their phones yet. He also made iphoneinterface which was really really bad code that could not be maintained, so someone else wrote a cleaner version to work with.

He may have "had the first serial dock" depending on how you look at it. I was working on mine two days before he was with another person from the channel, but due to my lack of a quality soldering iron, I could not get some wires soldered to a disassembled dock connector. (If you ever want to see a tough soldering job, try soldering to an ipod male connector....). I never spent the $30 on an actual male dock connector that was large enough to solder to.

Now, it may seem like I'm against him, but it's only for his actions. I got along with him just fine. There is no denying that he is __VERY__ skilled on the end of hardware things, but his actions with the press and not crediting people are just wrong. It may also backfire on him if AT&T or Apple do find grounds to sue on. He has set himself up as the one man target. There is a reason many hackers change nicknames after every single project they work on...

I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens.  Reminds me of that movie "Catch Me if you Can".  The guy was a bad ass con-artist, now he makes millions preventing fraud :biggthumpup:.

These things have actually been up on eBay now for a few days. They're going for about $1200 right now. That kid sure got lucky.
