What divides Sport, and Game

Ok...so my buddies and I were chillen at a restaurant when this topic came up.."You guys think chess is a sport? Poker is a sport"? Some guys said no some guys said yes. Then the dispute began.

So you're telling me that chess is in the same bracket as let's say basketball?

There has to be a line where it separates a game and a sport. I believe that a sport, is when you are trying to score, there is something, or someone that is trying to prevent you from scoring. Defence. BUT...then again...what about tennis? No one is actually blocking you or preventing you from scoring. Just your oponent, but I think it's a sport. What about Poker? There is always someone that is preventing you from staying in the game to score the pot.

So...what the heck is the definition of a SPORT? and a game? Where is the line drawn? So is darts a sport? can anyone help me here so I can go back next week to my buddies place to present an idea about this?

you sweat while running so running is a sport, thats why its in the olympics. horse racers sweat too b/c they're kicking and whipping the horse. its just a short distance so they dont really get their hearts pumping as much as a runner but its pumping fast. so is nascar, their hearts are pumping hard too but thats prob b/c of adrenaline... okay im rambling and have no clue what im talking about here :( lol

Poker is NOT a SPORT. It's just be popularized by TV.

Chess, is a strategy game/thinking game. It was originated as an old game to teach young nobles strategy on the battlefields back in medieval times.

As i said on another forum. Sports generally refers to an competitive game where physical talent determines the outcome. But there are also mind sports such as chess and poker where intelligence is paramount
