Question about OEM air ride. (LS400)

Looking into buying a mid 90's LS400 and will be putting coilovers on it.
The question is how hard is it to get around the stock air ride system? Dose it have to be completely removed?
Any links to tech articles would be great too.

just diasble the air ride module and that should be it. or pull the fuse for it. pretty much disable any power that goes to the air ride... why not just get a controller? at least youll have the adjustablilty incase you need to get over a large speed bump, or a driveway, etc. why not try and find a early LS400 with regular strut/spring suspension would be easier....

I have looked at early 90s car and they either have mileage or cosmetic problems. 

If I buy a controller how much control will I have over the height and is there any draw back on using a controller on the stock setup?
Is there a link to a company that sells the controllers?

some LS400 has stock air suspension. people put the controllers so that they are able to control the system.

one thing I cant tell is by looking at the car, what disctinctions does the exterior car have to tell that it has air suspension or not?

Probably none. The cars are the same. Its just an option. I would just like to know how much control I would have.. I guess I will do a net search.

well theres no exact distinction for the ls400 to see if it has air sus or not. the only way you can tell if the car has it or not is actually looking in behind the wheel and see if the car has coil springs or not. another way is look on the shifter console area. if it has switches designated for the height, dampening, and power then that ls400 has air sus.

Why not just buy one that doesnt have OEM airsus? Stock airride can go pretty low but the shocks/bags wont last long if youre gonna roll like that.

the switches are right above your ect power switch next to your shifter.  there will be one for Sport/Normal and High/Normal.  Also on the bottom left of the gauge cluster there will be an indicator that says "Height" and under that it will either be "Normal" or "High".  you cant miss it if it has it.

my car had the stock air and i replaced it with coilovers.  i had the air ride controller first but i didnt like it.  i like to roll low, so i would drop the car all the way with the controller and it would ride bouncy as hell.  and plus, if you want to raise or lower the car it takes forever with the stock air.  if i was you i'd just go coilovers.  plus, if you buy a ucf10/11 or even a 20/21 with the stock air, chances are it wont be long before you blow the bags with an air ride controller.  i blew one of my fronts within 2 months of having the controller.  just go coilovers man, trust me.

all you have to do to replace it is switch off the air ride using the switch in the trunk.  then you have to disconnect the air shocks from the lines.  it's fairly straightforward.  the front shocks have the unscrew for the lines in the engine bay, you'll see them.  then take off the modules on top of the shocks before you pull them out.
