Accepted Racism
I apologize forehand to vsc staff if this goes against rules. If it does feel free to delete this thread. I would just like to point out something that i found quiet disturbing a moment ago. While searching through myspace i found Plies myspace. He has a video of his own by the name of "100 years". The link is below. What i find disturbing about it is his racism towards the white decent is so bad. I find it very negative for him to be able to talk in the manner he does about the "cracker" locking up all his "*****s". Both terms are very racial. Ive heard many debates on the term "*****". But the fact is, If a white person were to say that word around some African-Americans he would be called out on it. It has happened on numerous occasions during rap sessions and so on. Why is his racism accepted on these websites such as myspace and youtube? With alot of traffic of many ages. Is it because hes black and hes just showing his pain about his ghetto life that is so hard? Because from what ive read there is alot of mixed feelings on this video. I find it very disturbing that its play for him to do that with no punishment what so ever. I am of white decent(mexican/italian). And i have friends that come from an array of backgrounds. But i belive this racism as gone too far. Blacks can say ***** and call white people crackers and thats okay? And as you notice on the forum..***** gets bleeped out but the word cracker does not. Ive never thought the word "*****" was okay to say by anyone no matter what the meaning. But some see it as slang for "my brothers, friends or homies"...coming from a Black person of course. Im not trying to be racist in anyway. Please if anyone takes offense to this on the forum i apologize. Just check out the video and write your input on it. I think this has gone too far.

I agree with you..I'm Sicilian and am originally from Philly. I was a minority..there were white people, there were black people and then there was me. I had the "year round tan". Blacks that talk that crap can kiss my arse...seriously. I don't want to hear about your oppression that didn't happen to you. It may have happened to your grandpa, but get over it..times change. Move on...I mean really. Most of my black friends have no problems with me saying that word..maybe due in part to my hiphop/turntablism background..or the fact that I grew up in a place where I was the minority and knew how it felt to stick out like a sore thumb. But this anger they have is mostly unfounded. I feel their racism is worse than the KKK...like WAY worse. No, I don't support the KKK and I sure as hell don't support these idiots whining about their hard life...you know what..get a freakin job, move out of the freakin ghetto..I did..so you can too. But at least the KKK is kept more quiet and secluded..it's not all over the airways...if there's any opression left it's been created by black people themselves. I am totally not racist...but I hate stupid people and they come in ANY color....

Well believe it or not, racism still exsists today. It's not like it was back in the 60's, but you can still see it today.

If you can't do the time, don't do the crime. If he's complaining about the time doesn't fit the crime then what will be the reasoning behind that??
"sup potna, lets go gank someone fo' dey chedda. The worse we'll get sentenced for is just 5 years or so? After that, we'll be out again. Lets do it, it'll be fun!"
I personally don't use the N term nor do i use the C term. I live in tx and there are plenty of country white folks. Of my 29 yrs of living here, i have witnessed more racist black folks than white but whatever.. Im a minority living in a white man AND BLACK man's country. I do my own thing and make my own money so i can roll VIPed. werd 2 yo motha

When I first read this thread I really wanted to say something and speak on it but I had decied to let it go but I can't help to sit here w/o adding my 2 cents so here's all I'm gonna say about this:

If you don't like to listen/hear it then
don't listen to it (FREEDOM OF SPEECH!!!) and yes times have changed but not by much as far as racism is concerned, espeacially in the south where Plies is from!

So your sayin that because if your "hiphop/turntablism background" that makes it ok to use the word? Hahahahaha! WOW! I'm not gonna lie, my brother C4President and I say N*** ALL THE TIME and I know it's ignorant to use it and say it but it's just become a way communication between some African americans sorta speak..... But media is most to blame for that (IE I'm pretty sure that more African Americans & Non-African Amricans use the word more now since the "Dave Chappell" show has aired)
elpresidente;95108 wrote:I feel their racism is worse than the KKK...like WAY worse.
That's CRAZYYY!!!! They aren't going around burning crosses, buildings, churches, etc. so for you to even through that in for compraission is wild!
FYI-I just herd in the news today that in Washington D.C. that several white students at a school
carved KKK into a black person

I like Plies for the fact that he's not afraid to share his faults and struggles! That is his job, to share and be the voice of what so many people want to say. It's gotten your guys attention. And when most rappers write their lyrics, alot of it is coming from the hard times they are dealing w/ AT THAT TIME IN THEIER LIFE. Also until you live in his shoes and really know his struggles then that's when I feel you can lash out on him or whatever.....

Many people arn't as well off as you are and don't have the means to move out or go any where and I'm sure he may vist and go back to the ghetto but I doubt he still lives there??? IDK
elpresidente;95108 wrote:But at least the KKK is kept more quiet and secluded..it's not all over the airways
This song is not over the airways and I highly doubt it will even be played on the mainstream radio stations, unless of course folks are making a big deal out of it like the media tends to do
elpresidente;95108 wrote:if there's any opression left it's been created by black people themselves.
THAT IS A VERY BOLD STATEMENT, opression still exist becuase people choose to remian ignorant! Opression is still around and kicking and "BLACK PEOPLE" are jus trying to fight what is still left of it today, so don't knock them for wanting to face it and get rid of it

I'm not a fan of ignorant people but I know until they are informed about certain things then they will be ignorant. And I'm not calling you a racist at all but usally saying "I am tatally not racist" is a scapegoat for trying toclear you from being called a racist!
ELPRESIDENTE- We've been pretty good friends up and till know and I don't want a topic like this to ruin or friendship in any way, this is just a normal debate (at least for me) I appreciate you being fully honest in your comments and ironicly in comparisson you have just did what PLIES has done by sharing your feelings on a situation, maybe by not saying Cra** or N*** but by sharing how you feel and think about this........

Yes racism is alive and healthy today, and it is all over the place from the leftovers of the 60's civil rights movement to the anti-white type livin in todays black culture, but more prevalent against the brown man. Seriously stop and think, black people talk about slavery and oppression for a little over 200 years...... Mexicans? over 500 years. we have the world's weirdest paradox, we are hated here and thrown out, but nothing is truly done to prevent us from coming back in because if it was done then this country's economy would go down the drain. and before anyone argues that point just ask yourself, when was the last time you would have ever of thought of washing dishes, working in a field picking fruits and vegetables, or even roofing during summer for minimum wage or less?
I'm just tired of all the racism period, I was born in the U.S. in a state (california) that has been in my family's history longer than it was ever owned by the U.S. yet my family from Mexico who have ties here due to our family history are considered illegal aliens? hahahahahahaha nice here before all other races yet we're the immigrants hahahahaha
anyways off my soap box

The reality is "Racism exists"... period... Latinos with fat wallets vs. those without. One region vs. another; light skinned blacks vs. dark skinned blacks; rich white people vs. poor white people; Middle Easterners- one family name vs. another family name... the Jews...oppressed; the Irish... Oppressed! You think it's just racism, but this kind of thinking leads to a whole other set of discriminatory issues, and the fact is that it all goes hand in hand. What it really comes down to is individual responsibility. What Plies could have done was deliver his message in a more cognitive and thoughtful manner so that everyone would think about the real issues; problem is, he would Bankrupt the record label with poor sales. The CEO of the Parent company (A White person in most cases but not all), could say "We don't endorse this sort of thing", but didn't. Instead he asked, "What's the bottom line?" Individual Responsibility..... A better debate would be , What would you do to change this guys Image?..or If you had the opportunity to Influence the youth of this country like Plies does, how would you do things differently? Let's insight some thought into this instead of flaring up tempers.
urmyhero4now
I understand what you are saying here, but the truth is that the things Plies says (though ignorant in delivery) in todays world has many listeners/followers, not necessarily in the lyrics, but in how one feels of the bleakness of their own situation. I personally was floored when I first heard a 40 something conservative Caucasian male say Tupac was his favorite, speak about how deep he was, and nearly come to tears. He later ended his own life. It was about his own personal struggle.
Damn, am I ranting on, didn't mean to do that.....

Um, don't listen to him? You are tired of it? What are you going to do, protest it? Then you'll be the one who's being 'racist' (in people eye's). Just because he talks about how he's so oppressed, and tired of the 'white man' keeping him down, isn't going to start a revolution or anything, so just leave it be.
Every other race slams on white people and america for their problems at one point or another. I think that's also called racism? I may be wrong, but who knows.
Either way, just leave it be, if you don't like it, it's just a music video and a song. If you don't like the person for his views, don't buy his cd's, don't listen to his music, and just don't support it.
This thread should be shut down before it get's too violent.

Bingo. That's all I did...executed my right. Listen, I don't think you're looking at my angle correctly. I used a reference
as association. Do I say it every day? No, do I say it every week? Depends, there's only certain friends I say it to out here that we do some in a comradeliness way. It has nothing to do with anything from anyones past. It's more of a friendly gesture said to one another in a personal way. I won't say it around others because I know they won't understand the meaning we're conveying, but I don't feel I'm oppressing anyone by doing so. In fact the actual word has NOTHING to do with black people in the first place. Is it racist...in it's real form no..but as society has played it..yes. Take the word *****rdly for example:
Grudging: petty or reluctant in giving or spending; "a *****rdly tip"
the route word means:
A person of any race or origin regarded as contemptible, inferior, ignorant, etc. A person who is economically, politically, or socially disenfranchised.
But see where it all gets confusing is it's close word relatives from other languages that mean "black" as a color, not as a race or skin tone. Such as:
The ordinary French word for "black" being noir. Both negro and noir (and therefore also nègre and "the word in question") ultimately come from nigrum, the accusative form of the Latin word niger, meaning "black". The Italian word nero is also related.
So you see there's several words from several languages with different meanings that ignornace itself has turned into something bad. The words themselves aren't bad, it's society that has made them become what they are.
The same goes for what I always see and hate to admit. I do believe they get discouraged because they are easily identified and people show prejudice, but it's way past time to get past racial profiling. There are differences in every culture, but the thing is, we must learn to understand our differences and accept them, not hate on them. This goes so far past just black people in general. Yes, not all blacks have that screwed up mentality. Look at all the stereo types laid out: Not all blacks are lazy, not all blacks don't want to be educated and not all blacks sell drugs. There are blacks who take pride in who they are, despite the fact that they may not know all of the history to their roots. It's all in what is done by the individuals...but I hate seeing those who just do it..to do it or to be seen as "cool" by other blacks..I mean why? That's self oppression. Do you see what I was getting at now that I laid it out a bit more? I have best friends who are black, white, brown, whatever color. Do I give a shit what color they are? NO...I care about if they're a good person or not, the color of their skin I could care less about. So don't stereotype me either...I grew up in an area full of this hate..much of it hate within blacks themselves..calling other blacks who didn't feel sorry for themselves as sell-outs to the white man..wtf is that? I mean really. Philly can be a great place..but it can also cast a dark cloud around itself..which is why I left....I live in the melting pot of the world. We have EVERY color here. Look at our crime rates, look at our acts of violence...hardly anything. Yes, things do happen from time to time..and it's usually someone not from here or new to here. It's rare now-days when it's a local (but it does happen, although rarely). When someone gets shot here it's headline news for a week or more. It just rarely happens.
Sorry, I got to rambling on a bit..but you see what I'm saying? As far as the KK thing...dude. Seriously I think those guys are idiots, and yes what they do is rediculous...but the statistics speak for themselves I'm sorry to say. Let me tell you something that effected me when growing up. I worked at a restaurant with a mixed staff. One of the black guys was spraying these girls (mixed, both black and hispanic) with a cleaning solution. WTF for we'll never know, but I told him to stop it and even swatted it out of his hand and told him to stop being so mean to these girls. I warned him that I'd have to tell the boss if he didn't stop....he kept doing it. I had him fired. He was fired for being an idiot and an prick. That weekend at a club I DJ'd at he showed up and put the barrel of a gun in my mouth. Yes....he didn't pull the trigger and was mobbed by my other black friends who were in the club as well as the bouncers. We never saw or heard from him again. Did it make me hate black people? No, my black friends came to my rescue. It was one guy who was an idiot. I was attacked by a dog before..viciously...do I hate all dogs now..no. I've had a few pitbulls of my own since. I'm not ignorant...ignorancy breeds these feelings, thoughts, and actions.
Just wanted to clear the air...

I apologize for bringing up such a stir. I was just pointing out something that some may have not seen yet and we could have a positive debate about it to where no one takes it really personal. The people who are i would like to please ask to take it to pm's. I just have been noticing alot of "accepted racism" in many cultures not only black(african-american) or white(caucasian). And it bothers me some that someone who has the influence that he(Plies) has to be able to state something so racist..in the way he has. I believe you have every right to speak on your struggles and trials that you have gone through your life. I have gone through alot in mine. But i dont put myself out as if im angry at anyone. All in all you can take yourself out of the bad areas and put yourself in a group of positive people. Yes it may be harder then others. But that is the point of working harder for what you want. Not to sit and gripe about it. Thats what got the people out of the slump in the first place. They finally realized that what they were doing by sitting and just complaining was not working. I have just recently figured that out myself. I use to just try for a little and after something got in my way..i would give up. And blame everyone but myself. Take consideration sometimes that your problems you face are because of your choices and actions you have taken. Also in your "homeboy's" lives. They made choices. If your boy didnt pull that trigger i bet you he was kicking it with the guy who did. I dont want to get into detail on my life, but i fell into the same trap. I was with the wrong people at the wrong time and i did time for it. And it helped me realize that you know what. Its all up to you. No one else.

i think we are all overlooking an important issue here...who the hell gave Piles a contract? alright, racism is here and unfortunately it is here to stay. but i don't think a half-assed rapper is gonna change anything.

True, I hear this all day around my little convenience store.
I am not going to say my opinion, but yes this thread has be very civil, it surely shows our level of maturity. If this were posted on some other forum I bet it would look exactly like the youtube responses...

the only thing I'm going to do is teach my children racism is wrong and that it only destroys humanity.
hopefully, they can live on through those words and tell their friends and maybe over the next many years racism can slowly be weeded out. because honestly, we have way too much to deal with on the outside and so many people who hate us merely because we're all Americans. blacks, whites, yellows, purples, reds, greens...we all need to come together and fight for what's RIGHT, not against eachother. that's what our enemies on the outside want us to do...destroy ourselves from the inside out, thus saving them the hassle of doing it themselves. with all the crap that goes on inside our own country, others around the world are looking at us like idiots. come on people, get a grip on life and lets do what's right.

I'm white, but I'm Jewish. I can't tell you how much I have been harassed in the past, but the fact is that White people can still be a target of racism, just like everyone else. The problem with racism is it will only go away when children are raised in a society free of it. It's a matter of fact that hate is taught through childhood, and therefore carries on into adulthood. I think a lot of it also has to do with the fact that people raised in an area of predominantly one race/culture will look upon others as outsiders and can therefor segregate them. That's what I love about California; everyone is kind of mish-mashed together, which I feel is the way it should be.
All this rapper is doing is spreading hate, IMO. If you want to end the prejudice, stop it at its roots. All he will do is provoke non-Blacks into becoming offended at him, continuing the perpetual wheel of hate.
My two cents; I love everyone equally.

i really don't want to get too much into this thread, but i do have one thing to say. you cannot stop racism. you know what it is? it stems from stupidity. it's more of the "i don't like you and i'm not clever enough to come up with an insult, so i'll just make some observation about your ethnicity". simple as that. wether it be skin color, language, culture, traditions.. it's just ignorance. and it's handed down from generation to generation. seriously though.. you can look at anyone and make some kind of stupid assumption based on what someone looks like, talks like, or acts like. but these are all based on steriotypes. people don't just pull steriotypes out of their asses. they obviously developed by some kind of consistencies observed in one ethnic group. but it's stupid people who keep it alive. white people don't use washclothes, black people like chicken, mexicans don't have insurance on thier cars, jews are penny pinchers, middle eastern people are terrorists, hindus work at 7/11, indians are alcoholics, australians own sheep farms, asians can't drive, italians are mobsters, french people are assholes, germans poo on eachother during sex, colubians are drug lords, irish are poor trash, blah, blah, blah.. all these observations came from consitencies tied to ethnic groups. doesn't mean they apply to individuals. no one can 'cure' racism.. anyone who complains about a specific ethnic group being racist is probably being racist and vice versea. doesn't mean they are doing so with hate toward that ethnic group..

I've read some baseless comment sand claims so far in this thread and I think it's funny to hear what "color" people consider themselves. Granted none of us made things this way, so it is what it is. "Im white (mexican/italian/Jewish)" is a statement that cracks me up.
First off, Italian (esp Sicilian) is about the closest thing to African as you can get. Many have African blood in their veins if they look back far enough into the history books. Many just dont like to or care to admit it.
Secondly, Ive yet to hear anyone of Hispanic decent refer to themselves as "white" until now. Understand please, I'm not busting balls here, simply trying to show things through a different perspective. What a person calls themselves is what they call themselves I guess.
As far as Jewish folks go, on one hand you hear many identify with their own inherent "jewishness" by referring to themselves as a "race" of people, but then often turn around and identify themselves as "white". Does anyone see what I am getting at? The last time I checked, science has only ever identified THREE races on this planet (according to skull shape) Caucasoid, Negroid, and Mongoloid. I just wonder why we feel the need to fit into these neat little categories anyway.
Bottom line...as each successive race, nationality, "color", etc. came to this country over the last 300-400 years, every nationality that was new to this country was considered lower-class and often sub-human. And in turn that new crop of arrivals would look upon the next wave of immigrants as lower class than themselves in order to pull themselves out of the prejudicial gutter. Didnt matter what country or continent anyone was from either,it was all about the order of arrival... Italians, Irish, Jews, Chinese, you name it. We as human beings are experts at pointing out our differences more so than our commonalities. Sad but true.
The reality is that the KKK at it's inception considered Jews, Blacks, CATHOLICS, Italians, and any "person of color" to be sub-human. If you were not a WASP (White Anglo-Saxon Protestant) then to the klan you are/were not accepted. Period.
After all of this rambling let me say this: the term "cracker" carries nowhere near the oppressive weight that n_____ does. Never has, never will. Why???? "Cracker" does not have 400+ years(not 200 like someone here claimed) of forced slave labor, torture, killing, breakup of families, and BRAINWASHING behind it like N----- does. The infrastructure of this entire country was built on the backs of mostly African and some Chinese (railroads) slave laborers FOR FREE.
SOOOOO, the next time the word "cracker" bothers someone, give the numerous ideas that I just laid on you some thought.
Lets stop keying in on our differences as being negative and CELEBRATE them.

We're all human. Bottom line. If you had a group of cats and dogs and were told to separate them..you'd put dogs in one group and cats in the other. Not white cats here, black cats there, etc. So why should humans be any different?? We all fit the same bill to me...

I brought this up to Pancakes on AIM when he asked why I said black people.....and he referred what you just referred to..I said well, you say white people..so what's the difference? He said "good point". I mean..it's all relative people. Each of us can do our part to stop the hate...don't cop out saying you can't do anything to change it..you can't, but
WE can as a whole. The more of us that put a stop to the hate, the smaller that thorn in our society gets.

Thats finally the input i was looking for. I noticed we were getting alot of "one person is not gonna change the hate and racism.""its gonna happen and there is nothing u can do about it so just dont listen to it". Thats the problem here. We have too many followers in this community. Too many back seat drivers who just want to sit and be quiet. Speak your mind in a positive mindset and stand up for what is right. So what if you think one person cant make a difference. There has been many occasions in my life when someone has said one thing. And i didnt stand up right away and be like "yea thats right." But i let it sink and i remember it. We can change it. "We" can do anything.

see the funy part about it all is
THere is no other other minority (to my knowledge which isnt huge) in the us that refers to themselves at _______Americans
Latinos
and Blacks
and some far east (philipinio, and such)
Now, dont call me a smart person, but the only reason people try to differentiate themselves from others is to be noticed.
Why need to make yourself more known? TO take advantage of it
we dont have an association for the NAAWP do we?
no...

ebruce2.. i don't agree with your view of the word cracker. i don't even think most white people know what it means. most people will think of a white, salty, flakey cracker. honestly, i know this. i've asked tons of white people. the terms is actually reffering to a slave owner who cracks a whip. i don't see how the word cracker is less or more offensive then the 'n' word. it's a term that ensinuates that all white people are descentdants of slave owners who would willing to inflict harm on a black person by means of a whip to provoke forced labor. right? hows that gonna make a white person feel? guilty that they are white when they probably would never have any desire to take part in slavery. there have been white slaves in history, but no one ever hears about that. and if a white person is proud of thier ethnicity, then they are considered a racist. yet if any other individual from another ethnic group displays pride of thier ethnicity, it's common place and accepted. and white americans are no different than black americans, asian americans, mexican americans (ect, ect) so why would black people preffer to be reffered to as african americans if they aren't from africa? if your born in america, you are an american despite where your parents or grandparents were born. i'm just trying to understand the term 'african american' a bit better. i'm not black, but i'm sure somewhere down the line in history, some of my ancestors were born in an african country. so should i reffer to myself as african american?

There are ignorant/racist people in every city around the world and they are every color of the rainbow. The way our society is set up, it will continue.
The important part is to see ourselves as individuals and not as a collective. I'm sure most of us here are educated and know the difference between right and wrong but alot of kids, teens, young adults, and adults still don't know the difference because of the people they are grouped with. It's really not their fault, they're just trying to be accepted.
I feel that if we want to change this hatred, racism, and ignorance, we have to nip it in the bud.
It really starts with politics and education for future parents. If parents know the difference between right and wrong and work hard for their children to succeed, then the children will undoubtedly turn out the same.
black
white
brown
yellow

Whatever you are, if you act stupid, I will more or less resent you for your stupidity. I remember back in highschool the blacks, white, brown, kids would be very immature and terrorize any clique that is smaller than their own. Asian kids act dumb too but I only seen little aggression towards others while in school. On the streets it is worse though, everybody would fight each other and fight within their own ethnicity. Didn't make sense to me then and doesn't make sense to me now...
That's just my take on it.
