Staggered Wheels?
hi all,
I just wanted to ask to see is there are any advantages of cars having staggered wheels? I dont quite understand fully what the full purpose of it?
Like for example, cant you have 10" width all around but just have different offsets? Or does it have to do with rubbing on the inner suspension parts on the front with having a wider wheels compared to the back when turning the car?
Sorry, if this was repeated, but I tried to search using the key words "staggered wheels" but I only found FS threads with staggered wheels.
thank you in advance everyone :)

Well, since the 10/11 stagger is soon going to be the standard around here (going by a few posts i have seen), i dont think its an issue with clearance; But then the opposite question can be asked "why not have staggered wheels?" - is it so you can rotate tyres to save a little money?
In secondhand wheels you are not going to find same width setups very often, if at all - because its just not popular in Japan.
and if you are getting brand new wheels in custom offsets, then obviously money aint a thang and you might as well get the widest wheels possible for the back!

they look better.
also, one of my cars has 19x9 all the way around...with staggered offsets. I guess it would make it easier to rotate tires :p

There's no point at all. Unless the person looking at the car noticed that the rear wheels are wider than the fronts.
Staggered offsets is another story though - wider track in the back too, not just wider wheels.
There is a performance advantage I guess in a RWD car though.

isnt staggered wheels for drag racing purposes? or more contact on the ground and all the power is to the rear?? i dont know, thats what i thought staggered was, i caould be wrong though. but it makes sense.

Yea you get more tire on the ground which helps performance. When I was on gtp forums, people would run one size wider tires up front since the car was a FWD

Particularly with stock fenders some cars can't tuck up as large a wheel up front as in the rear. Take my Skyline, I can just squeeze a 9 in the front with lots of camber and severe wheelarch rolling and it would use every millimetre available, whereas I can fit a 10 in the rear with ease with tapped up wheelarch lips and the same sort of roll and squeezing process would sneak an 11 in.
If you're going a widebody or flared setup, well yeah in that case you could easily go to whatever body reshape fits the rims, so same size all around is a possibility.
You do have to think about things like track width, scrub radius and such if you actually want it to drive properly and not handle like shit, smaller rims in the front could also have to do with not widening track and scrub radii too radically, whereas you don't have that issue in the arse end.
And of course you need clearance for steering comfortably, the rears don't have to turn on the vertical axis so you can again squeeze as much in as will fit statically.

Hello...
Thank you for everyone's replies...I appriciate the response.
I guess, I didnt really look at it that way with the question "why not have staggered wheels? - is it so that you can rotae the tires to save a little money"
Makes sense to me, so I guess saving money as much as i can would be an issue eventhough VIP and saving money doesnt go together in the dictionary :) haha..
I actually like the look of the car that has wide wheels in the front and the back (hence the thread question). So having (ie: 10" all around) wide wheels with different offsets would be my preference, however I am not sure if there was a purpose on having different sizes widths. But after everyone's response, I understand it more.
Thank you!!
Oh one more thing :)
Im going to try this question, and try to explain it as best as I can.
Looking at the perspective of buying new wheels...
If someone gets 10" all around but have different offsets, thats ok right? I mean instead of having 9" in the front that 1" difference, can be compensated by having a higher offset in the front Vs having a lower offset in the back?
Is that possible? But then that means that you cannot rotate it anymore again haha.

U can still rotate... but have to unmount the tires and mount it on the other wheels... Abit more work.
