Painting over chrome plated wheel centres?
Has anyone painted their chromed wheel centres? I'm hoping to paint mine satin silver, as IMO the chrome I have doesn't suit the car. Since they're 2 piece I could always get them powdercoated I guess; but for the sake of argument, what prep process will I need to do to the chrome surface to paint them myself?

my experiences with chrome, and the easiest method i can explain it, but a very long method. you gotta rough up the chrome really good and spray a primer over it. im talking like 40 grit sand paper. thats the only thing the primer will be able to stick to. after you prime it, wet sand it with 600 grit sand paper.... do all your preparations prior to paint and so one....
if you were to try and sand the chrome with say 400grit sand paper it might look like the paint will stick to it but it wont. itll flake right off soon after.

i've painted over chrome and just used a red scuff pad with some adhesion promoter...hasn't peeled yet...
also depends where the chrome is...since you're just painting the center, they're not subject to rock chips and road debris as say a bumper...i think you'll be okay...just be careful not to take a blow gun or power washer directly to it...
mista...you primer over 40 grit and the primer fills the scratches? or are you talking 40 to rough then make your way up to 320? i think shooting sealer will be okay too so that the paint isn't floating...

man...if you 40 grit it, you'll have to move your way up to 80,180,320, then paint...but that's the right way to make the primer stick. VIP-UCF, are you just putting Bull Dog on it to make it stick?

40 grit then prime. then wet sand, then paint. thats what id recommend to SeventhSkyline.
the rims on my truck, i 80gritted the chrome, then shot this super adhesion promoter (same adhesion promoter used on the bullet train in japan), sprayed sealer then color/clear. i got a shit load of rock chips, chipped off the clear, and paint. sealer is still there so i know what adhesion promoter did its job. dont even know the name cuz the bottle was blank.... hope you get your centers painted....
