Tinted Tails...?

Ok guys so I just picked up my Brown/Bronze '97 Y33 and am wondering something.  I tinted my tails on my old Champagne GS and it was bar none my favorite mod that I had done.  Now i'm not sure if I liked it because it made it look more aggressive or what it was.  

I'm just wondering you're take on doing it to my Espresso '97 Y33?

how do you tint them? a link to the product maybe?

you can do it with a spray called night shades. Cost about $10 but it leaves the lights looking very dull. Even after like 4 coats of clear, the lights still don't come out perfect. 
 
Or you can send them in to smoking-tails.net They charge $150 to do the whole lights or $175 to do a custom design like leaving the reverse lights part white. What they do is wet sand all the imprinted writting on the lights and all the imperfections then they apply the transparent paint as dark as you want it. They then use clear coat and wetsand and buff the top layer. The end result is very high quality.
 
 
Since its your car and you loved it in the past, then go for it.

Its not my cup of tea, but if you were to do it, I believe they make the tinted film for the tails similar to the 3M ClearBra film, but this is just smoked.

The reason im worried though (I was on my last car too) is because the GS was a lighter color while this is dark.

The way the q45 tails are made, their not ment to be tinted. It would really look out of place.

A main thing i think about when it comes to VIP is, make things flow smoothly. Black tails will stand out too much and ruins the classy look of a 4door sedan.

Keep them red/clear...pretty please.

If you have a 97-98 then don't do it, but if you have the 99-00 trunk setup, it could be a different story.  I'm not sure?

Haha I was looking for that pic.  I knew there was something wierd about doing it.  It just looks...well...dirty.

Ask widebodyQ what he did to his tails to get that tinted look.

Well I was aiming for a few shades darker then stock but they came back black. It was my fault since I didnt ask them to do it lighter. I used the link that I posted above smoking-tails.net. Im not a fan of how they look on the 97-98 Y33 because of the trunk lights. This is a pic of mine but I had them removed a week ago and will be up for sale at a crackhead deal of a price shortly

im not one for tinted but your job seem to come out quite well even if black. some cars just can't pull it due to body color or tail construction. on a side note you cars is ballllllinnnn- lookin right for the US scene let alone the east coast. GJ.

eh...I like the red/white combo better.

dude, I did nightshades on my altima but someone bashed them. It was pretty clean on my smoke altima. But if any of you need some headlight or tailight protection or paint protection check out rockblocker.com. They use 3m.. I'm not too sure if they have older models of the Q but you can probably request it from them.. The tint doesnt cost more than 60 bucks, and everything is cut out already so you dont need to worry about cutting and measuring n shit. :shrug:Oh, and the dull look with nightshades.. I think if you use a fine sand paper then clearcoat it would look clean..

I REAAAALLLLLLLLYYYYYYYY like the Lamin-X products for tinting I think they make one of the best quality products on the maket.

Elliott.....Please...this isn't club lexus. Please do not do this mod to your tail lights. Keep them the way they are. Focus on suspension and rims, and keep the car lean looking.

I don't like really dark tints on taillights...especially on luxury sedans. It definitely takes away from that classy look. Good to see you aren't going through with the idea.

On a side note, there's a guy whose username is BlueBatmobile on the G35driver forum. He makes vinyl overlays for various cars and I must say his products look very nice. Some of them have a sporty, aggressive look to them and others are more subtle and refined.

I considered doing this on my 161, but I'm glad I didn't. I ended-up getting the Sonar LED tails, and I love the look with no tint. Also, it keeps the LEDs looking nice & bright.

I don't care for the do it yourself kits because they look... well... do it yourself.
The matte finish and orange peel most of them have is not very attractive.

Most good body shops can spray a high-quality black candy that will give you the 
desired effect. A good clear coat and mild color sand & buff will compete the look.

There are mobile touch-up guys here in LA that will do the process with the lights
still installed on the vehicle- looks pretty sweet!

NEVER EVER EVER BUY NIGHTSHADE.....i used to smoke tails for some cash and those are the worst brand of spray you can ever buy. When you spray it, it has a texture like flat black.... THIS STUFF is GLOSSY. i bought a bunch when i was back home. They have RED/BLACK/SMOKE/ and even MIRROR lol. It comes out GREEAT and smooth. Cant even tell you painted over it when i did all red. Looked OEM

My favorite is all red for those who didnt like the amber, but hey....the light stuff was way back in 99 lol so its whatever...just a suggestion

Thanks.  I was looking for the red tint spray for a future project but hate niteshades

agi, theres a couple of hobby shops to get the red tint.  one in ridgewood and another in astoria.  like 5bucks for a 3oz spray can.

Not bad.  Im thinking of getting a daily driver and tinting the tails red because I hate amber.  Thanks for looking out.
