Sound System?

I seriously can not stand the stock system in my Y33. It's Bose and I have never really liked their car audio systems. They have the highs, barely any lows, and no mids. I was wondering how hard it is to change the system in our cars...can I still use the stock HU? Or would I need to buy a new one? Also what are the stock speaker sizes...Damn a sub setup is going to hard...good bye trunk.

Thanks,
Elliott

The 98s and down bose system sucks i have to agree.

Depending on the music you play, the system sucks. No low end at all.

I found out disconnecting the 2 rear subs and replacing them with JLs will fix the low end problem.

Havent tired it yet, but a friend of mine thats into competition audio said JLs are the best bang for the buck if your looking for low end. But i did disconnect the rear 2 subs and just ran the door speakers finding out they sound much better but lack bass, so thats where the JLs would come in.

you can use the bose with a pac adapter. i would just redo the whole thing though. jl is about the complete opposite of bang for your buck. they are nice but rediculously overpriced. you can get better for less.

Going from my full MB Quart and Eclipse system in my Lexus to the factory Bose in my Q is driving me CRAZY! I got the new trunk on order with a sw8200 ecplise sub and an Eclipse 34230 amp, same as i was running in the Lexus. With a sealed box, most people thought it was 2 12's with a lot of power, it hit REAL hard for a single 12. Might build the Q a ported enclosure for even more thump, but we will see how the trunk is going to come out.... there is a lot less room back there than there was in the Lexus. Eventually i will redo the doors in the Q with either rainbow or MB Quart Units like i had in the GS.

i was thinking that samething not to long ago but you can do it pretty easily if you set it up right (ie ib set up, small fg sealed enclosure, pancake tank in the wheel well, etc.).

Or mount the tank hanging from the rear deck... I am pretty sure thats where mine is going, then a raised false floor with the sub and amp sunk in with the compressors mounted on either side. When i do the new front and rear speakers, i will just hide that amp.

i'm about to get a fi q12 d1 on a sundown 1500d (800w a 2 ohms). the other subs i was considering:

re se 12
ssa icon 12
image dynamics idmax 12

these are all sq subs with rms ratings 600-1000w.

If you want a cheap fix, just replace the rear deck mid subs with upgraded units and blast away.

Hehe I Agreee Lexus Are The Best OEM Speaker System. I Had A Pioneer System Inside My LS400. But I Swapped A Few Things Out Like My Deck To Pioneer In Dash. I Wanted To Use It To Bump My Music Vidz :P. Than I Upgrade The Stock Sub To Two W6 Running On A PPI Amp. But My Internal Speakers Are Still Stock And Running Off The Stock Amp Eclipse Subs Are Really Good Especially The Old School Titanium Series. But I Couldnt Find Two Of Them So I Opted For The JL W6 For The Harder Tight Hitting Bass.

not a bad setup. ive heard very good things about those fi's, and sundown has been running some serious deals lately. theyve got their subs going for uber cheap now. their amps are quality.

my suggestion for the OP is go to as many audio shops as u can find and listen to as many speakers as u can. pick out the ones u enjoy the best and install them or have them installed. do the same for the subs.

Yes i have a y33 and no I have not done it, but I have done it in my S4 with alpine 6.5" midbass free air woofers a friend had at his shop Have no idea of the model number but they sounded great.

If you are replacing your factory 6.5"s with 8's you will need to amplify them a little more to get thier full potential. I am just installing a 12 in the trunk with my air to make up for the lack of bass.

installing 8's in the doors is a great idea. if executed well, u wont ever want to go back to 6's. the problem is finding an 8 that can reach up high enough to match well with your tweeter, unless of course youre going the 3 way route. having 8's up front will allow u to drop the crossover point muuuuch lower than your typical 6's which will give u the illusion of having your sub mounted up front.

I suggest this to all that have the shitty bose system in their cars. I think it's like 98- Y33's

8"s in the door would be tight in a three way config but not two-way.... one thing about putting a big woofer in the door would be mounting depth and you well have to sound deaden the door or else you will get a good amout of ratttling

you cannot use standard 6.5" 2-3 ways speakers from best buy to replace the rear deck speakers.

the rear deck oem 6.5" speakers only play low frequency so u need 6.5" speaker subs that was intended for low frequency and Infinite baffle set up.

and also, the oem 6.5" rear deck speakers are powered by it's own tiny individual amp, open your trunk and remove the carpet panel covering your gas tank, you'll see the speaker-built in amp.

i wouldn't run an 8 in the door UNLESS it is a 3 way system. 8" for a dedicated midbass and a 3"-4" midrange.

it can sound good. if u have a large format tweeter, they tend to extend pretty low. its not going to be as good as having a small midrange to mate the 2 together, but it can be done. peerless HDS tweeter comes to mind. if u lowered the size to 6.5 or even 7, youre chances of a 2 way setup with a large format tweeter are much better.

No cheap easy fixes here, I need my sound clear and proper, after air, wheels and kit, my whole interior will be redone, sound deadening for days, and some very nice 6.5" components front and rear. Deck and Sub are getting finished with the air install.

Get a good component set for your front stage with a good amount of power. Run cheapies in the back of the Hu or small amp.....you shouldn't really be hearing your rear speakers in a well designed car stereo.

most people that are serious about sound don't run rear fill. your frontstage is supposed to be in front of you. it also allows bass into the cabin via the open holes in the rear deck. the only reason i can see running rear fill is 1) you are running a 5.1 sound processor or 2) you have people in your back seat frequently.
