Chop Top

Has anyone done a chop top to a VIP car? For those hot rodders out there what would a chop  usually run?

DOn't think anyone in the states in the VIP scene is at that leval of modification yet.  I thought about it long and hard for one of my long term mods but don't think I would do it to my ride.  Id love to do it to a G50 though.  :biggthumpup:

Any idea how much it would cost?

A lot.  It's an art in itself.  Your best bet would be to have the work done in Canada since you can still get a good ol' fashioned lead chop up there.  Led chops always come out the best since the metal is easiest to coax.

glass is one aspect that poeple tend to overlook when chopping a car.  just remember that your windshield and backglass will have to either be custom made, or custom cut.  well you can cut and grind your windshield but your rear glass and all 4 doors need to be tempered.  if you go to a guy that is good they can reconfigure your door frames just like stock so you can reuse you door glass.  the reason it is done to hot rods  quite easily is that all the glass is flat.  look at the custom 2dr charger that west coast customs did, there isnt even glass in the sides, trust me i asked big dane when he was in temecula.

There's a lot to chopping a car besides the glass.  On curved glass is not always an issue depending on how much of a chop.  Sometimes cars don't need do be cut so much.  On the 1960's bubbletops, we usually sink the window into the cowl 2" chop max.  On newer cars, there's a lot more to think about besides the outside and the glass.  The interior panels need to be done as well.  Most of it is plastic which means you'll have to probably glass new panels.  All cars that we chop start at 6k and moves its way up.  When I started on my 39 chevy, the previous owner hacked it up bad with the chop.  We had to redo the whole thing.  Here it is now

There's a lot of thought and planning that goes into chopping a car.  I would take it to a pro and expect to pay the bucks...

^ no to mention the need to pie cut and section the the pillars and roof to make it work.  you take 2 inches out of the pillars and that translates to some amount of width in the roof.  a very expensive proposition not to mention the fact that there are only a handful of shops in the states that I'd trust a simple "rod" type chop to much less a newer luxury vehicle.   I'd bet you're looking at $5000 to $7500 easily by the time its all said and done.
