Air ride management, what to get?

I`m getting an Air ride kit for my car this winter but I`m stuck between 2 systems and I`m having a hard time deciding what to get.

I`ll either get the kit from universal air with dakota digital controller.

http://www.dakotadigital.com/index.cfm/page/ptype=product/product_id=501/category_id=71/home_id=59/mode=prod/prd501.htm

Components:
2 VIAIR 480C, 200 PSI, 100% DUTY CYCLE
1 200 PSI PRESSURE SWITCH
1 CHROME SWITCH BOX
8 "Blow Proof" 1/2" AIR SOLENOID VALVE
8 VALVE MOUNTS
1 D.O.T. APPROVED FITTING & HOSES FOR F.B.S.S
1 POLISHED STAINLESS 5 GAL TANK (NO RUST!)
1 HEAVY DUTY SOLENOID
1 INSTALLATION KIT
1 BOLT PACK
+ the Dakota Digital Controller

or the Ride Pro e2 kit from ridetech.
http://www.ridetech.com/productinfo/rideproe.asp

Complete 4 way RidePro e2 compressor system with new RidePro e controller - includes
2 Thomas compressors,
compressor relay,
5 gallon tank,
4 way RidePro solenoids,
RidePro e controller,
wiring harness,
airlines and fittings

The Universal Air kit will set me back $500 dollars more than the ridetech kit.
But I`m by some reason leaning more towards the Universal Air kit.

Any Comments?

i dunno..both kits are good but if possible, it would be better to order piece by piece i believe.. let us know how fast u want it, where you wanted to mount the tank(in the spare tire comp hidden, in the trunk for show etc..), how much you are going to play with ur suspension, how much you are willing to spend etc...
the pluses about the universalair kit is the guages and the compressors. i believe it comes w/ 3/8 lines so w/ that kit it is gonna be faster than most vipstyle guys prefer. with the ridetech kit, the drawback i believe are the compressors, not as good as viairs, and the guages, but it is cheaper and a little slower..but u may also need to buy electrical wire, extra fittings etc based on how you mount everything..

The problem for me with buying piece by piece is that I don`t know what I need.
if it was possible I would love to be able to put the tank in the spare tire comp.
speed is not THAT important, but 2-4 sec rise time would be nice.
It would be nice if it would cost $1500-$2000 for the complete airmanagement(everything exept the airbags and struts).
The thing I liked about the Proride kit was the simplicity of how it`s connectet, few components and mainly plug and play. Not too much wiring.

Even if you are not interested in the Auto Pilot system, I will still help you piece together a system that will work best for you and your budget. Just let me know.

i like the uas kit with the dd controller (thats what i'm getting) but that air lift kit seems to be popular around here. you could make it in the $2000 range WITH the controller on a uas kit (if you don't get the flagship fbss). i haven't heard of people using the ART kit in vip apllications, but they are huge in the truck and b-body scene as well as hot rods. as for the line size, its not a big issue. you can slow it down.

Thanks for the info.
The more I read up on the different controllers and suppliers, the more confused I get.
Everyone seems to have a good system and I`m having a hard time deciding on what to get.
I like the look of the DD controller, but I also like the user friendlyness of the Auto pilot and the Ride pro.
I want the install to be as clean as possible with as much plug and play components as possible. The Auto pilot and Ride pro systems have all this. But I`m still confused.:pat:

1 VIAIR 480 compressor will fill in about the time it takes for those 2 thomas pumps to fill up.

With our system with the 2 480's it will take 5 mins from 0-200 psi and 1:15 from 165-200 recovery.

Also speaking from personal experience the Dakota unit you will have better luck with. There is more fine tuneability for error correction and error duration (how far it has to be out before the system will adjust it). Along with a more robust pressure sender (we have installed the ride pro e2 before and the customer keeps replacing his senders while the dakota customers havn't had any issues). Also the dakota unit you can adjust the front/back and all together in manual mode opposed to just the corners.

I will admit they have us on the installation side. Thier system is easy to install. If thats such a big issue we can pre-assemble the entire air mangement system for $300. That way it will be a straight plug-in installation like thiers.

I`m still really stuck on what to choose for my system.

I`ve come across a company that makes airstruts for my car.
Will complete struts be a better option than buying f.ex the universal bags from UAS?
The can sell me a complete system with everything i need except the digital controller for a really good price.

http://www.streetridepro.com/

Does anyone have any experience with this company and their products?

I make it a habit to not talk down on anyone elses product, I feel that ours speaks for itself. However i would suggest doing some internet searches on Chassis Tech, AIM Industries, Airbagit, Ricky Racer etc. They are all the same company as Streetridepro.com just different names.

So what is bad about their products? I`m just curious since I don`t want to end up with some crap. And like most people I just want to get the best kit possible for the least ammount of money ;) hehehe.

EDIT: did my homework and read up on peoples experience with AIM. I won`t be buying anything from them. :)

I think all just save up the xtra 500bucks and go for the UAS kit, I don`t want to end up with the good old "Buy cheap, buy twice".

The only thing I`m not digging about the UAS kit it that it doesn`t use a manifold, It would make my unstall much cleaner.

If you really want manifolds we carry them, However i would strongly recommend going with the independent valves because they can handle alot more abuse. The problem with the manifolds is that the internal part of the valve (its whats called a direct acting valve) has very small, tight areas inside and if you get any debrit inside the air system it will get stuck inside the valve and cause it to stick. Where as the diaphram valves a majority of the air flows through the diaphram and thats a big area and the tight tolarance area is only used to open the large part of the valve.

You can put 4 valves together in 1 stick and then run 2 of the sticks for the side/side control. Here is a picture with everything put together inside a trunk.

The wiring makes it look a little clustered, but that is also with the digital gauge sending units, and compressor wiring.

yeah that does look cluttered, i wouldn't even consider that a great example of a set-up (no disrespect). it is obviously crammed into a small area, and much cleaner results can be achieved if you have some space to work with.

i've never heard of the issues with manifold valves, as they are a newer design (they were just coming out when i stopped doing air ride suspensions as far as i know). i like them as well and i wouldn't think debrit would be a huge deal but uas would know better than me.

None taken. The customer did his own install in his garage. It can be cleaned up a bunch by routing things a different way, but its the only pic i have showing everything.

Usually its not, at least for a while, but a year or two down the road don't be surprised if you have to take the valves apart and clean them out. Its just with our kits we give a 3yr/36k mile warranty (except compressor 1 yr on those) and I don't want customers sending thier valves back because they are sticking 2 years in. So, we overkill it where there won't be that issue.

no prob.

honestly, every car that I have built here in Norcal with UAS and Dakota Digital have been well received without any issues what-so-ever. This kit is truly solid and over-engineered in many ways. Not to mention the customer support from UAS far exceeds everyones expectations.
What makes UAS stand out from the competition is they are open to feedbacks. They constantly improve and upgrade their system. They maximize for optimal drop and are always willing to start from scratch on an application never attempted.

The custom bracket image you see above for the Tein CS was fully engineered by UAS for a customer here in Norcal. I doubt there are any companies willing to do R&D for their customers without asking for anything in return.

keep up the good work Zack, UAS and I'll see you at SEMA next year. =)

yeah...for the least amount of money with very good quality...i would go with UAS. Dont even think about going with chassis tech. There struts sucks! But going dakota and all those electrical leveling systems is not going to be cheap. Id rather just go manual.

Dakota Digital has been around in the automotive scene for quite some time now. I know b/c they are one of my advertisers and vendors at my work. All the hot rod, kustoms all use Dakota. Infact Airrides controller was at one point in time designed by Dakota. Airride today is made in China. We just did a buildup article for Airride. I was able to see the product, play with it and notice where they were cutting corners to produce their controllers. But I will commend Airride for their plug and play harness for all electronic lines. For average Joes, that will save you so much time.

Zack.. plug and play?? =D

Thanks alot for all the feedback guys.
I haveto say I like the possivbility to replace single components if I run separate valves and not a manifold. But the install looks so much cleaner with the manifold. Form before function is a bitch.

I haveto agree that the install pictured here looks a bit messy, but I want to put my air management in the sparewheel compartment myself, just because of the stealthness of it and to save space in the trunk.

Does the Aero sport bags come in different lengths? I read somwhere on this forum that you could get the bags in 3 different sizes, is this correct? I want as much travel as possible.

We can make a few different versions of the Aero sport, however we have found that there isn't much advantages verses the standard aero sport. We can make it with any of our bags as the outside bellow. In the past we use to do both a double bellow and a triple bellow version. The down side though is that if you put too much weight on them the didn't have the same life as the single and for the gain in travel (1/2" on the double and 1" on the triple, but compressed at 5" on the triple) didn't out weigh the life of the bag in the heavy applications.

But, if you still want them, we can still build them.

Also we do some shorter travel versions for the Lambo's which is basically the aero sport inner with the Air House bag on the outside.

It would take ALOT of modification inorder to put them in. There just isn't enough room in the suspension for the bags to fit. We are working on a smaller (4") bag but its going to be awhile before those are out.

I`ve decided to go with the kit from UAS with the Dakota Digital Controller.
I haveto give Zack from UAS alot of credit for answering all my dumbass questions about everything.

now the only thing I can`t decide on is if I should get the remote kit or the switch box in addition to the digital controller.

Thanks! I am here to help!

If your running the autoleveling kit you can't run an external switch box. Because the autoleveling kit is always check the height/pressure and if its changed from outside of the controller it will correct it. Now the Autoleveling kit does have a manual control option (4 buttons on the right) that will allow you to go from all, front, back, corners up and down.

Would it be possible to run an external swith box if I wired a "on/off" switch to the autoleveling kit? so that I could turn off the autoleveling if I wantet do use the switch box?
Just to be able to play around with the suspension at shows and so on.

You would have to either kill the power to the autoleveling kit or put it in manual mode (push the right button)

you will be satisfied with uas, and dakota digital, my bro has it on his ls430, and only runs the dakota system based on air pressure only, both systems are very reliable, and work great, i have done lots of research and it seems the main difference between the e2 pro air management and dakota digital is the e2 pro has a greater range of error, meaning the air pressure in the bag/sleeve has to get about 5-7 psi lower before adjusting (adding air), where the dakota constantly adjusts the bags to keep the psi that programmed into the system....

AirRunner Pros and Cons

Components:
2 VIAIR 480C, 200 PSI, 100% DUTY CYCLE
1 200 PSI PRESSURE SWITCH
1 CHROME SWITCH BOX
8 "Blow Proof" 1/2" AIR SOLENOID VALVE
8 VALVE MOUNTS
1 D.O.T. APPROVED FITTING & HOSES FOR F.B.S.S
1 POLISHED STAINLESS 5 GAL TANK (NO RUST!)
1 HEAVY DUTY SOLENOID
1 INSTALLATION KIT
1 BOLT PACK
+ the Dakota Digital Controller

1) What would be the Price Range for
a Complete UAS Kit and Dakota Digital Controller
Installed Versus a Complete Air Runner System ???

2) What are the Pros and Cons of AirRunner vs. UAS ???

I went to a AirRunner Dealer and they told me
that AirRunner has a Much Longer Lifespan than UAS,

"So a AirRunner Buyer is Spending More on the Quality
in the beginning and Don'T have to worry about Replacing
Expensive Parts in 5 Years on a UAS system that would Add Up More
In the Lifespan of a AirRunner System."

3) How True is this Statement when Long Term Cost is the Topic ???

Of course I am going to say un-bias and only mention a few key points about our product. Hopefully this isn't going to offend anyone. I am not trying to put anyones product down.

A few things to keep in mind is that your dampers are always going to wear out. It doesn't matter if you have stock springs, lowering coils, coilovers etc. Eventually they are going to wear because they are a normal consumable item like brake pads and tires. With our system when your shocks wear out, your able to replace just the dampers with any off the shelf damper, because the bag is not sealed against the damper. Also you have several different choices of which damper you which to go for.

As far as the expected life out of the bags, personally on my 300c I have over 105k miles on the system and still driving 100+ miles per day. The only "repairs" I have had to make, was I had to replace the compressors once when I wore them out, but, by using the dual compressors, when one of them stopped running, I continued to use the car until I had a chance to change them out.

***Edit***
A few things to keep in mind when you thinking about "why is it so much less" with our bags we use them in several different applications, so production costs are down vs. doing a very specific application also we manufacture our bags here in house, inside the U.S.A. There isn't additional charges factored into the customers cost like shipping and importing into the states.

A side note, I am in no way trying to put down Air Runner. Personally, I think that they make a very nice looking product and I don't doubt that they have alot invested in making each application.

For pricing please talk to the supporting vendor on the forum that carry our product. I am just here for help :-)

ive known a couple of peeps that run UAS bags that got there stranded when there system developed leaks. two of them here on the forum. The problem is not the bag the problem is the installation. If your going to get UAS it is important to get it done by UAS.
im not trying to sound bias, but i think AirRunners is the best system out there when your thinking of reliability and problem free air ride. ive Never heard of any problems rising from the air struts.

Install is EVERYTHING!!!

Yes this is True.

I have herd some Real Bad Horror Stories
when Unauthorised Shops Install Air Suspension.
I Highly recommend That If Your Going to Spend The Money
To Get the Air Suspension Make Sure that you Save the Money
to get It Installed Correctly.

I also told that Any Air System can Last Long
when the Install is performed by trained, experienced
Air Suspension Installers!

Does Anyone have a Link or a List of UAS Authorised Installers.

UAS has great customer service. I had a pair of bags rebuilt and Zack was very helpful. There was little downtime because he got the bags back to me within two days.

Only problem I have is the bag rubbing problem. If you drive slammed and lower your car all the way down frequently the spindle rubs the bag on some Lexus cars. I'm not the only one who has had this problem.

I live in Anaheim, CA.
Where is My Nearest Authorised UAS Dealer / Installer ???

Do you do Installs at San Bernardino Office ???

Yes we do installations here at our facility. When you have PG Motoring schedule the install for you, they bring it out to our shop.

im not trying to sound bias, but i think AirRunners is the best system out there when your thinking of reliability and problem free air ride. ive Never heard of any problems rising from the air struts.

By chance are they running our full kit, or just our bags? We have put allot of effort into setting the entire air system up to be as problem free as possible.

you shouldn't be left stranded if you have a leak... Typically a very fast leak would take at least several mins before it came down. Now, if they had airline routing issues, thats a different story, but at that point it doesn't matter who's air system they run, if you don't secure your lines and route them away from the exaust, tires etc you will have issues with the lines.

when you first install any air kit, you must test the system, feel for leaks, on my bro's ls430 with uas bags... we put the kit in outselves, then noticed leaks all over (not from the push to connect fitting), but from the brass fittings where they screwed into each other, in our excitement, we did not realize we were not wrapping the teflon tape in the right direction (yes there is a right and wrong way) and what we thought was tight enough was not....we ended up starting at the front left hand bag and checked each fitting for leaks with solution of water and dishwashing soap...if it had bubbles, undo, rewrap with teflon tape and retighten, no bubbles, move on to the next fitting, i was really impressed with the all brass push to connect fittings, (Not one had a leak nor do they now) and then we used rubber coated clasps to hold hoses or plastic clamps to keep them out of way of trouble...also used rubber grommets where they would go through the spare tire well.
