Wheel Unbalanced?

So it's Sunday and shops are closed.:signdammit: After meeting up w/ the boys of SD (BTW thx for waiting for me and it was good to meet Yoplay And Kevin  ) I was coming up on the 5 and noticed some vibration round 75-80mph. It wasn't a constant vibration so I thought it was the road.....Question? If your wheel is unbalanced will you have a constant vibration or will it vibrate in a ryth-m? Ex: ------vvvv------vvvv------vvvv. I'm planning on doin' some cruzin today so i'll try another highway. It also crossed my mind that A. perhaaps my rim is a little tweaked or B. could my suspension be that sensitive to the road?

You will start to feel some vibrations at higher speeds if a wheel isn't balanced correctly or if the wheel weights fell off. My suggestion would be to re-balance the front 2 tires. Where you located in CA?

If the wheel is unbalanced it will shake continously at a given speed because all vibration is frequency transmitted through a solid. Sometimes irregualr road seurface will give an erratic vibration, but its not overly common. Suspension shouldnt cause vibration under any circumstance related to what you are describing. As far as what if any wheels to rebalance its very simple. You get a shake in the steering wheel chances are (and are pretty good) its in the front whereas if it seems to be in the lower back it will be the rear.

Get it balanced asap, Unbalanced stretched tires usually leads to a blowout

do you feel the vibrations in the steering wheel? or in the seat of your pants? you can isolate whether its the front or rear tires causing the vibration... can you see it in the steering wheel? if you can see the steering wheel moving back and forth (very small like 1/2") you might have a bubble or separated tire, but you say you only feel it at high speeds. easy solution, just get either both front, both rear, or all four rebalanced... GL....

I read that if the vibe is in the steerings it's more likly in the front, whereas if the vibs r in the seat then it's the back. they are in the seat so i'm trying the back first but may as well get all of them done. Th anks for all the info, feel free to add on knowledge and info if everythings not covered...

What everyone has said is correct but I would also have one other thing checked out.....bearings. When they start to go bad they can cause noises too and when they get really bad they can cause vibrations. Is the noise rotational and does it vary with speed? One way to do a quick check on bearing noise is to get up to the speed where you start to hear the noise and shift the weight of the car side to side and see id you hear the noise coming and going. Just another suggestion.

Good point. However there is no noise, just vibs in outlined pattern.

Are your wheels hubcentric and/or do you have hubcentric adapters for them? This will cause vibration as well.

start replacing everything in the front end of your car! lol, that's what a lot of CL guy's do... everything from braces to sways to lca's and UCA's, steering rack bushings, then they go to the rear and start replacing stuff back there.

it' can be pricey, but it will actually make your car handle a LOT better.

it's probably just an unbalanced wheel.

THX, but alot is already switched up (LCA, turning ecu, sway bars, poly bushings, etc.) and my GS handles pretty well.

with aftermarket wheels unless they are hubcentric you need a hubcentric adapter (spacer was probably a misleading word thouigh thats what it does) to make sure the wheel is centered on the hub face. A dfifference of .004" is enough to cause a vibration and since wheels arent perfect and wont tend to stay lugcentric its cheap insurance to keep it where it needs to be.

Yeh after 85mph there is no vibration, just a big silver car blastin' down the highway! That or passengers sitting in the seats.

LS are just as bad if not worse. People on CL recommend using a hunter roadforce balancer when balancing your wheels. I had discount tire use a cheap machine once, and right when I got on the freeway it felt like my car was gonna fall apart from the vibration, or that my tires were flat. After having them balanced on a road force it was perfect, better then the car has ever been.

Thx everyone!!!

Yea! I got a hook up for balancing! So I got it balance an had a hubcentric ring (thx for the recommendation) installed for the grand total of nada. My ride feels sooo smooth and the vibration is practically unnoticable. FYI I know it was a mistake and i will NEVER do it again, but I had previously purchased my tires at EVANS TIRES = BIG MISTAKE!!! Not only did they scratch my rear lip, they neglected to balance my wheels and evenso neglected to tell me. BUYERS BEWARE!!! or you may fall victim to the same. After contacting them in this regard (retail and corporate levels) they denied my claims and blew me off..
