Q45 Engine Noise
Geting this kinda whining sound when running my car. I noticed more as the weather got colder. I dies down a lil in drive but when in park or neutral it is pretty bad. I checked fluid levels and everything seem kosher. Gonna try to schedule a tranny flush this week to see if that helps. but the whining noise increases with throttle, so if I rev it in neutral assuming this dis-engages the the tranny it still whines. Any thoughts?
Not sure about the history as I have had the car only 9 months about and have had regular oil changes but no info on the tranny. motor has 187xxx miles.

Not sure but it might be your belts?
Have they been changed?

Is the whining noise high or lower pitch?
Cause my q has a really quiet low pitch whine when its idles, and gets just a lil louder as the rev rises. But it sounds like the normal v8 whine to me so i ignore it.
And i also only notice the whine when its around 30-40* out.

Yeah I did, that's a notrious noise for low fluid form 240's so that was like the 1st thing I checked. I also checked my coolant and water and everything is fine there. but it does sound like a low ps fluid noise but it isn't. and I checked to see if the pump was operating the fluid was moving but not big swirl like it does on 240's freaking hurricane inside the resevoir. I'll try the belts this weekend as that's cheaper than a tranny flush.

I have the same probably too Damicci, my fluid levels are to the top, I think i'm going with the belts. Is this expensive? Anyone know?

Mine was making a whine a few years back, turned out to be the alternator which finally stopped working. Once I fixed it, it never came back (the noise) and that's a good 3 years now.

UUMM don't really know what that could be other than the belts as well..This colder weather just don't do these cars justice that are use to running in warm temps...My Q has been acting weird lately in the mornings when I am warming it up...it idles good then idles real low then reg again then low...when it starts to idle lower I see black smoke coming out of the tailpipes...when I have gotten it good and ready I drove to the first light and car felt like it wanted to die..and one time it did..I have been trying to figure this out...I been back tracking to some things I have done to the engine and I took F.L.S advice to clean my mass air flow sensor...I was not sure exactly where and when I took it apart from the intake I unbolted four screws where the connection is..tried pulling it out and broke the 3 prongs..I thought nothing of it at the time and just screwed it back in thinking that since they were still touching the metal it would be ok..So after this black smoke/ weired idling issue I took it apart yesterday and suatered them back on real carefully...I immediately noticed I had fast throttle response and this morning no black smoke and no weired idle..but you know murphy's law...so I am crossing my fingers that I fixed the problem otherwise off to the dealership for a diagnose...Good luck to you on your car..I just thought I would share my experience with my problems as well...

I'm having a similar problem with my Q also. Will have to inspect it further.
I hope it's the belts and nothing more (nothing worse)

I dont know whats up with the bad idle ZION has.
I ran into that problem twice already on a cold day.
Warms up, drives fine and when im at the light it dies. Start it back up and stops doing it untill another cold start up. But it happend about a month apart.
And im not so good with working on these engines...still getting used to it and where verything is on this damn thing.

I figured out what was wrong with my car...well at least I hope..The problem was a bad Mass Air Flow Sensor...
I was having that same problem as you on cold starts...then at the light it died once..
Try to clean yours if it does not work buy a new one..should fix the problem I noticed right away the difference...idled great no more shaking...
I read a little bit on it online and found out symtems of a bad MAS..
1) Runs Rich (most likely whe I had black smoke)
2) Engine shakes
3) Misfires or backfires
4) Idle goes high and low
5) Loss of power
I tried cleaning mine but I ended up breaking it and bought a new one...cross my fingers that there will be no more black smoke ( was running rich) ........
I think for all you Q owners...these cars are getting up there in age. and mialage.and things are going to go out..should any of you have these problems listed above make sure to check your MAS...it seems like when you hit over 120k miles this is something looking into for replacement.

That's what I was going to say, While changing my belts I found out that the tension pulleys/ belt tensioner had a slight amount of play, I didn't replace them but I didn't have time to. Has anyone changed their tension pulleys/belt tensioner, while changing their belts?

Well, itis related to the belts, I changed all the belts and it went away but as soon as i revved it up, it started whining again. One thing I noticed when loosening the tensioner pulley's was one of them was already fairly loose. But everything is pretty tightened up and still getting the noise.
For ref here are the belt part numbers
Gates PN:
Water/PS K040506 - 4PK1285
Alternator: K060380 - 6PK969
AC: K040384 - 4PK976
No play on any of the Accessory pulley's.
Atleast I have new belts now.

Well luckily it is pretty easy to do. Maybe about an hour or so. Extremely easy on a lift.

Found out the problem in my Q is most likely due to a bad pulley or bearing (Thanks Joey).
You might want to check that out too. GOOD LUCK!

Dont mean to thread jack, but since its the same topic..
Im also getting a little whining noise coming from my rear passenger compartment.
When ever im on heavy throttle, the whining noise gets louder but not annoying loud, you gotta know its there to notice it. Sounds a lil like vtech kicking in.
Anyone else hear this?
