DEF JAM GIVES JAY Z HIS WALKING PAPERS?!?!

Kanye is a good entertainer/producer, but I dont think he could actually run shit.  Jermaine Dupri has been in the game a long time. He is a badass producer, song writer, even rapper. He brought up Kriss Kross, Bow Wow, Jagged Edge, Da Brat, and those are the only ones I could think of. Plus he is hittin Janet Jackson. I think once Jay Z steps down, Jermaine will come from the shadows and shine.

Driftgirl ur info is rather skewed. Def Jam offered Jay-Z somewhere in the range of 10 mil, and he took his time in replying. When he took on the job intially he was only getting 1 mil a year. Jay-Z did his corporate thing and got all he could out of Def Jam i.e.  complete ownership of all of his masters excluding Reasonable Doubt which he still owns along with Dame Dash and Kareem Biggs. Now that Beyonce only has one album left in her contract, they're believed to start up their own label. As far as Kanye West that wouldn't happen have anyone of you checked the soundscan on his artist (Common, Rhymefest or John Legend) not really putting up numbers to warrant the job, plus he's Jay-Z artist, lol. I think Jermaine Dupri would fit well, especially since the head of Def Jam is from the south, and the south is what sadly sells.

yeah the rumor came out about he and Beyonce forming a joint venture under SONY. We'll see if that happens tho.  I think it will because he has no place else to go and get that kinda money. 
 
The fact is that his record tanked after the first week and nobody at Def Jam likes him because he hasnt done anything for the other artist on the label...which is a shame. He's good at being 'JAYZ' and promoting himself but is  seen as a failed attempt at running a major by insiders. 
 
DefJam layed off a crap load of people this past week and will continue to do so. JayZ doesnt deserve the rumored 10 mill deal to re-sign....which he didnt.....cause it wasnt on the table. 
 
they did a buyout on Kanyes record to boost soundscan. Theres no way you can drop #'s that fast the following week. 
 
When he first signed on to run DefJam I thought he'd bring the label back to the top. They shouldve had Dame Dash runnin shit ;) but he was made to look like the 'bad guy' thu all of this. 
 
Kanye WANTS the DefJam job....but I wouldnt trust him after the Dame and JAYZ split. He's a buster!

As for his album American Gangsta and the low record sales, it just shows what's wrong with rap. IMHO that's one of his best albums yet. But like i tell my friends it's not easy being a Jay-Z fan. You actually have to be smart to understand what he's referring to. Like his metaphors are crazy, but that aside... The other artist shouldn't be mad at him for them not getting backing, that's not his job. They need to look at the A&R at Def Jam not the president. That's like when LL had something to say, are you serious LL when's the last time you put up numbers???

I hope the Dame reference was a joke. Everyone hated Dame, but his power came from Jay-Z. You want to do business with Jay-Z you had to deal ith Dame. With them splitting why is it that Dame is no longer concerned with rap?? :shrug:

Dame is a business man. I can respect that and always will. Jayz is a recording artist...who was hot garbage on a cold sunday before he and Dame (mostly dame) hit that lick withthe 'lil orphan annie' track.  
 
as far as LL and J beefin'...my money is on LL. He's been in the game [B]and a factor[/B] for like 20 years or sum shi like that. LL can speak on J...but I SERIOUSLY doubt J will speak back. He doesnt want it with LL in [B]ANY[/B] type of battle. He backed down to Pac and he'll back down to Cool J as well. He's smart at picking his battles....I'll give him that. 
 
but make no mistake: He would be where he's at without Dame Dash. 
 
Just because YOU think its his best body of work doesnt mean the world has to agree. People have spoken and it flopped....even with all of the press it had. It had the number one movie and couldnt stay on top another weak...I mean "week" :smiley:

just because an album doesn't sell great doesn't mean it's wack.  there's tons of dope artist out there that don't do big numbers and it's all because they don't have access to big time marketing and promotion.  it's like any industry you can have the best product known to man but with no one to push it and get it out there it doesn't really benefit anyone.

so true....but not the case in regards to Jay Z's American Gangster. With all of the promotion $$ [B]AND [/B]a #1 movie...no reason to flop if its any good. Besides 50 and Kanye, there was no other release as hyped up and overly promoted than his this year. 
 
Alicia keys is movin an ass load of units...with not even half the promotion and no movie support. I think she's close to 1.5million or sumthin in a couple weeks:biggthumpup:

Her target audience is still conditioned to go out and buy cd's.  Jay-z's audience is geard to download so cd sales doesnt always tell the story.  This day and age, its about the ringtones.  Artists get like .77 a ringtone

Jay-Z is kinda wack, I've never really liked his style of 'rapping.' widebody has it right though, a lot of people are downloading his album (everyone i know has) rather than going out and buying it. I think had he not had  "American Gangster" backing him up, he'd not even sold as much as he did. 

Kanye sucks.  Jermaine Dupri has been around a long time, so i guess he'd be a good person to head up the business. 

Or maybe people should get back to pushing their cds outta the trunk for 5 bucks a pop and make GOOD music again. Put some talent in it, instead of biting all the other shitbox music out there today, or 'remixing' it to get your own cut of somebody else's hard work.

My dislike of him started because of the whole Dame situation. then he made a comment and compared himself to michael Jordan stating he felt like Jordan did when Magic and Bird retired because his greatest rivalry in the game (Big and Pac) wasnt around to see who was the best....BULLSHIT. Pac smashed him on tracks DAILY and he did nothing.

As far as Pac ripping him. Who didn't Pac diss and how many people responded? Remember that whole incident started with Big and Pac. Big didn't respond for awhile and told Jay, Nas and others don't feed into, it's all bs. Don't act like Pac didn't come to Big and say man it's all a front this is going to make us both a lot of money. So Biggie kept quiet and so did the rest of the east coast minus Mobb Deep and CNN.

As far as the Dame thing, Dame went greasy first. How you going to fire people that was with you from day one when he was out on vacation. And then appoint some clown as Cam'ron Vp. Yea Dame aided in his career but it's not like Jay didn't put up his 100gs also to get Rocafella started. The rise to power came from Jay's music, point blank period. The man was going to let Dame and Biggs have everything, all he asked was for the masters to Reasonable Doubt and they said no. And then LA Reid made hima offer to be the president and own all his masters, who wouldn't take that? Dame played himself.

Be serious who's LL? He did alot but that was back then. Dudes whole careers been documented since he was a teen. He has no street cred. Honestly he's a easy target especially how his career hit a steep decline, he should be thankful he got into acting. He wisely followed the steps of Marky Mark and the Fresh Prince.

As far as Def Jam, honestly who cares? :shrug: Def Jam's been on life support for years. Take Jay-Z off of Def Jam a few years ago and what else did they have to offer besides Ja Rule? Some will say they have (insert name) but if they aren't selling it doesn't matter at the end of the day. 
As far as the east coast there's too many problems there. The world no longer cares to hear their story. Or better yet they're tired of it being packaged the same way. New York met it's demise with the lack of production on beats. The south came with catchy beats that you could rock to and formed a whole movement behide it. True hip hop fans know that 80% of the south rappers are utter trash. But in the club that's what the girls dance to, and in the car it bumps :shrug: Biggest rap person now is arguably Lil Wayne. Dudes handlers are brilliant. They took catchy beats mixed them with ghostwriters from NY, Jerz and Philly and some country slang and a whole bunch of drugs and presto Lil Wayne.

Looking at the east coast no one has that appeal to touch everyone anymore. 50 had it on his first album, but sold it ripped Ja Rule to sheds only to take his style. So the hood no longer messes with 50. But 50 realized the hood will make you rich but white people will keep you there.
