Tomorrow when the car is put together, and the locksmice coilovers installed ill take more pictures,im also doing all the wood interior pieces same color, since we both HATE the cheap ghetto look of wood (no offense to those that like it)

Finally! Looks good now, but I'm sure it will look 20x better once it's cut and buffed up

what size flake did you use? I wanted something similar but in the paint rather than the clear, but fine was what i was looking at for the flake size.

As far as I know, if you put flake in paint, you'll just end up with grainy paint because the flakes get covered in paint.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean to acheive by putting flake in paint.

Flake ranges in sizes from  .002, .004, .008, and .015 I think. .015 being the coarse looking mega-sparkle

turned out pretty much how i expected. on the upside it looks well done. on the downside i just don't like flake at all, but thats just a matter of personal preferance. i can definitely respect it, especially with all the trouble it was for you to get them painted. just glad to know that people won't be saying "get a paint job" when your trying to tell them something right from now on.

mix the flake in the mid clear, flake it, then clear over it. You can see the process on my site...we flaked an Oldsmobile roof then candied over it. My bodyshop website [URL="http://www.bodylinesinc.com"]www.bodylinesinc.com[/URL]
 
I'm an Old School Flake wholesale distributor for the Southern states and can get you guys store costs on the flake if you need it.
 
Grant, I'm surprised you flew the painter all the way to Japan but couldn't remove the bumpers, door caps, door handles or washer nozzles to paint the car right? Did you guys paint the jambs as well? Quality goes a long way. Removing that stuff before painted takes very little time but will be better in the long run. You can't sand in between the door handles and the body, the clear will eventually flake off the edges...I'm sure he knows what he's doing but sometimes cutting corners will bite you in the rear...
 
Don't worry though, it shouldn't show up in the magazine pics =)
 
ps  that mask he's using is pretty much USELESS

it's different, and i like it...i'm just not sure i can see it looking all that great on this style of car.  i know it would look good on a drift car, that's for sure.  still, after all the buffing and wet-sanding and the putting on of parts i'll start to see your vision.  i'd really like to see your cars when they are finished.  good luck with the car mags!

Say the cars already black, if you want to touch up the paint cant you just sand down the clear coat, then another layer of black, and finish it with flake/clear coat?

Cause i plan on doing a purple flake.

Yeah, pretty much. But that's not much different from any other complete paintjob, because you'll still have to sand the car thoroughly and level it.
That's what I did to my Protege - scuffed the clear down, leveled the repairs, and resprayed in silver with a wee bit of pearl in the clear.

One thing to consider though, is that if you don't cut deep, you could  be adding up to... 1 or two layers of black, plus one to 3 layers of clear base with the flake in it, then a couple coats of clear to bury it, then more clear to finish it. So, if you end up with too many layers the paint will be more vulnerable to cracking and flaking.

The flake is House of Kolor Fuschia.  

Personally when I get a paint job done that is multistage I will have the base coat sprayed on the bumpers off the car, and then the flake or pearl with the bumpers loosely on the car to get an even smooth coverage.  This ensures that the amount of flake/pearl applied evenly matches the body.  Then remove the bumpers and apply the remaining clear layers with the bumpers off the car again.  Not everyone sprays the same way or uses the same methods (it all depends on the painter, my Z was done a different way as well with the Ice Pearl).  My uncles have sprayed cars for the Roadster Shows and World of Wheels shows.  Both paint entirely different ways, both produce awesome results as proven by my chopped, channeled, and body dropped 38' Chevy Master Deluxe Sedan that was featured in Hot Rod.  So to suggest a method is fine, but remember that it's just your method...yes you may share it with many others, but it's not the only way to get the job done.

so for the roadster show, you don't remove door handles...wow...and since you mentioned magazine coverage...that doesn't mean anything because the photos will hide a lot of crap.  Try taking half assed cars to sema and see...

BUmpers were painted off the car,
Door panels stayed on, cause well i dont care.
paint only needs to last till next year, when he is comming back to do a widebody on both cars.
ALl the stuff was put back on teh car for even flake distribution. 
Jambs were flaked on doors, trunk, and hood. no corners cut here, except washer nozzles, i forgot about those lol

Hahaha, the guy painting his car has painted cars from SEMA.  Funny you mentioned that.  And honestly...I can't believe you even typed that first sentence.  Do I have to spell everything out in black and white for you?

I'm sure he does it the right way for SEMA cars...or err at least I hope he does.  I was simply stating that he was flown half way around the globe to do a half ass job....well not so half ass now that Grant stated the above...but he did cut corners.  So defend him all you want, corners were cut.  You stated that theres different ways to paint...so did he cut corners or not??

BTW Grant, I like your thinking outside the box on this one.  The pink flake is definately outside the box and should look good in the magazine.

yeah, a few corners were cut im sure, but it doesnt matter, as like i said, when he comes back next year, full metal widebodies on at least my car, and a respray on hers for hte next show season.

Believe me, he woudlnt be here if his work wasnt worth it, plus i got a slammin deal on price, so i dont really car.

Most painters know how to do things the right way but sometimes they don't.  I wasn't taking anything away from his talent, and his talent wasn't in question, it was his prep that was ;)  The full metal widebody should look really good.  My partner did an  metal widebody integra for SEMA a couple years back for a wheel booth.  BTW you guys on base are spoiled by that paint booth as well....

My paint job was fucked up during the pick up process = rushing and cut my paint when they buffed ... so going back ... + blown compressor ... just got it back today !!

Wet sand = high ass gloss ....   will be waiting for more photos ...  should be raw bro ..

tomorrow we will wetsand and buff both cars. he is painting the extra bumpers and stuff wednesday

Btw, for your wife's car, have you tried disconnecting the rear air lines? You need to stick a toothpick in it to open the valve, but at least then you will be able to get it down!

all of my door panels, center console, trim below the radio are covered in fur, along with the b and c and a pillars. and im sure ill do more. 
But all the interior pieces such as switchplates etc etc that were once wood are now black w pink flake

Definitely a unique and adventurous choice.  It definitely has a 
very "Japanese" look to it, and I say that only because you don't
see many cars in the US with that style paint job and the Japanese
are known to love the Lowrider culture - where we DO see a lot of
heavy flake paint jobs.

Can't wait to see it all put together sitting at proper stance, etc.

The only thing I would have done differently would be to remove
all the glass and window mouldings, along with the door handles
and lower trim panels. I understand why you didn't go the extra
mile with this (I spent $100+ on replacement clips alone), but I am
a paint nut and can't everlook stuff like that.

well its nota huge deal, the paint didnt turn out as good as we would like, so in 6 months he is comming back, doing a metal widebody, and repainting it. so im not too worrrie dabout it

the celsior turned out fantastic though

i would tell him to stay and repaint it before he leaves.  thats money man.  He needs to get it done right.

Even if the paint didnt turn out as good as a 5star show quality car. But it will work for now since he will be redoing the paint soon anyways.

Now if he wasnt getting it redone in the future, i would see why it would be a problem.

for the price i paid, not a big deal. my cars one color, it will work until he comes back. Pictures can hide alot of things friends.

the cedric has been wetsanded, but it needs to be buffed, and a few touch ups done.
Im not really too happy with it, you might get some pictures, but more of the celsior than the y33.

due to Mike sucking ass at painting my car, i chose to keep the stagea when the base told me i had to get rid of one of my cars (i owned 4, i can only have 2) so i chose the stagea and the celsior.

all vehicles are registered through an on base office to get a base Sticker to allow you on base.

the air force did away with DOD stickers over a year ago, do you still have to have stickers over there?
