Acura Legend, is it VIP, or VIP style

i always found Acura Legend sedans or coupes to be very clean and VIP looking. i used to own one and now im looking to get another one again. how come i dont see them much on the site?
i think a black Acura Legend 2nd gen -91-95. slammed, with a kit and big rims and an exhaust would be sick. are they just rare, or not popular?

not popular
Do what you want to do, just remember it's more than just a kit, big wheels, and lowering.

Good luck.

check out acura-legend.com its a very popular car. I am an ex legend owner myself. They are even some nice Vip styled examples in japan. But it is NOT a vip platform car.

Count the number of FWD cars in the VIP platform camp... you wont find any. VIP cars are all RWD, mostly V8's. Nothing honda has ever made really fits into the VIP category.

My thoughts on all this is,
If you already own one then go for it!
This car is becoming one of the most popular non-vip platform cars in Japan and in the US!
But if you are gonna buy one, you should jus spend the same amount of money on a true VIP platform and do it the right way!!!

But here's my FAVORITE KA9! Dosen't look sporty and is jus PLAIN SICK!!!!!!!!!
IMO this one can hang w/ any of the True VIP platforms as far as styling goes!

hell yes! I have been looking for more pics of this KA9 since a picture was posted a while back. Does it say the specs on the wheel/tire and suspention? Which mag is it and month I want to pick it up!

I have a KA9 with plans to make it VIPstyle. Hopefully I'll have some pics by the spring.

I still miss my KA8.....it's a timeless design that still looks fresh today. VIP....nah, but nice platform to mod (KA7 or KA8), and now they are affordable. Problem is that aftermarket support is virtually non-existent. The KA9's are nice and can be modded in the VIP fashion like a Mode kit.

I honestly want u to try and pull off a styled G2 Legend.
I used to have a couple of these a while back. Even tho ive moved past them, they will ALWAYS catch my eye when I see them on the street....even stock ones!

They have sum of the sexiest bodylines found on a 4door:biggthumpup:

I agree with everyone here. The Acura Legend, though a very nice car, i wouldn't call it a VIPcar.

As for the KA9 years 99-04, the popularity amongst the aftermarket and the booming of it, quickly becoming Sentia pt.2, would make it the only quintessential VIPCar available from Honda/Acura, i feel. Being able to Fit Dished wheels (purpose of RWD), Large (the same size as a UCF21 Celsior), and luxury oriented. It fills the needs of being a VIPcar in its purest form so, just as myself, i'd call the KA9 a VIP Car.

But like Widebody Q said Don't get caught up on people call it. just do it for you.

Bro, I may be an old fart, but hear me out.

Before the infamous quote by the infamous VIP guy; VIP Style has been done on several platforms that are not V8/RWD. And there several parts out there to prove it, several rides out there to prove it, and several pictorials out there to prove it. The market just went into a transition.

If you do any KA7 - KA9, and do it right; I'll be the first to say that your ride is VIP. Period.

Ding, ding, ding!

I mean in all honesty to me they're mostly vip styled..but a few have made me raise an eyebrow. It all depends on your level of dedication. Hopefully new paint is part of that..haha.

wow!! very impressed with this thread. rear reclining seats sounds so tasty. I've also heard that if your KA9 has the navi option. You can also retro fit the rear/reverse camera to your existing navigation off of the new KB1 RL's. It's yet to be tested and hopefully I can write a thread about it soon.

Curious on what kind of aero does this KA9 have?? I did a little research and it doesn't seem to be the mode parfume nor the aimgain kit.

definitely the "old" style mode parfume. the difference is in the fog lights. also the chrome inserts are custom because on the aftermarket kit they are all FRP

so since it's the old style mode parfume does it mean that it's discontinued in japan? I prefer this one hands down than the new one. Due to the fact that the new one wraps around the license plate. what if you wanna roll without it you'll have that square indentation that looks tacky

ka9's are cool.

but given a choice of dropping some major cash on a real 8 cylinder, rear wheel drive big body car vs a ka9 front wheel drive 6 cyl midsized car, there is no doubt that the real v8 rear wheel drive full sized sedan takes the trophy IMO.

the money spent on the kit, susp, wheels will be the same, mind as well do it on a car that will give out a bigger presence.

I don't know man. If the KA9 is midsized so is the UCF2x...

Doesn't matter to me as long as it's large and fits dishes. KA9, UCF20, Y33 all fit the bill nicely. The only real "BIG" bodies are the F50 and the USF40.

Line up a W140 next to a Y33,then line up a W140 next to a USF40 and you'll see what i mean.

I use W140 because the phrase "Big Body" was coined in reference to the Benz S-Class. That's the "definition" of big body.

But here's my FAVORITE KA9! Dosen't look sporty and is jus PLAIN SICK!!!!!!!!!
IMO this one can hang w/ any of the True VIP platforms as far as styling goes!

a kitted y33 , ucf20, ucf31 looks just as big as that benz.

we are talking ka9 vs other vipcar's, no need to bring up something that has nothing to do with the equation. Why not just bring up the ford exursion ? or a u haul truck ? or a cadillac eldorado ? =)

that benz would be a sweet cantidate for vip for sure!

I say do it, show and and then talk it.

man just build the dern car. the vip game is follow the leader over here anyway. you see them in mags and major companies make parts so you already know whats up, its just gonna take a while for everyone else to realize it and then tell you what to do... i say bypass all that and do your thing.

and for the record, order in which i place the mentioned cars:
y33<ka9<f50<w140

you can get caught up in the hype but i'll just go by what i like better. thanks.

i say that they are.
sure they arn't the traditional Celesior, Aristo, Cima, Gloria etc but just because it isnt rwd doesn't mean it isn't vip. there are limos that are fwd and its not a sports car so who cares if its fwd. it looks mean and fits right in the vip crowd so i say dont listen to anyone, just do it up nicely and if you like iot thats all that matters. I got a GS/Aristo and find the KA9 really attractive.

And I was noticing the other day that the RL shares VERY similar lines to a 99 Mercedez S Class. And the new LS430 have similiar lines to the RL also. Definitely has VIP style but not one of the "true hardcore" platforms.

I absolutely love mine :D

The legend is not an RL atleast in the US. I remember this argument on the a-l forum. I'd love to see a prints of what RL,TSX, etc... really stands for, but surely the RL is no Legend. I've heard acura dealer repeat this.

I am conveinced(sp) about the following:

LE - Luxury Edition
SE - Standard Edition
L - Luxury
LS - Luxury Sport

The older RL's were KA9 Honda Legends, so they were Legends in Japan. I think the 2nd generation Legends have a timeless look, regardless if they are not a VIP platform. I have seen some really nicely modded Legends picking up some VIP styling. Also the Mode RL really caught my eye back in the day.

Again, I really miss my KA8. I was actually thinking about a KA7, but it's really hard finding a TypeII 6-speed in a sedan.

Yeah.. those are all RL's. Where does it say Acura Legend? Keep in mind I did say "in the US" in my earlier post. What they do over-seas is hardly relevant to me. Im strictly concerned about the US models. This debate can go on forever, but there really is no need.

man seriously?

are you for real?

there is no debate.

1/2g acura legends are the same car as the 1/2g honda legend (think lexus/toyota, nissan/infiniti). for the 3g acura dropped the legend monicker and went with rl while the jdm honda remained a legend. there was no legend/rl overlap because it is the same car, a honda legend (rebaged acura legend or rl in the u.s. depending on generation).

3 posts and 2 of them are non-sense. great start. BIG LETTERS DON'T MAKE YOU RIGHT.

This can go on forever! Why can't people just understand and get it in their head that it is an Rl in the US and a Legend in Japan? Also, that it's only vip-STYLED and not a true vip platform. Man, i don't know why i'm still in vip101. BUT i understand now why you guys created it....:giggity:

I still don't get why people get so caught up over a title. Build a bad ass car and the "big boys" will let you hang with reguardless if its a platform or just a styled non platform.

a little off the original subject...but what do you guys think would have happend if Honda had made the Legend a rear-drive v8? It seems like that is the main thing keeping it from being a true "platform".

But again, I do realize that "platforms" are only relevant to the title of Vip car. If you build a bitchin' legend, you're still allowed to hang out with the toyota and nissan'ers.

I think to answer your question of what is / would be, the first thing to do is to decide where the car fits into the spectrum of that particular maker (to a degree even the maker itself compared with other makers). What tier is it apart of? ie. luxury or economic passenger, i mean if you wanna do up an accord you do you. Is it considered a flagship vehicle in the line-up? Generally the attributes that determine the factors are, size (not compact), width (we like'em low and wide), lots of amenities (powered, self-leveling, wood grain, leather, etc).

Yeah good point, the Rl has all those...just not the drivetrain. And it was Honda's luxury platform also. Just somethin to think about

Acura is still stuck on creating those hideous looking RL's &TL's. The 91-95 Legends were the best thing from Acura. So, in Dec,2005 I had to move up in weight calss. Anything after 1995 (RL,TL, TSX,RSX etc..) has been junk from acura in my opinion. The key word here is "my opinion" so spare me the rebuttal. Acura's lack of ability to build a V8 turned me away and pushed me into the Y34 back in 2005, which was all good!

No rebuttal, but if I may say so, that's a pretty weak reason for not liking Hondas (classic, but vague and ill-supported).

I did say spare me of the rebuttal, RIGHT ? Amazing!!! Absolutely amazing!!

You must be joking or just straight bored by responding with that comment. I never said I dis-like Hondas. The word Honda never came out of my fingers. And as for my comment being “weak classic, but vague and ill-supported” Deal with it!!! This is the reason I only visit here once a week. See ya next week.:inoutwavey:

Think of it this way: In the seventies, to drive a Japanese car in the US was kind of outcast, like driving an appliance. In the 80's Japanese cars started to take note on what Americans wanted from their cars, copying some designs and such. The 90's came around and the Japanese were coming out with some very good (reliable, cheap, interesting, colorful, well-engineered) cars. Notice during this time American cars were getting worse and worse. Fast forward to today. American car companies are struggling and Japanese car companies are doing fine.

Hyundai is just trying to do what Honda and Toyota did in the early 90's. The only thing they didn't do is rename the car some upscale marquee (Toyota=Lexus, Honda=Acura, Hyundai=Hyundai?).

six pages on this topic ......come on ....do really need permission from the vip gods or anybody else for that matter on this? so what if some people just don't think honda can do luxury to the level of vip status. its made in japan, it has four doors, its the flagship of its band. and its kinda of the ''vip underdog''.
i saw this one from some recent show coverage. looks like it was the only ka9legend there holding it down. talk about crushing your competition at a show. at the end of the day isn't that what it's all about......not following the pack, but standing out from it. especially if the odds are against you.

Damn that one is stunning. I think another reason you don't see a lot of KA9's done VIPstyle is because they simply didn't sell that many compared to other platforms.

true statement. I love how the genesis looks and feels in the Luxury standpoint. Now if you look at it, the sedan of that car is being used for V.I.P folks in Korea and its just a real bad-ass ride. Seriously, now 40k (did some research) for a hyundai..still is the only marker gettin me. My wife and I are acually looking at it real tough though. I mean it comes with mad features

375HP 4.6L DOHC 32-valve V8 engine with dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT)
- ZF 6-speed automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC®
- 18-inch Hyper Silver alloy wheels with P235/50R18 tires
- Chrome lower bodyside moldings
- Ultra-premium leather seating surfaces
- Leather-wrapped dash and door trim inserts
- Power glass sunroof with tilt and slide
- Power tilt and telescopic steering column
- Integrated memory system
- Lexicon® 14-speaker surround sound audio system w/ in-dash 6-disc CD changer
- Illuminated door sill scuff plates
- Wood-trimmed leather steering wheel
- Electrochromic outside mirrors
- Power rear sunshade
- Rain-sensing wipers w/auto defogger windshield

so in all honesty i would call this a vip ride. lets just see how and who styles it to be what it is :dunnored:

Regardless of whether its a true platform or just a VIP style car, the KA9s look sick when modded. Love the classic lines, reminds me of an older S-Class or LS430 in a way. Only gripe I have is the measely 225hp, 4spd tranny, non-VTEC V6 in a heavy car like that. Could have benefited from a 5th gear or more power, perhaps both. The new RL is gorgeous IMO and would look even better VIP styled. Honda reliability, 300hp V6 with AWD that splits torque from front to rear as well as side to side... sign me up. I think there's a good reason Honda doesn't release a V8. If they can squeeze 200+ horsepower out of a naturally aspirated 4 cylinder, imagine what they could do with 4 more cylinders.

Yeah I hear that Honda/Acura is planning on using a V8-powered RWD drivetrain in the 2010 RL. I've heard 4.5l and over 400hp. I guess they plan on shifting the lineups a bit to compete more with the "Tier 1" luxury imports like Mercedez, BMW, and Lexus. Should be interesting.

I think this is the only segment of the car scene that has "platform" vehicles that are held on a pedestal higher than other cars. I understand the history and tradition behind these platform cars, but don't understand why people are so eager and desperate to conform and not stray from the beaten path into uncharted territory. We modify cars to be different, to stand out from others. Too many people are concerned with what people think and are modding their cars to fit in instead of stand out. The best way to get noticed is to be different. If everyone rides around in Lexus GS and LSs, Infiniti Qs and Ms, where's the individuality? That's why I left the Honda scene. Everyone's car is alike. You see a Civic on the street that's lowered on wheels with JDM exterior pieces, you can assume its probably swapped. The shit's too predictable. I'm starting to see the same trend with this car scene. Oh, you're into VIP cars? I'll immediately assume you drive one of the platform cars on air and one of 10 different wheels. Don't get me wrong, I think VIP styling is outstanding and by far the cleanest form of modification on cars. I just wish more people were more concerned with experimenting with different cars instead of just going straight for the platform vehicles or constantly asking "Is this VIP, is that VIP". Do you. Mod the car to your taste and liking, not others. Just my 2 cents.

Yeah I get that. I know its not a platform and that its considered a VIP styled car. I know what cars are platforms. I was simply expressing my opinion of how it shouldn't matter if the car is a platform or styled car, just mod the damn thing and make it look good. People are too concerned with titles and what others think. They act like there are VIP police roaming the streets pulling cars over because they're not platform cars.

I got what your sayin, but are the ppl that say those things friends of yours? I know lots of peeps into this and none of em are like that. I generally exp the drama of it here in forums, and most are defending the fact they chose a non-platform and feel the need to blather about what is and whats not out of defense for their decision. I don't care what ppl choose to do as long as they are happy w/ the outcome. Threads like this tell most of us who is who anyways..

No, this is just a general observation I've noticed on this site and in threads on other sites. Not everyone is guilty. None of my friends drive VIP cars. Nobody around here drives em. All of my friends drive turbo Hondas and other imports, a few Audi guys. In fact, only a handful of my friends know of the VIP scene and most of them seem to think VIP guys are all snobby. That's why I'm here. Something new, something a lot of people around here aren't familiar with and don't understand or have some backwards assumption towards. The VIP scene has produced some absolutely gorgeous cars and the scene itself seems to have more prestige and class than any other. I've sprinkled our local car club's site with pics of clean VIP cars and they drool over them. On the other hand, some guys are like "why the hell would you slam a luxury car like that" or "those rims are ugly as hell", etc. I'm glad some of them like the cars, I just hope the scene doesn't explode like the import craze did in the 90's and strip the exclusiveness. I'm sure its different on the west coast, but even seeing a Lexus or Infiniti here is somewhat rare, even in Minneapolis, save for the IS300s and G35s. Its all SUVs, trucks, muscle cars, and the minority of Hondas and DSMs.

The VIP culture is based on tradition....and tradition includes the car platforms. The main issue on VIP in the US is the fact that only a subset of true VIP platforms made it over here to the US. Yes, die hard VIP enthusiasts will stick to the traditional platforms, and good bad or indifferent, will not stray from this guideline. Some take it too far and are too rigid, thusly seem to be snobby. Since only a few VIP platforms made over here, we cannot afford to be “platform snobs”. Sure, we should be educated on the meaning, tradition, and characteristics of VIP tuning, but we also need to embrace this type of modification and be able to apply it correctly to other platforms here in the US. This forum use to have a lot of “platform snobs”, which is why I stopped coming here, but lately, it’s been better. I think one of the things that bother some of the enthusiasts is utilization of “copy” or “fake” brands. This is one area where we should all be “snobs”…… :giggity:

That's what I was getting at. The "snobs" and the ones who are dead set on pleasing them instead of themselves. Understand the tradition, harness it, and incorporate it into your own vehicle, regardless of what it is. It's our tradition as Americans, whether we realize it or not, to adopt other culture's traditions, make them our own, and add our own unique twist to it. I think some people are just a little too obsessed with following the old school Japanese traditions. This isn't Japan. Everyone wants their cars to be JDM or look like they do overseas, yet, they're modifying American cars over there to look like our own scenes as well. Do you think they're this strict when modifying their cars over there? Probably not. Another American tradition... finding something to bitch about. I just find it kind of amusing that there's these two sectors within VIP tuning. You have VIP platforms and you have VIP-styled cars. No other scene has guidelines like this. Like imports, you're either JDM or you're not. There's no "JDM-styled" cars. Same for DUBS, lowriders, jacked up rock crawler trucks, muscle cars, etc. But we definitely got screwed in terms of availability to Japanese cars... so many engines and models we don't get.

Being a non-platform is not any kind of discredit, it's simply a reclassification imo mainly based on level of luxury from manufacturer and drivetrain. I'm sure the japanese have a catagorie name for this, as they do for compacts, vans, etc...but why does it matter either way?

same old same old on vsc.

nothing matters other than the respect you show yourself and others.

if you prefer a platform and build traditional that's cool. if you're building a non-platform that's cool too. neither is guaranteed positive or negative results.

what is a problem is when you disrespect those on the other side of the fence. platform builders saying "you're car aint s**t because it's not a platform", or non platform cats attacking traditionalists for being "close minded".

the vip label isn't s**t but 3 letters. pressing a non-platform for "vip status" is no less lame than saying "nothing but these 10 cars can ever be anything in the vip scene".

thankfully most of this garbage has been squashed on vsc and it really should just be left that way.

happy building!

It's not that serious. If its done right, no one will say shit. In fact, this thread is pretty old and most of the guys no longer care as much as they used to. It's not like you are trying to make a Miata fit in. Its a 4 door mid size luxury car so already you fit in much more than most. When done correctly, they look better than some "platforms."

As far as the platform thing goes, some of the bigger vip shows in Japan won't have any Legends in but this isn't Japan. No one isn't going to be your friend because you drive an Acura and they drive an Infiniti lol.
