Why Don't More VIP Guys Run Hydraulics?

Does anyone have a legitimate reason why they went air over hydraulics? The only reason I ask is because hydraulics seem to be inexistent in the culture, and I feel they should have their rightful place :biggthumpup: I mean afterall, you get a better ride with hydraulics (accumulators make your car float), you get a lot more lift (ala travel), the setups are much cleaner looking (when done right), and there is a complexity that comes along with hydraulics which make very few people understand them. The Japanese get REALLY insane on some of their hydraulic setup for lowriders, and I was curious why the two have yet to mesh.

FYI, you are better off running air on a car with a Macpherson front end, I'm just wondering about everyone else. Any feedback?

One acronym...E.P.A.  Well, that or something..they aren't legal here in Hawaii last time I checked, but we still put them on lowriders.  Air is far less of a mess..and definately less of a mess if there's a problem or fault.  Just my $0.02

im not an expert on air/hydros, but i had the oppurtunity to test drive "tanks" old LS400 when it was up for sale. he had the hydro system and the ride was herky jerky, but the hydro was deff. quicker f/b/ss, then most air out there. only negetive side with hydro is oil leaks. hate to see puddles inside yer ride. at least with air leaks, you can patch in emergency and run the compressor for a bit. once yer out of oil, yer tuck down.

btw, depending on yer setup, 4-15 batteries! yikes you need to keep it charged every other day depending on yer useage, and not to mention the added weight. thats no joke.

You said it best, I think they're more for lowriders than anything but i love the set up u have going on your ride.

The batteries, the hydraulic fluids etc.

It seems more complicated to acheive the same thing, or more than is needed.

I think that's why most people stay away from it now.

nowadays the ride quality of airbags are similar to most comfort spec coilovers...hydro's are bumpy and can sometimes feel like you're steering a big boat...
 
and todays cars don't have ginormous trunks like the old days...10+ batteries will take up a good chunk of your trunk...

^^^and you gotta charge them. 8hrs per battery i believe, but if you have the multi batt charger then your good. but still 8hrs?? bout 5-min to fill up air

I actually inquired about hydraulics with a guy down the street who is big into low riders. He said, it's definitely not worth it, since there are air systems made for my car, or coilovers, to just get those. It's a bitch when something breaks, especially a strut.

What you do not know about Frank's car is he did not have accumulators. The reason his car rode like ass is because he wasn't essentially riding on anything.

That is not true about the 4-15 batteries. My car only has two batteries (24 volt system) and I charge it once a week at night. Yeah, there is certainly extra weight, but not nearly as much with two batteries.

Once again, hydros are NOT bouncy if done properly. Also, two batteries is more than sufficient for a daily driver setup (as myself).

I have a 24 volt charger, and one night a week I leave my car in the garage to be charged. I awake in the morning to a fresh charge :biggthumpup:

cool, thanks for the update. i must be showing my age. 30yrs. ago lot of the lowriders would stack alot of batteries due to inferior technology/setup that they had back then, compared to now. also, i was thinking more on the hopping and dancing then cruising.

Yeah, accumulators are a fairly new thing (within the last ten years or so). You definitely could not hop with two batteries, but you can have an extremely reliable system.

ride quality is way better on bags than hydros

My main reason was trunk space
2 batteries, dumps, pumps, larger lines to run than air, less support in japan for hydros
 
My entire air setup with the coilovers and suspensino was like 2100 bucks. and it rides exactly how i wanted.

Also, everything brand new with the best of the best for a reliable setup for me was around $2000.

lol,... I highly doubt it.  I have a 2001 LS430 Ultimate Luxury which I am running stock toyota air struts with some custom modifications to run an aftermarket air management system.  My struts still utilize the stock damping ecu which adjusts itself depending on how much air is in the strut.  Not only does it adjust itself with how much air is in the strut, it also adjusts itself on how fast the car is driving.  The faster I go the ecu adjusts the damping stiffer or softer when I slow down.   My ride feels better than the day I got her from the dealership.


One of my good friends, he also posts here as (arabretard) has a 89 cutty on hydros.  He sports like 8 batteries and 3 pumps.  His ride was very bouncing and rough at first.  We would stop at a light and still be bouncing...lol.  Now that he is running some acumulators his ride quality has gotten a lot better, but it is no where near my ride quality.  Id really love to see how your ride quality is.  But, I have yet to sit in a car with hydros that rides better or even close to my cars ride quality.

Here is a pic when I was installing it. I am going to go crazy on the setup this summer and redo the entire setup with hardlines, etc.

I would say my car rides nicer than stock. It is a very SOFT suspension and definitely not for the performance-minded person. The nice thing about hydraulics is that I can roll tucking rim or at a stock-height type level and the car rides exactly the same. I was very over the super low bouncing of springs very fast.

I rode in  car built for hopping ... = OMg bouncy lol at 30 mph ... I'd hate to be my brothers car on the freeway ... 


I'd love to learn more , and if i had hydros .. It would have made me fix my leak faster than I have... in my air system ..
