adding to the VIP platform
If Toyota or Nissan makes a new RWD big body sedan, does it become a VIP platform? Like say Toyota makes a new flagship car above the LS series. Its instant VIP platform right? If not im guessing the VIP congress in Japan has to vote the car into the platform :smiley-rofl:. Seriously though, understanding what the requirements of a VIP platform car is, am I right to assume if a new flagship Toyota/Lexus,Nissan/Infiniti Model came out, it automatically is a VIP platform?
On the other side of things, what would happen if Honda/Acura released a big body flagship RWD V8? If it was not considered VIP platform, would that decision be based merely on brand name alone? The reason I am asking this is because my understanding of VIP platform is Japanese car, RWD, big body, and luxury. In the past the only cars that could fit inside that segment was Toyota and Nissan. Honda is Japanese, so if they adapted to the other requirements would they be allowed?

Not always. It depends on the styling, the initial marketing / taget buyer, etc. For example, the GS (Aristo) was not a VIPcar at first. Most VIP club members lumped it into the same group as the Laurel or the Chaser. However, as marketing shifted and ideas adjusted it slowly became an accepted platform.
Furthermore, just being RWD, Japanese, and 4 Door does not mean VIP. See the aforementioned Laurel and Chaser. Also look at the Altezza. Those sedans tend to fall into the more tuner / drift scene.

You'll receive various answers to this question. To be honest there's a gray area, and no one person creates this decision. It's pretty much the market that drives it although some people seem to think it's set in stone which is far from the truth.

What about a bigger than the LS Lexus with a 750bhp V12 twin turbo that is very reliable, has reclining rear seats that's equipped with heat, cooling and a shiatsu massager, a fridge and microwave for the food on the run, and has some crystals on the rear door handles, dehumidifier and humidifier, electric curtains, standard JDM 20" deep dish, air ride, a trunk and "cosmetic" floor boards made of solid hardwood, and more "unnecessary" features and is designed to mess with the Maybach Benz's???
Could that be VIP material?

haha seriously i dont think nissan will make a car bigger than the Q45. if by some chance they did make a vehicle bigger than the Q, and it fit the requirements of VIP, i think it should automatically be accepted as a VIP chassis.

Yeah! it might be more of a private jet with no wings... Yachts mostly have nice hot tubs for 6 peeps.
I almost forgot, It should have a sat-dish with TiVo and HD service, HDTV, PS3 and/or Wii, and a surround sound system from a high end Japanese audio brand!
That would be perfect!

The gs is the typical VIP Platform car alot or most ppls have it...Also the q45 just depends on how you tune it right? That makes it fit the VIP style criteria...

my thinking is the flagship of the japanese car culture, whether it be infinti/toyota/lexus/nissan, but then again everything can be vip styled. even the new '09 hyundai genesis. looks nice, but idk yet

Honda did release a big body flagship sedan (sans RWD).
-Honda Legend/Acura RL (KA9)
As did Mazda.
-Mazda Sentia/929 (HD/HE)
There have also been 4WD VIP cars.
-Toyota Crown Majesta (UZS155)
RWD is not mandatory. However, it is much more difficult to accomplish the desired stance with FWD cars. The bias is more dependent on difficulty than unwritten "VIP rules".

the RL legend ka9 is midsized at most.
It never had the presence of a big body sedan. Even the ucf10 and the G50 are bigger. You would need a fully kitted RL just to make it look close in size to the ucf10 ls400 and the G50 q45. Hence why I sold it quick and got me a y33 q45.

The Legend was not much different than the Celsior. Neither the Legend nor the Sentia have been popular VIP cars, but they are genuine alternatives and need to be included. My point was to illustrate that constrictive rules can lead to confusion since there are many exceptions in the VIP scene.

I dunno how accurate those numbers are and how the measurements were taken, but just by visual comparision, the RL just looked considerably smaller.

The specifications were taken from Wards Automotive Yearbook which compiles manufacturer data (i.e. industry standards).

EXACTLY what I was thinking. When VIP companies pick up and market parts for the car, THEN it will become a VIP car. Now...It all depends on why they choose that car. Is it because people are styling them that way? Or is it because the companies approve of it? I'm also guessing that it needs to be a number of big name companies that start producing products for the car for it to become classified as an accepted platform.
Do the CEO's of the companies call each other and say "Hey, we should make parts for this car" and then it becomes a vip car? LOL.

Those cars could pull off the look easily if slammed with nice wheels that fit properly. Dont ever call it VIP though, the purists would hang you.

I think USDM VIP would suit it perfectly. Caddi's, Buicks, Lincolns, and Chryslers have always been the American made luxury cars. I could see a few cars being deemed acceptable to create a USDM VIP culture from.
300c
ford 500 platform (lincoln mkz/zephyr)
DTS & STS
Lucerne and Lacrosse
While I think ATM after market companies linked solely on American cars are sticking more to the DUB trend, they may catch on. So far only the Final Konnexion STS looks anything near VIP. The others seem too show car/sema looking to be a luxury VIP styled kit or car. Wheels have poor offset, and it sits terribly high... especially that white one... looks like it's 16's on stilts =/

No NO NO NO NO!
It doesn't work this way. You can't take anything and call it vip...it pertains to certain cars, and that's it.
Sure they may look good slammed with wide wheels, but it will NOT be vip styled. Simply does not work that way.
Just like taking a (if you are in to it) neon or cavelier, throwing on some 'tuner' rims and an exhaust, and calling your car a sport compact racer....it may 'look' the same, but will not be the 'inspired' honda so to speak.

lol watch what you say. yes. I've seen neon's and chavi's that looks near stock from appearance. I would consider them sport compact tuner cars. Especially a ACR neon. I have friends here with RWD converted caveliers
Not necessarily saying USDM cars should be started being called VIP cars, I'm far from thinking/saying that, But I think companies should look into them more for VIP styled kits. There's a good number of nice USDM large saloon platforms out there that, while they'd look good slammed, would be more capable because of their technological goodies and general appeal/buyers market.
What makes a JDM VIP car in japan is a very expensive large saloon with countless factory luxury items. Parallel that to American car company's cars and you've found yourself a good candidate for experimentation for a new style. Not saying a Y34 president and a Lincoln MKZ/zephyr should BOTH be considered vip cars. But I do believe that to open a larger market for buyers in different countries and in the general way of trying new things. USDM larger saloons would be a good start for some "USDM VIP styled" cars.

I think SMS is heading in the right direction, Kit's still not really vip, stance is nice. Wheel fitment is still crap. As is the offset. But the US's luxury tuned cars are slowly starting to fade from DUB and moving in a step to this new style thats not really VIP, and not dub. Straight static drops are still something USDM tuning companies have to learn to fix if they do want to explore the VIP fad that I've seen more and more of each year.

There is only ONE USDM car, that has ever been used as a vip styled car. That was the 300C Touring, used by Anceltion (bankrupt) and Job Design. That's IT. No other cars have ever fit or passed the vip test, no other cars have had products produced by vip companies, that were US cars. It just doesn't happen. Just accept it as it is here, and don't try to change it. This site is for enthusiasts of a style that can only be replicated as it is seen in Japan. That's it. If you want to make your own 'usdm vip' style or whatever, go do it. We won't stop you.
Just notice how many people are here with USDM cars. Just really, take a look around. All who have them, have either left, or have taken their cars and traded them in for the right kind. There's only one or two people here who have 300C's, that are all "jdm'd out" so to speak.
Please stop comparing apples to oranges. Thanks.

Thanks.

i think the 300c is further away from Vip then the ka9legend, and the mazda 929

id rather see a four door large rwd buick or caddy styled right than a "vip styled" civic, 240, lancer etc... btw i think that black buick lucerne with just a little bit better fitment and a lower stance can pull off vip real well.

I'm not saying I'm looking to make any USDM VIP styled car. I'd rather an infinity or Lexus. Better build quality, and authenticity of the style. I came here because I love the authentic VIP cars, also came here to eventually get a little help once I buy either a y33 Q45, or a 03-04 M45. The fact that I own a MKZ and showed you a zephyr isn't much further from coincidence.
What I don't think you're understanding is that I'm not saying we should add USDM cars to the platform list, not at all. The reason for the list of "true" VIP platforms is to keep the VIP style as a Japanese only style, and one that is only done on the most luxurious cars out there. Though with the addition of a small number of kits for some USDM cars I think we should wonder where they might go with it. There's a few cars I could see as being VIP styled from the states. DTS, STS, and the 300c are the one's I'd put out there seriously as my opinion. Just remember, we're not actually any of the people who officially decides on this matter. Because all these platforms that have come up, are nothing but thought. Wouldn't make a real difference unless a VIP styling company starts making products for it. Until then, none of it's VIP styled. And won't be "USDM VIP styled". It's just fodder... and this being a jap VIP forum, I'll drop it cause it doesn't really pertain to anything I'm planning anyway.
what I would definutely like to see, is more kits for the M45.

Good luck with more kits for the m45....the new G look alike is a disappointment compared to the previous generation. I say you go for the 01-02 version, with it's sleek design, and it's something a bit more rare to see on these forums.

I know it is for the most part, but this is really the right place for people that want a "VIP" look in a non-VIP ride.

I'm stuck between wanting a y33 cima or a M45... I rarely see M45 VIP cars, even online. And I'd love to go unique on it. BUT, the reason I'm interested in VIP now more then I have been is because it will serve me a practical use. I will need to be carrying at least 4 people most of the time. So I'd rather a bigger 4-door. I have much respect for the M45, 340bhp is really nice to have and it's 0-60 time is just awesome for a luxury car. But it just doesn't have the rear leg room I'm looking for. I think in the end I will find a somewhat pre-modded (coilovers+wheels) Q45 that I can make more unique. I'll admit I am near clueless when it comes to wheel and suspension knowledge. I know that I have a special place in my heart for SSR vienna dish's and kreis'. And that I adore the vip style. I'm just waiting to find something nice so that I can start making all my talk about this reality.
anyway, back to the subject. 01-02 m45? I forgot exactly what those look like... got any nice pictures of kitted ones?

interesting thread. i take all opinions with a grain of salt though.
seems to me a car either just "has it" or doesnt. with that said i dont think the buicks caddys or acuras fit in. there is no way to quantify this as its just my opinion.
i think RWD should definetly be mandatory. again just my opinion, but all the "real" luxury cars are rwd. MB, 7 series, RR, the old glory era non taurus Jags, maybach, bentley, etc...
further to my point is that while i love jap cars they did not originate luxury cars and the germans have had wheel fitment down since before we were born. i think there should be room to consider other platforms.
having said all that i think the current chrysler 300 has it.
they may take more than just wheels and air ride to do it, but they can totally be VIP (again- imo)
i never knew there was such a thing as "VIP purists" im coming from a background of drift car knowledge and those guys can be just as ignorant as any other purists...
i didnt know it was so strictly defined anyway...
carry on with the thread.

03-04 was the first gen M which is the Y34. 06+ is the Y50 Fuga.
There was no 01-02.
Grant, I think he was talking about the Fuga

The Legend was not much different than the Celsior. Neither the Legend nor the Sentia have been popular VIP cars, but they are genuine alternatives and need to be included. My point was to illustrate that constrictive rules can lead to confusion since there are many exceptions in the VIP scene.
Good info What was the size of the Y33. Just to see if Wikipedia is correct.

Going by experience, Dark Green tends to visually "shrink" a car. I used to have a Dark green car (as did you) and for whatever reason, the car seemed a lot smaller than comparative models of the same vintage in lighter colors. In pictures it was fine, but in person it just seemed to absorb its surroundings and "shrink"
I could be crazy, though, so i dunno.

Could that be VIP material?
hahahaha, sounds like an episode of "Pimp My Ride"

DTS wouldn't count...it's FWD. Great car though, extremely comfortable...good looks too.
Can't wait for the return of the Q45 in 2012.
