DIY - Fixing those ugly old faded G50 Q45 Pillars

:pat: Most 90-96 infiniti Q45's have faded pillars that look like this...

I've been looking for chrome overlays by "Sessions" for them but they all cost alot. They have other brands too but im not going to spend alot of money on a trim piece when i need to buy other things far more important for my car. This gave me an idea. The good thing is that, this mod is done by using only $4.99. 

[B]Things needed for completion[/B]

-1xWater spray bottle
-1xCutter blade knife
-1xChome Brite Metallic Tape by TRIM BRITE 
-1xCredit card or any plastic card from your wallet 
-1xHeat Gun
-1xPaper towels


[B]Step 1.[/B]

-Open up the pack of "Trim Brite tape"
-Cut it evenly into two pieces. (3"x30" each)

[B]Step 2.[/B]

-Take your water spray bottle and spray it on to the pillar
-Clean the pillar up with paper towels and make sure there is no dirt on it.

[B]Step 3.[/B]

-Peel the Trim Brite tape off the wax paper it comes on.
-Spray water on the adhesive side of the Trim Brite tape and the pillar
-Lay the chrome strip on to the pillar and position it neatly on. If its not straight you can still move it around until you have it where you want. Thats why you spray on the water just like putting on decals. 

[B]Step 4.[/B]

-Use your credit card or any plastic card you have in your wallet and stroke it up and down (LOL!!) to force all the water/ air bubbles out.

-Blow some hot air with your heat gun on low and continue to use your plastic card until the adhesive sticks. 

[B]Step 5. [/B]

-Cut around the edges with a cutting knife. Be careful not to cut yourself. Make sure its placed on a table so when you cut, its stable and you dont cut your fingers off.

-Put it back on your car and enjoy

BY THE WAY...I find this DIY pointless... Im really bored today and im sick. 

EDIT: To take off the pillars open front and rear doors. Pry the bottom if it off. Its just held on by two clips. Becareful to not break the plastic.

I just got PREGO after doing this. I was eating an 8" sub, half a large pizza, Beef fried rice, Pancit, and drinking some Modelo beer...

It is a nice write up, and the results look great.  Coulda done w/o the belly shot though... If you think that's bad, give it another 10-15 years, drink lots of beer and don't exercise.  You'll have a nice Buddah-belly like me in no time!  lol

ROFL LOL i know i know. i just did it for $H*&'s and giggles. I took it off because it looked rediculous anyways HAHAHA

nice... i actually think this could turn out better than stick on pieces.

yea I would add that too. Thanks. My car wasnt dirty at all since i just cleaned it the other day so there was barely any dirt on there...

you cud always use a cuttin compound to polish em up bright agen

I picked them up at my local pep boys. They should have some at Advance auto parts or Auto zone.  I never used anything like this. Before when i did my friends car, I used the 3m Chrome people use for doing decals and it didnt look nice compared to this. The texture wasnt as smooth.

On the real this looks pretty good in the pics. I think the key here is to make sure that you get all the air bubbles out and that you start with a clean surface. Good idea over all IMO especially for the money.

How well does this stuff hold up to weather? Tucson Desert Sun can be pretty harsh, So this maybe a cheap mod but if it can take dry heat then I would rather have slightly faded panels then old dried out chrome stickered panels.

Seems fine, the adhesive sticks very well and the coating looks to hold up fine. ITs basically like the same material that overlays on chrome trims...If you ever peeled something like that before its kinda like aluminum foil...or thats the best of my discription.

i was also checkin out some chrome sign vinyl thats supposed to stand up to the elements for a couple years not too long ago. its all over ebay.

I did your mod today.  Looks sweet, I'll post up later.
