Scraping? How do you feel about it when it happens?
I freaking love it. Even though i'm not even close to being as low as others on this site, scraping just shows me that i'm actually riding low. I ride my rear almost at all down and my front bottoms out a lot. My ride is no where near soft, and people complain about it all the time, but when I scrape I feel like a new man! (Okay 17 isn't a man, but almost).
Even though i'm on air I could care less about raising to avoid a little scrape, now if it's about to do some damage i'll raise her up.

i dont really care unless i am messing up something. even when i scrape my bumpers a little it does not bother me that much. thats what stock bumpers are 4!. i used to drag my exhaust whenever i floor it! The way i see it is this: if your fenders are not rolled your wheels are not aggresive enough, if you aint rubbin you are not low enough, if you are not scraping your are not low enough.

The sad truth is if I don't here rubbing or scrapping then I lower the car more
I maxed my camber out rolled my front fenders and cut as much of the rear fender to avoid the noise but when I don't hear it I get self concious and think I'm riding way to high so I drop it until I hear scrapping.......Weird, I dunno why!
The the about scrapping is it always sounds worse than it really is!
When you look at the damage it's really not as bad as it sounds!
But it is embarassing to have a luxury car and have scarappin/clatter going on while you drive! To each there own......

I would rather listen to someone break all of my fingers then hear my car scrape. If you think scraping on a speedbump is bad try scraping offroad on a boulder. ALTHOUGH once we drove my 2 door cherokee down a flight of stairs by accident when we were tearing around in what we thought was park of a parking lot after the 2nd blizzard in 3 days. We came off of it sideways and grinded that bitch. $2,000 cherokee grinding stairs is ok scraping, lexus scraping? that is HORRIBLE!

I used to hate it, but today pulling into Subway parking to try the new breakfast sammies, it made that awful sound, and it didn't bother me at all. I used to try and keep the car as immaculate as possible, even the underside, but after all the years I don't care as much any more, I figure I just want to enjoy the car and I don't care what it's worth down the road, cause it a'int gonna be much!

my greddy exhaust is 4' in diameter and goes under the diff so not scraping is preety much not an option. thats why i have 20's in the rear it is rediculously strong tho. full stainless! i have been scraping the shit out of it for 3 years now and all i have done is file down the flanges a little bit:shrug: . My whole undercarrage looks like minced meat!. no real damage tho.
if i had a kit and i was scraping it i would not be too happy

With my Q I don't like it. It's a luxury car, I don't want makeing any noise. I don't want to be riding with a girl and having my car scraping and bouncing all over th place. My first car I had was a 85 Chevy Nova. I didn't care, I just wanted to ride low. It was less then inch from the ground. I cut the springs and it had 13" McLeans with 175/50/13 BFGs. I tore up my exhaust, floor pans where pushed up, cracked trans case, busted oil pan, and my whole under body was scraped. I could not even have any passengers in the back. It rode like crap! I love a slammed car as long as it could be lifted up for driving.

I kinda like it. I enjoy the challenge of taking a speedbump without scraping the pre-silencer (lowest point).
Really annoying when I'm trying to drive through some snow and I get stuck though.

It doesn't bother me..it just lets me know that I can still get to wherever I'm going at that height. With my last car I set the suspension to scrape the highest speedbump where I lived so I could ride low and still get home.

"OOOPS, maybe i should have angled a little more" is what i think. if my front bottoms out on a dip or manhole i raise it a little and remember not to ride in that lane anymore. i try not to but my exhaust scrapes all the time

I cant hear it. The glass is so thick on the F50 and there is so much sound deadening that I dont even notice it and I scrape on flat streets. Personally I dont like it, a luxury car shouldnt scrape but im working on that ;)

I cringe and get pissed at myself and wherever I scraped. I used to think it was cool when I had my 240 but after 3 exhausts and 3 front bumpers it wasnt so much. My friends 240 scraped on high spots in the road, it made me paranoid and I wasnt even driving. His frame rails are so thin you cant even put a jack under it haha.

I honestly do not like to scrape..its rather embarrising when some one sees a nicely fixed up luxury car scraping..BUT that is the point of VIP..ride low at all costs and well thats how I roll...if I know I am going to have to go somewhere that I can not make it without getting stuck..I take the LX470...anyways I try to keep my mialage down on the Q to save tires..I have 4 kids and a wife and when we all roll its in the SUV..when I am solo or with a few of the kids I will take my car..I ride 1.75" off the ground from the cats..I have to drive in a S pattern alot or park further that I would in my SUV but its all gravy...VIP is about how low can you go..but if I get to this point.

I am going to add air to my suspension

Scraping is fine... Because it infers a slow and controlled scrape (which i do pretty much everywhere i go).
On the other hand, when i am driving and my crossmember/oil sump hits a highpoint in the road unexpectedly, then i cringe and often i will pull over to check it out (to confirm its the crossmember and not the sump).

Its second nature at this point in my car modifying stage! I have been scraping in almost every car since I was 17. Even in my car with air finally, I scrape here and there. Actually got stuck gettin outta a crazy garage this weekend! hahaha

scraping oem plastic bumpers are one thing, scraping fiberglass aftermarket kit bumpers are another.
fiberglass aftermarket bumpers are more fragile and more prone to damage needing repair + repaint.

wow, i thought that i was at an all female school for a minute.
Ive starte putting metal plates at the bottom of all my aero. i dont care of i scrape anymore.
I gauge if im low enough by this
When i take a turn, if both my tire is rubbing the fender, AND the sideskirt is scraping. im low enough.

I love your attitude! i assume the plates ar riveted to the kit. does the kit crack where the metal meets fiberglass if u scrape too much? i am considering doing this when i get my kit

i have learned from drifting to do the following when you order a kit (when i ordered my kit, the day it came in, we literally were installing it taking the car to paint so i couldnt)
as SOOOOON as you get any kit do the following
Lay 4-5 layers of fiberglass at all mounting points.
lay the same amount along the entire lip, any sharp angles (more prone to crack at an endge f an angle) and the bottom of your skirts
rear bumper, just reinforce the mounting points, odds of scraping it, arent that high, i think i have like 4 times?
Once you do that, get hte LONG rivets, and as thick of sheetmetal as you can afford. and go to town.
I out them on the side of the bumper nad sideskirt facing the wheel, so it protects the bumper from rocks, dirt, dust from the road. as well as the entire underside of the skirts nad front lip.
I am actually going to have a guy i know make me a Carbon fiber front undertray and skirt trays not only for added downforce but for strength.
Only problem is, your mounting is the weak point. If you just pop in screws at the end, and on the door jambs, your going ot break stuff. My skirts have like 5 braces made from 1/8th inch aluminum that i had to use a hammer and a vice and heat to bend. they are rigid as hell.

u are adding the fiberglass onthe inside(non visible part) of the kit right?
P.S. how are u stil tearing your skirts in half if the whole bottom is riveted and covered in metal?

My insurance kit was riveted, but not glassed
Never broke a skirt, did pop off my rear bumper a couple times, but it was a super duper low bumper
and yes to the inside.

Say goodbye to your money.
Putting carbon fiber in the line of fire is like flushing money down the toilet.
It's strong for its weight, but it'll still crack, and you won't be able to fix it and make it look good like with glass.

I like how hardcore minitruckers are with their builds. Tearing down the trucks, highway dragging with no bed, really using the trucks and having fun with 'em.
this one is crazy for me ... i started building cars with bagged mini trucks back in the day. when you follow that scene there is a saying that goes .....IF YOU CANT DRAG IT ,YOUR A FAGIT!!!!! and since i follow the other saying of ''KNOW YOUR ROOTS''i guess it can still apply.
I like how hardcore minitruckers are with their builds. Tearing down the trucks, highway dragging with no bed, really using the trucks and having fun with 'em.

I usually do not care at all. You can't see under my car and I'm not trying to show off my undercarriage anyway...

I just say f*ck it. I like the looks from the person riding in my car and the looks I get from the person driving behind me.

I'm new to this forum, and the VIP scene. I just got done lowering my 2GS on Euroline SL's (20's) running low on HKS RS coils. I was rolling real low initially and scraping bad in my fenders and along the exhaust flanges and rear pan for the spare tire. I had to raise it up to where its barely tucked in the back and about 1/4 inch above the fender in front. I'm flush which is good, but want to go lower. Going to need to pull the fenders and maybe take a heat gun to the fender wells and push them up to make room for the tires when the coils compress.
All to say, I'm glad I found this thread and know that I'm not alone in the scraping arena. At first I was super apprehensive about it. Now that I raised it up, it makes me feel like I'm not as low anymore.
Basically, it seems worth it to me to scrape a lil and know that I'm riding "really low" then no scraping and just being "low."
The streets are terrible here in Dallas/Ft. Worth and especially where I live and work which is north of there. Well see where I end up, but again its nice to know that there are people who car relate!

Competition is a good motivator for me.
Whenever I see a Civc, or a Golf, or anything that's riding lower than me I'm like "damn, I need to beat that guy"
Anything they can do I can do better =)

I don't mind scraping, if it's a "good scrape." like your exhaust piping, or something that can get scraped up. If it's a bad scrape, like my front lip of something, I just think about how much it's going to cost to fix it..But it's a sacrifice that is well worth it too me.

The only time I was like " FUCK!" when I scraped, was over this GIANT speedbump, and i could feel my subframe hit, exhaust, and then frame rails hit...that one wasn't fun.

There's nothing I have to worry about on my car. Bottom of the rockers is the lowest part, and while they're pretty banged up in some places, at least it means my exhaust won't get dented. And my oilpan is nice and high up, the front sway bar can take the beating =)

My undercarriage looks like a polished wheels! LOL
Once I scrape so badly it sounds something like this...
Crrrrraaap (front lip scrapping), then silence (front wheel's up). then THUD! (Frame hitting). Then comes the long scrap all along the undercarriage (thank god it's a FWD) with a bit of wheelspin.
I'm not even as low as you guys... Talking about killer bumps ROFL

It's so funny that you post that because I am seriously considering mounting one of those on the Protege.

I scrape during normal driving cause of my busted ass front struts, but it's no biggie, it's just the tire rubbing the inner plastic. However every now and then I come accross a huge speed bump and the cats scrape and maybe some of the piping. It feels like I just scraped the flesh off my spine. :saiyancrunks:AWRGGHH!!! I haven't practiced the diagonal manuver too much since the old Nissan hardbody lowered with 15x8.5 full reverse McLeans and EG hatch days. Guess I need to practice that manuver more before I get coilovers.
Sorry for the threadjack Zion.....BTW can anyone get their hands on some new/used Y33 coilovers??? I don't want to have to have to pay shipping from Japan if someone has them in the U.S.
