starting issues

not sure if this is the right spot to post.  

well i bought this '92 q45 yesterday, it started up easy everytime. ran smooth and wat not. but this morning i go to start it and it won't stay on. it just vibrates then turns off. on the dash is says low battery, i jump started and even switchted the battery from my 240 into it, says same thing and dies, i try giving it gas and it dies. could both batteries just be way low on voltage? or might there be something else wrong? any help would be great.

could be your fuel pump.... you got enough gas in the tank? check the connection on the MAF.... hope this helps out a bit

it has less than half a tank of gas,  maf seems to be plugged in. it still strarts up everytime but it wont stay on too long

is it dying with the 240 still jumped? if so i'd say bad ground. if not connected then alternator or bad ground.

i would check electrical connections first, then start looking at the fuel system. maybe clean the egr?

Check your grounds and connections first. Hit them up with a steel brush. If that doesnt work then i have to say 90% of the time when it says Low Battery on the Q.... Its the alternator. I just changed mine. Its infamous on G50 Q45s. If your fuel pump was bad then it wouldn't start at all. Sometimes your FPCU(?) is bad but any fuel pump problems would not say batt low. check your voltage on your battery. Make sure that its consistent and it doesn't start to drain as the engine is running. Its a bitch to change the alternator. Dont change it from the top of the engine bay like the FSM says. Get it from the bottom. Every zip tie holding the wires in the back of the alternator, make sure they are cut. The alternator is in there and really hard to get out. Be sure to lower the AC compressor as it gives you more room. Good luck.....


BTW: does your other lights come on? TCS BRAKES etc???

i just had the battery charged at NAPA cuz they said it was a lil low, but still does the same thing. i disconnected the maf too and does the same with it disconnected

and yea all the lil lights turn on

does it take a while for it to start up, like itll crank, crank, crank then start? or does it start right up then die? does it crank strong like as if it were a new battery? 

do one thing at a time, and get a good, reliable battery.... imo

it starts right up like a new car, and sometimes it idles perfect for like 10 seconds then slowly dies

disconnect the connector on the MAF and try to start it up... see if it does exactly the same thing.

it's not the battery or the MAF.  if the car starts up, it has nothing to do with the battery because starting is the only thing the battery effects.  all electricity in the car is run by the alternator after the car has started.  it's possible your alternator is messed up, or you just need some gas or possibly a new fuel pump.  it wouldn't be the MAF because the car would stay on even if the MAF was messed up, it just wouldnt rev above 2000rpm or so.  i say check the amperage and voltage coming out of your alternator, just be careful!  other than that i don't know what it would be.  im betting on alternator!

problem solved, got it fixed last night at work. it was the fuel pump it just didn't have enough pressure. so the guy there that was helpin me out just rigged up a titan pump and it works now. he told me to drive it around the block. it was a lil hesitant. but when i came back he said the car was giving off a smell of bad old gas. thats wat probably made the other pump go out. so i went and filled her up with 91 chevron gas. but need a permit to drive it more to burn the old gas.
