Cool English/Japanese dictionary

Thought I would share this with you all considering we do a lot of Japanese related stuff here at VSC.com. By the way, yes, VIP is actually BIPPU. Have fun...

No, it's not.  And the Japanese will tell you as well themselves.  There is no such thing as "bippu".  That's like saying you like to go "dorifto".  You just don't say that.  You say "drift".  Rōmaji is not direct translation of something..it's a Romanized pronunciation of non-japanese words.  Vip is still "vip"...

I prefer to use Jim Breen's dictionary when translating, however it wont be much use if you dont have a basic grasp of Japanese. For people studying Japanese its awesome

I always thought bippu was the pronounciation of how they would read the 3 letter word VIP.  Okay, I guess not.

As long as the u is pretty much silent then yes, you are close to the mark.Japanese *can* say 'V' but it sounds somewat strained and definitely not natural (there are no V sounds in Japanese. It almost always sounds like VW when they say it (i.e. Vwip), and hence its easier for them to say B instead
 
So when they say vip, most tend to say bipp with a microsecond of a "u" on the end

A few japanese people have asked me what i did with my stagea when i was driving it. I told them drift, and i got a nani desu ka? and the black stare
 
Then i said dorifuto and they did the AHHHH sosososososososososo bullshit
 
i think  its more region based than japan based. But here on the good old kanto plane, it is known as the above.

:slap: ...I'm talking about when WE say it.  Hahahaha!  You stated exactly what I said, but I reversed it to English.  Meaning..in the usa we say "vip" and we say "drift"...get it?

ok so then i have a question where the hell did this whole bippu thing come from and what is it exactly there seems to be alot of damn confusion around this word and now i dont get  what the hell is going on lol

I dont know but i think i may have had something to do with that (I am not saying that to brag, its kind of embarrassing - if i am wrong then that would be a GOOD thing)

The word "BIPPU" comes from a literal Katakana to Romaji conversion of the word ビップ which is how the Japanese write VIP (like on the covers of vipstyle or vipcar magazine).

The actuall characters are:

ビ - BI
ッ - (indicates next consonant is double)
プ - PU

Put it together and you have BIPPU. However the first time i explained this i didnt realise people would start saying it with all letters pronounced. In Japan, U's are almost silent, so when they say ビップ, they actually say it as BIPP. Recently Elpresidente informed me that Americans are now saying it as BIPPOOO, which sounds completely wrong and makes me regret ever translating the characters

And before ElPres jumps in again, there is another way of writing vip: ヴィップ.　The character ヴ is now commonly used for V sounds. When this is read out though, Japanese people tend to say it as VWIPP.

In the end i think its best if us westerners just stick to saying vip, which rhymes with whip.
