general public using the term "Gangsta" on VIP style cars

I've had a few of my friends and co-workers use the term "gangster" when describing my car. Now keep in mind these are just normal people who have no idea what VIP is all about. 

I'd understand if someone who was already familiar with VIP style using the term "gangster", but to have a total "outsider"  naturally use the term "gangster" to describe a japanese big body sedan is very very interesting IMO. 

It almost makes me believe VIP style can be a valid, identifiable style equivalent to that of DUB here in the USA, capable of generating as much money equivalent to that of DUB for the automotive aftermarket industry.

anyone else experience this

I've gotten the gangster comment, or "we thought you guys were the mafia when you rolled up", but by far my favorite is a friends girlfriend said  "it looks like a killers car"  lol .  I said, well, I [i]like[/i] The Killers....

Oh I have had the gangster car come up plenty more than once.  I was in the process of having some tenants removed from a rental and when I pulled up a couple of the cops pulled their guns....  hahaha. It was a known meth lab though...

I've gotten it a few times, but then again I drive my car through the ghetto sometimes. "That shit is so gangsta."

People usually look for the Triad symbol on the back of my car lol

I use the word "gangsta" all the time when describing people's vehicles.

.....and in these ghettos they see a laid-back 8 ft tall Asian man hop out and they asume he's Yakuza, not knowing he's actually Filipino, and thats why they are calling him a Gangster too.

i think ppl relate big body sedans with big wheels and gangsta. its just the way things are. you dont hear ppl call a civic hatch with 15s gang*...at least i never have and ive been into hondas for a long time.  i get "gang*" pretty often, but then again my car is black, which IMO is more gang* than other colors :p

I don't even have wheels and people think my car is the sketchiest thing they've ever seen.  

They say they expect me to come out with my guns up haha

Yeah I've seen people's car be called gangster, on this forum a lot. It's retarded really. People are going to assume it's true, and cops are going to pull people over...I remember Mikey from exec konnection talking about cops pulling him over a lot. 
 
I got pull over a while back when I had my rims on...creeped through a stop, cop pulled me over, said I ran the stop, but then proceeded with just a warning. 
 
I've run questionable red lights, in FRONT of cops, and not been pulled over. 
 
It's the look. If a car looks like it is, then people are probably going to assume it's a gangster's car. 
 
I'd rather get pulled over doing nothing and have the cop not be able to ticket me, or rather, when he goes to give me a BS ticket about I'm too low, pop the car up on air and laugh. It's not a big deal really.
 
Gangster will =vip. vip=jdm. jdm=bippu. People will start calling EVERYTHING that's a lexus or infiniti with 'bippu' parts bippu or vip now...bippu is the new jdm.
 
 
If you are thinking of this as a money making scheme...it's not. Calling something 'gangster' just like calling it 'dub' is not going to make the money. 
 
This is still a niche crowd, and it won't blow up until cars and parts get a lot cheaper. Just like drifting...once people started bringing in parts, and knock offs, it blew up like an A-bomb, just like the honda scene did, all because it got cheaper to play. 
 
In this scene you still have to pay to play. That's the way it needs to stay. NO KNOCKOFFS AND INDUSTRIALIZED SHITBOX PARTS JUST TO MAKE SOME CHANGE OFF THIS SCENE.
 
It needs to be kept as a niche style, something that people will jock, and not be emulated on everything...

How did JDM do it. How did ricer come about, how did many words that are now slang for car terms get coined? The internet. People will equate vip being gangster. Since vip has been coined 'bippu' they will call it that. Bippu is the new JDM. Trust me, it is. JDM is/was thrown around SO MUCH that it is now considered 'rice' by many people, look at Honda-tech for reference. 
 
It's just a prediction, but where there is smoke there is fire. Fire being this style burned to shit by people knocking off wheels, kits, accessories etc. It will happen. It's America. The land of misrepresentation, the land of 'jdm' the land of car trends that get washed out by misinformation from the media. Uneducated people will follow what the magazines say. 
 
Have you seen the articles about 'vip style' and 'auto luxury' when they pop up? They are SO misinformed when you read them, it's ridiculous. The blind leading the blind. 
 
Gangster, in this sense, is coined from the internet, meaning 'cool'. Just another way of saying it. Due to that, people will HAVE to find out how to associate it. By that, they will search the internet. In searching the internet by googling 'gangster LS400, GS300' etc. they will come across some other person using the same terminology. By that, someone else will give the correct name of the style of tuning we  know as VIP style. They will join this site, and talk about how cool and gangster these cars look. They will see the word 'bippu'. They will think that is the Japanese word for vip. Since taking words from a direct kanji translation and saying it how it was written  in that translation, they will know it's 'jdm' and the 'right way' to call a vip car that looks 'gangster' is to call it a bippu car.  Since they will call it a 'bippu' car, and 'bippu' style, the media will catch on from uninformed persons. The media will start calling it that. People will start asking questions on where to get these parts for these cars. The media will tell them. Since it's good business, companies will catch on to this new trend sparking, and will in turn, start taking parts that are strictly japan items, bring 1 or 2 of them in, and start copying them and mass producing them with inferior quality, and adapting thse same parts for other cars. Once this happens, prices will be driven down, and more and more people will catch on as cars get cheaper. The market will get flooded with knockoffs, and people, who just want to be up on the next trend, will keep buying these knockoffs and faking the funk. This funk will get called out on this forum, as most people here don't appreciate knockoffs. Some people say it's not that big of a deal, others, including management think that the copying should stop, which has already started. This, is what will happen in the future. Just watch. If you don't believe me now, you will in the future, unless we can keep this from happening. I know it seems a bit far fetched, all stemming from someone calling our cars 'gangster', but really look at what has happened to the main trends of japanese cars, from honda's to 'drifting' to now vip cars....many people have gone through these trends in that order. It's the American way.

We refer to lots of cars that way where im from.  Dont think it has anything to do with VIP.  They used the phrase when I had my Giovanna Dubs on and they still do.  But I agree, it cant be used on a civic, has to be a big body like a Cadillac, Benz or a truck

And I get sweated by one-time alot.... and alot of cholo's jock my ride....they think it the old ss impala...lol I also switch on fools at stop lights and in the neighborhood.... We're not the ones who are putting that idea in their heads, that's just the way people see it. Not necessarily a bad thing.

To me it means far more than just "cool".  It's like putting something on a pedestal.

i think the word is used very loosely in american society today. it has become a common adjective that many people use.


you can use it to describe any item, to a persons look, or how some carries themselve.

nowadays everyone says "gangsta" on big body cars and SUVs on rims.. it's just another word of saying your ride is sick. I always get that from the youmg crowd but the older folks really jock on the ride saying it's a clean car. shit I don't mind people say my ride is gangsta =)

You guys do have valid points. This however, stood out to me. Sounds like someone is trying to cash in on the next 'trend'. 

Another point that should be brought up. The 'DUB' crowd, usually doesn't buy DUB rims, but cheap Taiwan/Chinese made rims that cost $1500 with tires. 

This is why I went off on a rant mostly. Because the same type of crowd associates our cars with 'gangster'. The same type of crowd, who buys knockoff rims, in the 'import scene' are either the uneducated 'ricers', or the ones who jock the style, but cannot afford, or think that knockoffs are 'good enough' as the real stuff. Get where I'm going with this? It's the people who aren't 'in the know' who mess up the style. I'm just associating this with the same people who use the terminology of our cars being 'gangster'. Like Qclass said, he generally gets it from people who don't know about vip style.

Lots of folks on here I take it are from the suburbs and what not and are in to the VIP style but not really the "VIP style"..if you catch my drift....Its a ballers (hustlers) world this VIP gig  and not a daddy bought me this world..or I am using mommys car world.....thats probably why some of you dont understand the difference between Gangster and Gaannggssstaaa...

i'm assuming the people the op referred to calling his car gangster were not saying his car looks "cool", they were saying it looks "gang related". i.e. the real definition of gangster.

its not so much slang as misuse of the word. the thing with gangster is because of its true meaning misuse is stupid. being a gangster has been pumped up to be cool, so now something that is cool is "gangster". the truth of the matter is that there isn't much cool about being a gangster. nobody should strive to rob, hustle, bang, kill, etc. but everybody wants to be a "g" or "keep it gangster". focus more on "keeping it real" and think about what you are saying.
 
on a side note i have lived that life to an extent and there was a time that all that stuff was cool to me, but once you live it and move on everything looks different and you see it for what it really is.

I can really careless what the true meaning of "gangster" is. I use it the way i do and will continue to use it the way i do as describing something that has caught my eye. Not necessarily meaning that i am using it in a gang related sense. People are so hung up on keeping the word "gangster" as a negative term that we tend to forget we are using it in a slang sense. Some people may see it in a negative sense and some may not. 

So from BlackonBlack98's point, GANGSTER DOES NOT = COOL but using the word "Gangsta" to describe something can equal cool.

Myself as well as other's I've talked to, don't want to get this VIP thing mixed up with other stylistic categories. don't take it so personal. Many of us got into VIP to stray away from other trendy styles.

and what I do is more of a hobby and far from what I do as my full time career.

now back to the original topic: depending on who was saying it it could be taken differently. to a young hip person i would take it as "cool" (as demonstrated) but from an older or higher-class person i would take it more literally. i.e. it looks like a car a gangster would drive

EVERYONE stereotypes...real world.    These days Cholo doesn't necessarily have to be Mexican.  This is my opinion.   I think cholo is a lifestyle.  A thug lifestyle and the dress code comes from that lifestyle.   I see alot of white/asian in LA that dress cholo style.    Usually the cholo style is in the more poverty and low income areas where there are plenty of swapmeets that sell the cholo wear.   I used to go to these to look for certain items. I beg to differ on that one.... anyone can LOOK or DRESS like a Cholo but a real Cholo is known from his nationality... and that's Mexican. You never hear theterm "Asian Cholo" or "White Cholo"... because they don't exist. Gangbangers on the other hand you do hear as well as gang member and gangster... but you are correct when you say that gangsta is the same wayas "wicked" or "bad" in a good way! :biggthumpup:
