Flares?

which flares do you VIP'ians like more? Personally, i like the subtle ness of the flare that goes into the door...

Forum image

disreguard the wheels...just look at the overall flow of the car....

or do you like the flare that is only on the quarters?

i don't really care for the ski slope...some cars can pull it off like dark colors...but on white, i like the flow into the doors...

It really depends on the application. Both ways can look OEM if done right. Personally, I like it best when the flare stretches onto the door but not as far as the door handle.

flares on the quarter panels more than flares that goes into the door. Sometimes the flares on the door looks so flared out, that it just looks straight up silly. Especially when you look at it from the rear.

There's a green GS in the november or december issue of vipcar (the GS edition) and he's got these flares that just rap around the wheel arches.....it's PERFECT IMO. I'll see if I can get a scan of it.

i didn't flare the entire door but the body work will start just under the door handle...flaring the entire door is out of my leauge...maybe in a few years...haha

but this is how mine looks now...

(i know, i know, old pic)

i think it's an overall good flare...i like the position it's in relation to the quarter and door...

anyone got good shots of other flared rides...

Depends. Between the first two examples, I much prefer the small flare on the quarter, the big stretched quarter panel look doesn't do it for me.

Lack of dish might contribute to that.

For me it depends on how wide the rim and or pull you do!
IMO- on s minor pull I say the first is okay but when you go w/ a really wide rim like a 12 + it looks funny to me!
I say the 2nd for me!!!!!

But my fav is where the do th wide wody that extends the whole quater panel and makes it look flush still......I see if I can find a example:
Wait I take that back! LOL!
I LOVE THIS CAR! :runcoold: :runcoold: and it's showing your first selection!

I designed this...

I guess this is a telltale of my Flare flavor...
Forum image

For VIP, i like the wheels being accentuated by the flares...but it really depends on the car...square cars look better with the bulges while more slender cars work better with swooping edges. Bigger the car, smaller the flares should be. But that's just me.

Very nice Dennis. Thats the furthest I would go personally. Anything past that looks out of place on most cars.

Does anyone have a pic of that second gen GS that had the complete rear door flared out?

This was my old setup. I felt the back sat too high and didnt like the fact that F50 rear fenders sit much lower then the front fenders
Forum image

So I had them cut. Also had them add alittle flare at the end to make it look more Euro. All the work is all metal, no glass.

I love the ones in the doors .. so much respect to the body shop ... If you can pull it off correctly .. either way looks great on the cars ... as long as it flows ..

i actually like the flares on your old set up...but i know you get some of your styling cues from euros...i'm not much of a euro person at all...haha...

so how exactly did they do the rear flare? did they cut the arch, then weld the metal 'flare' part? or did they cut in sections, hammer/dollied the lip, then fill the gaps with welds? i'm just interested in how other people did theirs...there's tons of different ways to do...i think i took the looong road...

I loved my old setup but when slammed, the rear was heigher then the front, you could tell by the side skirts in some pics. Now, once I adjust my sus, I could get the side skirts to lay on the ground with no kit (had to go down to 18's to do that though)
This is the best pic I have that shows what I mean about the rear being alittle heigher then the front
Forum image
Of coarse I could tuck and not have that problem but im aiming for flush and slammed on stock body

They cut the arch then used a hammer and dolly to get the flare part up. They did alot of work to my inner fenders too. They did alot of cutting so the only rubbing I will ever have would be caused by the outer fender and not the inner.

maybe the 1st car i posted was a bad example of what i was talking about...they body worked the flare all the way into the rear quarter to help blend with that crazy wing...

in this pic, the flare it self looks decent but looks horrible when not blended in the bumper...

Forum image

this isn't too bad but i think the body needs to be faded more higher...looks too much of a slope and looks too much like a flare

Forum image

check out the car in the background

Forum image

this is just too much
Forum image

and this is actually ideal (particularly the top left corner) depending what rims you want to fit...

yeah, the body work is amazing on that car (was just a poor example/angle of what i was talking about)...mostly because it appears stock...please tell me you have more pics of that car...i'd like to see how they worked the radiused flare into the dog leg...to me, it looks as if they cut the body line in half or made no body line at all like the LS's are...of all VIP cars to puts flares on, the ucf1x and 2x are the easiest...no body lines to worry about...just a rolled lip at the edge...i think the y33's are the hardest...it's got almost a 2" body line along the the radius of the flare that goes all the way down to the dogleg...

for an example (LS'), no body line

If the rear fenders were even in height front and back like the Y33, I would of kept it that way.

They did the actual cutting and metal work the day after thanksgiving and I wasnt around to take pics. I was pissed because I was going to the shop every day to take pics and I missed the part I really wanted to see.

Real VIP is all about details and to me, that line makes a huge difference. Makes the fenders look more complete.

Wasnt that the look that you were trying to replicate when you used BMW fenders?

Real VIP is all about details and to me, that line makes a huge difference. Makes the fenders look more complete.

Wasnt that the look that you were trying to replicate when you used BMW fenders?

not really...i was trying to get a good foundation on which to build from...i was going to use Z4 fender because they have even bigger body lines than the q but getting my hands on 2 fender was nearly impossible...i had 1 ready to go but i just wanted something to tac on already so i decided to use the 3 series...got too anxious...the body line is easy to make but will need to be shaped out of bondo...i was trying get the shape of the fenders as close as possilble out of metal so i use less body filler

i want to keep that body line just the height it is now...

the tricky part is to do the same in the front...i'm cheating a little because i don't want to do a full flare in the front...i'm going to hammer and dolly the stock line out to match the 3 series...it's give me a pull/wide fender look without the cutting and welding...hard to explain...make sense?
