My car is finally going to the body shop, headlight question's.

So I finally found some black housing headlights, refurbished. So I figure I will put in new bulbs. But I am a bulb noob.

I searched and found Pancakes car. Now I liked how it looked with 10k in the headlights and 12k in the fogs albeit pictures don't show how they really are in real life. I am looking for something that will really stand out from everybody else on the road. But I don't have any experiance with HID bulbs.

So what do I want? Shielded? unshielded? Where is the best place to buy? Best brand?

I appreciate any help you can give me.

Thanks.
Dom.

Thanks Kev!

You got it backwords homie!
I have 12K headlights & 10K fogs

My headlights are non-sheild (you want shield! Trust me)
Mine being non-sheild is the reason there so bright!
And they defintly stand out!

Pink is a color that stands out from the rest as well as purple but your increasing your chances of getting pulled over by a grip!

Personally I want to run 8K all around! I like that blue! Look at zion's HIDs for a example...
He's running 6K up top & 8K below

*Hit up BigSteve or AFL430 (Auto Fashion) If intrested in buying some lights! Their kits are the easiest to install!

You while your at it you should clear your headlights! (This is something I want to do...)

Black housing, so they are HID right? These are lights you are talking about here. Just remember, the higher kelvins you go, the lower output you'll have. You get purple, you won't be able to see very much. When it rains, the higher kelvin lights will wash out on the road, leaving you blind. Darker lights will fatigue your eyes during long drives...just a word or warning.

I'd stick with 5-6k, that's just me though. Also, different companies lights will not be the same as others, just something to keep in mind.

This is true! But my 12K aren't that bad! But my fogs do light up more even thoigh there not for function! I haven't been in Bigsteve's ride to see his pinks while driving but I would assume that the out put isn't very good......

And it is way worse when it rains or fog!
Oh welll! Jus another thing that isn't for function...

Do the unshielded bulbs light up the road better? From what I can gather I would want to go 8K unshielded headlights and fogs.

I already have the HID's, hence the black housing, so all I would need is the bulbs, not a kit? Also would I just get the same bulbs for both headlights and fog lights?

Yea it'll be worse if you don't get the shield because the light will be scattered instead of focused on the road more! This also creates brighter blinding light out put!

Will they look like that with the black housing headlights? I know he has the chrome regular headlights, I assume that would brighten them up.

Also, the fogs are just halogen bulbs right?

Yea, just go with oem numbers like 4000K-4300K for road visibility. Any higher K will begin to glare to other drivers even if they are shielded.

The truth about HID:
If you're actually concerned about improving lighting performance, not reducing it,
-non-HID housing = fail
-over 5k = fail

Otherwise it's just for looks, do whatever you want, it's going to be sub-par lighting anyways. I recommend shielded to cut down on glare so at least you don't offend other drivers. Brand shouldn't really be a big deal, most brands are all made at the same few factories.

I think I will wait for a little before I get the HID kit for the fog lights. I don't want to go over my budget before paint!
Or would it be easier to install the kit when the bumper is off?

Then all I need to decide is what comes first...... air or wheels?

No problem mayng. They should look the same because the allthough its black housing it still has the mirror reflector surrounding the lights.

As far as visibility goes..I have pulled up to many BMW and AUDI's and my lights wash there lights out. 8000k is perfect for non projector housings. IF you go 4300-5000k you will not get the nice looking color. IT will be white without the blueis purple hue. IF I had projectors I would probably go with 5000k but since I dont I like the color and I have not problem seeing the road at night.

With those headlights maybe, but it depends on the reflector - what kind of cutoff you'll have.

wrong.

u are giving out wrong information to people who are looking for HID's.

non hid housings need HID's with glare shields. It works wonders. It won't have that sharp cut off like u get with oem hid housings, but it beats stock halogen's big time.

Yeah sure it's cool for you, I'm not going to get into an HID/non-HID debate though.

I do agree that lighting up EVERYTHING in front of you is good for you, because hey, you can see everything right?

I don't like how EVERYBODY and their mother grabs an HID kit, throw it in their non HID housing, and then blind the crap outta people.

Even if you are not staring at the light, driving down a dark road, with no street lamps, and someone with an HID kit like above comes slamming by, you'll get blinded pretty bad. It's not him driving by that's going to affect you. It's the aftermath of right when he passes you, and everything goes black for a split second, where you can't see ANYTHING because your eyes have to adjust to the darkness again. In that split second anything can happen, from an animal running out in front of you, to a crack head, to another car pulling out in front of you.

This guy is doing it right by at least having the HID housings. Don't get unshielded bulbs, as that will throw off the beam pattern.

Besides, do you need to light up the sky? Or the road?

I PM'ed AFLS430 and he said that AF have Xenon Vision D2C. Also stated it is a universal bulb for D2R and D2S. How can it be a bulb for both shielded and non shielded?

Or am I an idiot and completely missing something here?

Also my Q is the Touring, so it came standard with the HID's. I am not swapping over to them if anyone is thinking that is what I am doing. I am simply buying a refurbished set to replace my smashed up ones.

For the record, all shielded HID kits in reflector housings do is physically block the part that would be glare. You will still have hot spots in the wrong places, and the cutoff will merely be an approximation.

Rich, factory HID is bright, but they have a superb cutoff, and proper light distribution below it.

It won't light up the sky! If it's a touring model (which it is) The lights have a motor where you can adjust the height of the lights!!!! SO you can point the lights low or high! I believe there's 4 settings it can adjust to! =)

I forget which one it is but there's a difference between D2R & D2S!
One has the shield and one dosen't! It tells you which one you need (The shielded one) on the head lamp it's self! Look on the outside on the bottom of driving lense! Somewhere in the lense it says D2R or D2S! I believe it's D2S!!

Also When I bought my headlight bulbs through another company they sent me the wrong ones!
I have the D2C that Freddie is talkin about and to clarify they ARE universal fit (meaning they will fit) but it's NON (NO) shielded!!!!! YOU WANT shielded!!!!

The D2R and the shielded ones. I was just wondering about the C's.

Now are the D2's direct replacement for the factory Xenon hedlights? Or are they the H1 or H3's?

D2 are factory HID, and they're D2, not H1 or H3.

There's no such thing as a universal bulb without modification to the housing.

When he asked for Xenon Vision bulbs I simply told him that they carry the D2C which is their universal bulb and fits with any D2 housing that we have put it on so far and plugs right in. Thats why I told you that. I didnt say it had the shield so dont get my words mixed up. Only reason i told you that is because this is what they carry and if you didnt want it then they dont have what you want.

OKAY GUYS!

D2 = Stock HID

D2R = Shielded

D2S = Non shielded

For the halogen/Non-HID housing they use all the H1, 2, 3, 4, etc..... *Hint The letter "H" for Halogen!

So many valid points in this thread and some misinformation. First of all, those of you who choose to run higher kelvin bulbs than oem, please keep in mind your hids are going to glare at oncoming traffic even if you have razor sharp cutoff in projector housings, its the color that still causes glare. D2R bulbs are for oem hid non-projector reflector housings and D2S are for oem hid projector housings. Obviously, your not supposed to stare at anyone's headlights, even if they are halogens, but the color of hids strain oncoming traffic's eyes as well as the hids owner's eyes, but the owners are too oblivious to the facts of higher hid kelvin and its effects. No one is hating on anyone in this thread, but I will say that ricers are known to have higher kelvin bulbs. Do it for you, but in my book, it looks gay, especially when it glares.
