New L.A. Times Article about 2Pac and Puffy this morning...

Newly discovered information, including interviews with people who were at the studio that night, lends credence to Shakur's insistence that associates of rap impresario [URL="http://topics.latimes.com/entertainment/people/sean-john-combs"][U][COLOR=#0000ff]Sean "Diddy" Combs[/COLOR][/U][/URL] were behind the assault. Their alleged motives: to punish Shakur for disrespecting them and rejecting their business overtures and, not incidentally, to curry favor with [URL="http://www.newsday.com/entertainment/music/ny-ettupac0318,0,1984674.story"][U][COLOR=#0000ff]Combs.[/COLOR][/U][/URL]

The information focuses on two New York hip-hop figures -- talent manager James "Jimmy Henchman" Rosemond and promoter James Sabatino, who is now in prison for unrelated crimes.

FBI records obtained recently by The Times say that a confidential informant told authorities in 2002 that Rosemond and Sabatino "set up the rapper Tupac Shakur to get shot at Quad Studios." The informant said Sabatino had told him that Shakur "had to be dealt with."

The records -- summaries of FBI interviews with the informant conducted in July and December 2002 -- provide details of how Shakur was lured to the studio and ambushed. Others with knowledge of the incident corroborated the informant's account in interviews with The Times and gave additional details.

According to this information, Rosemond and Sabatino, infuriated by what they saw as Shakur's insolent behavior, enticed him to the Quad by offering him $7,000 to provide a vocal track for a rap recording.

Three assailants -- reputedly friends of Rosemond -- were lying in wait. They were on orders to beat Shakur but not kill him and to make the incident look like a robbery, the sources said. They were told they could keep whatever jewelry or other valuables they could steal from Shakur and his entourage.

A member of Shakur's posse cooperated with the rapper's enemies, relaying their offer of a $7,000 payment and keeping them informed of his whereabouts on the night of the assault, according to the informant and the other sources.

Rosemond, who has served prison time for drug dealing and weapons offenses, has been described by Vibe magazine as "one of the most respected and feared players in hip-hop." His Czar Entertainment represents rappers Shyne, Too Short, Gucci Mane and the Game.

Rosemond has long denied any role in the Quad incident. He declined to be interviewed for this article, but his lawyer, Jeffrey Lichtman, dismissed the new information as "ancient double-hearsay allegations."

Lichtman noted that Rosemond had never been charged or questioned in connection with the attack -- a sign, Lichtman said, that federal authorities have "discounted" what the informant told them. Rosemond "was not involved in the assault and will not be prosecuted for it," Lichtman said.

[B]L.A. Times Writer Chuck Philips Talks About Diddy and Jimmy Rosemond's Responses To His Article [/B]

[B]Posted March 17, 2008 --[/B] Despite the statements released by Sean "Diddy" Combs and Jimmy "Henchmen" Rosemond,[I] L.A. Times[/I] writer Chuck Philips isn't takin' back anything he said in his controversial article which was published earlier today (Mar. 17). The article implicated Jimmy Rosemond and friends of Sean "Diddy" Combs in the yet to be solved 1994 shooting of Tupac Shakur at New York's Quad Studios.

"I try to go and find people who are directly involved or know people who are involved in the actual crime," says Philips. "I work the same as police do except I’m not a cop so people are not afraid to talk to me because I’m not going to arrest them," he adds. 
Not long after the article had surfacedDiddy released the following statement: 
 
[I]"This story is beyond ridiculous and is completely false. Neither Biggie nor I had any knowledge of any attack before, during, or after it happened. It is a complete lie to suggest that there was any involvement by Biggie or myself. I am shocked that the Los Angeles Times would be so irresponsible as to publish such a baseless and completely untrue story.”[/I]
 
 
Philips said he reached out to Diddy while writing the story, which he had been working on for 6 months. "Puffy chose not to talk," says Philips. "I offered him the opportunity to comment twice. He knew what the story was going to say. He decided not to comment." But, according to the article, Diddy had no involvement in the shooting, outside of knowing about it. Jimmy Rosemond, on the other hand, did, says Philips' article as well as the FBI report that he printed alongside it. "He refused to talk to me," Philips says of Rosemond. "So we printed what his lawyer said." 
Rosemond, CEO of CZAR Entertainment--the company that manages Game, Gucci Mane, and others, responded in a statement of his own: 
 
“In the past 14 years, I have not even been questioned by law enforcement with regard to the assault of Tupac Shakur, let alone brought up on charges," he said, before making some accusations of his own. "Chuck Philips, the writer who in the past has falsely claimed that the Notorious Biggie Smalls was in Las Vegas when Tupac was murdered and that Biggie supplied the gun that killed Tupac — only to be proven wrong as Biggie was in New Jersey recuperating from a car accident, has reached a new low by employing fourth-hand information from desperate jailhouse informants along with ancient FBI reports to create this fabrication." 
 
Philips says that the man who now calls himself "James Rosemond" has his facts wrong. "Read his statement and go look at when Biggie got in the car accident. He’s putting false information out there. Biggie didn’t get into the accident, until after Tupac was killed in Las Vegas." 
The article has opened up some old wounds in the hip-hop community, and Chuck Philips knows that he's dibbling and dabbling in and around some sensitive topics. But that won't stop him from doing the work that he does, as the writer is working on another story about the murder of the Notorious B.I.G. 
 
[I]So does he ever feel threatened by any of this?[/I] He responds, "There have been times when that happens. I deal with a lot of criminals in my work and I treat them with respect and I’m very secret about the information I gather from individuals and anybody that I work with. There are some dangerous people who I work with, but their information is safe with me."

I just feel bad that both cases have yet to been solved....And they wonder why people of color tend to not trust the police and legal system. 
 
Its no secret that im a huge Pac fan, I talk with some of his friends that still hurt (bad) over it.  His body of work (released and unreleased) is amazing...Biggie was good but jus not on the same level.  
 
I hope that it wasnt involving Suge. I like that guy. I also hope its not the so-called coastal Beef with Big and Puffy. 
 
I hope it was that one guy acting alone, so the family (and fans) will have closure.

I agree! I could listen to pacs interviews and listen to him speak all day long! He's so powerful in his words! He'll really make you think about the way of life and how you chose tho live it!
PAC could sell water to a whale and make you believe it's more than what it is!
 
Real talk though! I'm a fan of both Pac & Biggie!
I liked Biggie for his story telling and the way he delivered
and Pac for his words, flow and passion of how he spit!

You should watch that dvd then Em, it's got a lot of information in it...brings a whole new perspective to it. 

It also talks about how Suge kept Pac down, by his 1.4 mil debt owed to Suge. How Suge would not pay Pac his money, but instead, bought the house he wanted for him, bought his cars for him, and 'managed his money' for him. 

It's a pretty twisted story, but then again, it's all speculation, but some of it coming from Pac's bodyguards, who were taken off Pac, because they refused to not carry their weapons with them that night Pac was killed.

Yea I've seen that DVD and it is a good story/documentry but you have to keep a open mind when watching/reading all this info.! I still believe it's some sort of conspiracy and like most things the thruth can be w/ held and folks could say whatever to try and make you believe what they want!

I did always find it funny how nobody really knew him until Biggie dided but we'll see....

puffy had pac killed and then set up big. diddy wanted to be the star. im sure it ate him up when suge called him out at the mtv awards or whatever awards that was.

Editors at the Los Angeles Times newspaper have apologized after an internal probe of documents used in a recent story on Tupac Shakur’s 1994 shooting proved the reports to be fakes. Writer Chuck Phillips received criticism from record label head Sean “Diddy” Combs after the article was published, suggesting that Combs knew of plans to attack rapper Shakur in 1994, two years before Shakur’s murder. The high-profile incident at New York’s Quad Recording Studios left Shakur briefly hospitalized, but it added to his legend as a tragic and defiant rap star. The Times wrote that Shakur was set up by Combs associates who wanted to send Shakur a message about perceived disses against Combs and his music label. The paper’s editor, Russ Stanton, says he ordered a review of the story after the investigative Web site The Smoking Gun suggested that FBI documents named as a source of information appear phony. “The bottom line is that the documents we relied on should not have been used,” Stanton says. Even Phillips, who initially defended his reporting, says he “got duped.” Combs has denied any connection to Shakur’s robbery and shooting.

Was reading an article the other day where he (Puffy) cancelled a trip to LA out of fear for himself and his people not wanting to 'take any chances" because of all this
