ive had att/cingular for the past 5 yrs and love it.  I dont know any of thier new plans, but thier service is great.  Never had a dropped call, or out of service area.

I love my Iphone, I was extremely weary about going to AT&T from T-mobile but now I couldn't be happier!

Im Using T-Mobile Since It Is GSM Band. Use To Have Cingular But Had Issues With Their Service Especially The Text Plan. You Can Hack The Iphone For T-Mobile :p. But I Got The LG Prada Over The Iphone. T-Mobile Has A Lot Of Good Deals. I Like The Blackberry Pearl Phone :]. Theres Many New Phones Out There. Main Ones I Been Lookin Over Is The Nokia N95, Nokia N93, Iphone, The New LG Prada On AT&T Network Soon. So You Have Many Choices. :] Happy Searching

gsm ftw.  get yourself a sim card and go shopping for unlocked phones on ebay.  samsung/sony ericson/nokia are the way to go.  all have awesome camera's and great features.

I've had my share of high end pda's and j-phones (Yokotas13 knows this first hand), but my Ocean is by far my favorite yet.  It does everything I need and hasn't crapped on me yet.  No worries about screens ceasing to function or getting dead lines, no crappy feedback buttons, it has dual slide capability for ease of use throughout it's range of programs and apps.  3rd party apps is a huge bonus..and games galore to head off boredom.  You can customize it in all sorts of ways and it is the cats meow when it comes to keeping in touch online and on the go with several options.  The GPS has been super accurate and there's even other apps which utilize the GPS capabilities.  So yah...I love it.

I got verizon, The phone selection does blow i must say, but i have the LG EnV it is the best phone i have ever used. It doesnt have all the online browsing that the other phones have, but its a great phone.

If i could, i would get the helio Ocean :giggity: that phone is soo awesome

I've had all the SideKicks ever since the first one came out w/ the funkey greenish/grey screen! 
And I've loved them all up until now! I know want a phone that can do what the SDK can but also w/ video! If the SDK had video than I would be satisfied but since they have decied to keep upgrading w/o Vid I'm almost forced to upgrade to a new phone! I LOVE T-mobile and there plans! + there customer service is on point!!! So I'll probably be staying w/ them and looking for a hacked phone! 
Possibly the I-phone! :smiley:  (Even though folks try to convince me against it!:pat: )
I want to look into the Helio Ocean that people are hyping up but I don't like the exterior look of the phone! We'll see!

I get free verizon service through my company, and love my Palm Treo for all its work purposes.  The New samsung i760 slider PDA(verizon exculsive)(also labeled as an "Iphone killer") is going to be available the 9th of november and i will be buying one.

I'm not happy with the window's mobile OS...I don't know if my phone is just getting old, but like my uncle predicted, it locks up every once in a while. 

If only the verizon internet plan was cheaper, 50 a month JUST for internet is too much...maybe if it was only 20 a month i'd be down.

How much are the Helio plans?

Iphone owns all. I was with Verizon using a Motorola Q and I decided to just end my 2-year contract about a year into it and pay the early termination fee. I was paying about $92 a month for the cheapest voice plan which was $40 for 450 minutes, then $40 for the unlimited data plan, then $5 for insurance, $5 for texts, I think 200 or 250, and the rest is taxes. With ATT I'm now paying $60 for voice with 200 texts and unlimited data. I'm saving like $30 a month which after 6 months will pay off the Verizon early termination $175 fee and I now have full internet access where as in Windows Mobile, IE is so limited. The iphone has so many features I can't name them all. I think people just see the $400 price tag and don't do the research on it. I've already filled up my 8GB with vip car clips, music, photos, ringtones, and I haven't had it lock up on me once, the Motorola Q did all the time, had to take the battery out sometimes which was a nuisance. I'll admit though I never had any service issues with Verizon, but even after switching to ATT, not a dropped call yet either and just as clear. 
 
My friend bought one and linked me to the presentations, and I was sold. Watch all the parts, and you might be sold too. :smiley:

Windows Mobile FTL....That's one of the main reasons I strayed away from many phones.  Windows Mobile OS frequently crashes, even if you keep the phone stock with no customization.

The i760 is amazing!  My roommate manages all the Verizon stores downtown and I get to mess with any new phone I please before it is officially released.  That phone is awesome.  I have never heard anythiong good about the helios my friends have, and never heard anything good about anyone that owns an Iphone.  Most of their touch screen sensitivities fail very quick.

I know, right? The thing that makes it most justifiable is the fact that you're not just buying a phone, you're buying a smartphone and an Ipod.. well worth the asking price if you ask me. Not to mention the Regular widescreen Ipod Videos go somewhere around 300 dollars now, totally worth the price. It's like having a laptop with me wherever I go, I can do anything I ever wanted.. anywhere.

I skipped over this thread but recently my LG chocolate crapped out on me. I need to keep it slid up for it to work. If I slide it back down, the screen turns white and I need to remove the battery and play with it for like 10 minutes to get it to work. Im currently using verizon and never had an issue with them. Infact, I would get bars where people in my area wouldnt with AT&t. I still want an Iphone though. Its a panty dropper

If the touch screen fails, it'll be covered under Apple's warranty.

Me and my girl both have one and we've been hearing what people are saying about them whenever they ask us how we like it. We've been noticing the anti-iphone guys seem to be really upset they are locked in their contract or just not up to paying $400 for a phone and are quick to point out any flaws in the iphone they can come up with that they say they've heard somewhere, I guess it helps them sleep at night, I don't know why, but they are just pessimistic about it. Everyone I've ran into who has one, loves their iphone, I do, and I'm not just saying that because I'm supposed to defend why paying $400 for a phone, its just worth it once you see all the possibilities. Again, the MacWorld Iphone vids on youtube will amaze anyone, or at least anyone who is optimistic about it, lol.

I just didn't want to pay more each month and not have full internet capabilities. My Motorola Q was cool when it first came out, but I'm never going back to Windows Mobile. Actually the salesman at the Apple store told me neither apple nor AT&T offered a warentee when I "test drove" the Iphone.  I am no "anit-Iphone" person, but just like the Ipods.  The Gen 1 units do have a lot of problems.  Once the Gen 2 and Gen 3 versions are released in the next year, I will more than likely be purchasing one after AT&T's exclusivity runs out and they are available for Verizon.  I dont really want to change carriers right now as i have unlimited everything for $40 a month on my companies corporate plan and i dont even pay that.

I wouldn't change carriers either if someone was taking care of my bill. I use to have Nextel and someone would take care of my bill, but the service sucked so bad, I was willing to pay for my own bill if I could switch to Verizon, which I did and it was $90/month for what I needed, and now $60/month with ATT. I barely go through a 100 texts and 300 anytime minutes in a month, but I'm forever using the data connection for email and web browsing. What problems do the Gen 1 units have?

There are a few things i have issues with the gen 1 units.  First they have a glass screen, I have cracked a plastic screen on my old chocolate dropping it on carpet, that just sounds dangerous.  All touch screen phones have around a 45% chance of touch screen failure, the Iphone has no other way of functioning without its touchscreen.  And it has the nicest camera you can get in a phone.......  but you cant send picture messages.  Thats just disappointing.

Again, not bashing the Iphone, I will own one when they work out some bugs, these are just issues i have with the first gen units, I hope they are fixed in the second gen.

im looking at gettin a new service(current t-mobile cust) and i checked out at&t and verizon. for identical plans betweend the two. total cost from cingular was like 70 bux and from verizon it was about 140 per month

The workaround is to send it as an email, its just as simple. Anyone who has a phone with access to their email, such as a smartphone or iphone can access their email and see the picture and it should be free because it'll be included in the data plan and not towards picture texting. The free Yahoo email push feature is very useful for this method. Yahoo email is automatically "pushed" to the phone, so emailing the picture is almost as quick as picture texts. :smiley:

OH really? what kind of plans were you looking at? i do MAJOR texting, so i need unlimited, and i also am paying for 2 phones. verizon service is good, i really like it, it's just their phone selection REALLY sucks. that and i could get a bit more features with helio, i just don't really know how well their service is. 

att/cingular/whatever the hell they are nowadays, i was paying almost 70 bucks a month for 1 phone? that's ridiculous. i pay 100 for 2 phones, with verizon.

verizon's internet plan for unlimited was 49.99, and i think cingular was somewhere around there, sprint's is like 20, so is t-mobile, I don't know why verizon and cingular want to charge double for the same damned internet. 

the i-phone is an AWESOME phone. I fricken love my friends i-phone. There's so many features though, that I wouldn't utilize it, so it's not really my cup o tea.

When the battery on your iphone dies have fun with the fact that it has no removable battery.  Also enjoy the slow internet and heat issues.  Oh and lets hope you don't drop it...like ever.  Glass screen pwnsju.

By the time the usable battery life is up, it'll be the end of my contract and time for a new phone. You right about the slow EDGE network, I'll give you that, but the built-in wi-fi makes up for it. No problems of heat with mine, maybe its the software version on the 1st batch of iphones released. I'm pretty good with handling my phone, if I was worried about dropping it, I would get a Nextel phone, which I've had and they are like bricks.

nobody here got love for the Sony Ericson P1i? I've had it for a few weeks now and I love the way it looks, feel, and it's features. I had the T-mobile Wing before this and features are almost the same, but the P1i is smaller and thinner.

I went to see a few phones yesterday before deciding. The Pantech Duo just got to the stores and its a pretty bad ass phone. 
 
- Pantech is the 3rd largest from Korea (I think) behind Samsung and LG.
- They also make the Helio Ocean....but the Duo is smaller. 
 
It feels pretty light/small and not as bulky as I had thought. Anywayz, I think thats t he one I'll get. They wont have anyymore in stock till tuesday tho :sad:

I've been using the Cingular 8125 the past year. It's made by HTC. I think their new one is called the 8525, or Tytn or something.

A little on the bulky side but it packs a lot of features. I watch compressed DVD movies in it, browse the web, make unlimited calls using Skype, etc. It has Bluetooth, Wi-fi, infrared. The only downside is that it's running Windows Mobile. And it gets sluggish from time to time. That's why I have a cheap phone from Boost Mobile for my back-up.

Just get something simple. The tmobile dash was rated #3 on msn for a while. I have one and I like it. Very clean, easy calls, text, planner, calender, and all (not a touch screen though). I used to have a sk2, and sk3 I didnt like it but you might like it for texting alot. It was kinda bulky and everyone had it. I got the dash for around 270 but you can get one cheaper when you open a contract with tmobile. I would get an iphone but the shits expensive. I'd rather put the money into my car. I mean, I can listen to music and watch youtube videos on a computer.

I ended up getting 3 Pantech Duo phones. Heres a pic of them with my treo to compare size 
they look better in person with a black chrome like finish. the slide mechanism is very smooth and takes little effort.

The Voyager is a lame excuse for an 'iphone killer'. It can't do anything that the iphone can really do, and it's just really a touch screen updated enV. The other one, with the dual touch screen looks kind of interesting, and I think I may just go with that, it's a normal 'cool' phone, and unless something else like a CAMERA PHONE comes out through verizon, i think i'll be happy with it. 

I was thinking about the blackberry pearl, but idk if i want to pay for the blackberry plan, i don't really know how useful it will be to me. 

I'll probably get that other new phone from verizon and an itouch.. I-touch is so awesome.

I've been hearing rumors that people are hacking the i-phone like crazy to get it to work on other networks, but all i've seen are t-mobile capable phones. rumors of them being on non sim card networks too, but no actual evidence. THAT would be worth getting an i-phone lol.

How is the M1000?  My SH902 is acting up so I may need to get a new when I go back.  I was thinking about getting a W-Zero3 actually but would hate to be back on a PHS.

So I went to Verizon today, checked out a few phones.

 The Venus, is retarded. I don't like the touch screen buttons they have, and it's just like a chocolate it seems. 

The samsung that was shown here is alright, if it didnt have the windows mobile OS it would be pretty good. I have personal beef with the mobile OS as that's what I have now and despise it. 

The Voyager however, is not what I thought it would be. I will be buying it, it was a pretty nice phone to play with. NOT an i-phone killer, but a pretty good competitor I think. I will probably be purchasing one in the coming months. The touch screen isn't as nice as the I-phone, but works well enough. The vibration when you touch it tripped me out at first. 

The browser isn't dumbed down like I thought it would be, but it's not safari. You can zoom in and out, but not as well as the I-phone. You actually have to touch a +/-  for it, rather than spreading your fingers (which is  fuN!) on the i-phone. 

I didn't mess with the qwerty keyboard with the browser open, so I don't know how much it changes the maneuverability of the browser. 

Other than that, it's just like the EnV with a little bit different menu. Not hard to navigate, but not as easy as the I-phone. 

Everything is touch screen though, you don't have to arrow down or anything to get to different parts of the menu, you can actually scroll. 

It sucks that verizon couldn't work out a deal apple and grab the I-phone.



There was also a camera phone, which was 3mp, but was not out yet, but is out already online. It looked nice, but I wanted to play with it in the store at first before I bought it. Seems like the Voyager will get me spending money though. 

V-cast TV is cool too lol. For 40 bucks a month more htan what I'm paying now (basically 40 bucks a month for any plan it seems) I'd get the v-cast package (which includes internet, mobile mail, v-cast tv, downloads, etc) unlimited text to anybody, and unlimited minutes to verizon users. Doesn't seem to bad of a deal anymore, considering that Verizon wanted to charge me 49.99 a month for just data which will now be unlimited.

dont get it
its the FAIL

browsing is hella slow
screen is nowhere near bright enough for daytime
battery life is decent
no voice tags
but other than that its cool
Its got tab browsing which my X02HT doesnt
but other than that the X02HT is the best phone ive had yet

[B]Verizon Wireless plans to open its network to devices other than the ones hand-picked by the company, a move that could expand the features available on mobile phones and give the second-largest U.S. wireless carrier a response to a phone software project led by Google Inc.[/B] 

 
The decision, announced Tuesday, means that customers would be able to buy devices of their own choosing and run them on Verizon's network. Traditionally, wireless providers like Verizon let customers pick only carrier-approved devices, with carrier-approved software features.
The model has some benefits for consumers, because many of the available phones are subsidized by the wireless provider. That means devices that would otherwise cost hundreds of dollars are available for under $100 or even for free.
But because this "walled garden" approach dictates which services customers can use — so as to maximize profits for the carriers — the traditional model has not created a broad, open environment commonly thought to best encourage outside software developers. It is as if some Web sites ran only on certain brands of PCs.
Verizon's new plan, which is expected to be running by the second half of 2008, will hardly be taking a sledgehammer to the walled garden. The traditional model, in which Verizon selects phones to sell, will still exist. And the company will let customers operate other phones on its network only if the devices have passed tests, which their manufacturers will pay for, in a Verizon lab.
Even so, Verizon's announcement indicated it was willing to try out the idea that customers want more flexibility in what they can do with their phones — even though it could force the carrier to make do with being a basic provider of wireless access rather than a value-added content provider as well.
Tuesday's news gave Verizon Wireless — a joint venture of New York-based Verizon Communications Inc. and Britain's Vodafone Group PLC — the second landscape-shifting announcement in the wireless industry this month.
In hopes of making Web surfing and other advertising-supported features more prevalent on cell phones, Google said Nov. 5 it was developing a free software package for wireless devices to operate on.
Key phone makers, including Motorola Inc., Samsung Electronics Co., and LG Electronics Inc. have agreed to use it in some devices. And some wireless carriers, including Sprint Nextel Corp. and Deutsche Telekom AG's T-Mobile, have said they would support devices with the software on their networks.
Verizon Wireless is not in the mix, at least for now. (Nor is the largest U.S. wireless provider, AT&T Inc., the sole domestic carrier of Apple Inc.'s innovative iPhone.) However, Verizon Wireless spokeswoman Nancy Stark said a phone with the Google software could make it onto Verizon's network through the new plan to let customers buy their own devices separately.
The flexible approach was praised by the Federal Communications Commission chairman, Kevin Martin, who has pushed carriers to allow open-access freedoms as a condition of an upcoming auction of the airwaves. And telecommunications analyst Dave Burstein, editor of the DSL Prime newsletter, predicted that the "wonderful" new approach would lead to phones with such innovative specialties as extremely cheap international calling or exceptionally long battery life.
Verizon's plan also has support from Microsoft Corp., which would love to get its Windows Mobile software into more consumers' hands.
"This is a big step in a journey that the entire industry is making," said Scott Horn, general manager of Microsoft's mobile communications business.
However, it's unclear how much effect Verizon Wireless' venture will have. One reason is the lab testing for third-party devices. Gartner Inc. analyst Ken Dulaney said that process could be so slow as to hinder the envisioned onslaught of creative new devices. Verizon Wireless executives pledged that it would be a simple process in the range of weeks, not months.
Also, until some killer application emerges, it's unclear how many consumers would prefer to buy their own, unsubsidized device and then sign up separately for time on Verizon Wireless' network.
"U.S. consumers are used to the idea that a phone costs $50-$100. This is going to be jarring to the mass audience," said Charles Golvin, an analyst with Forrester Research.
The advantage could be that such a customer might be able to bring the device to other carriers that share Verizon's network standard, assuming they follow suit with such an open-access plan. That freedom, like other consumer liberties, have been lacking in the wireless phone business.
"I hope this catches fire, and I hope this goes across the world," Dulaney said, "because it is the way to make wireless data more successful."

Now would that be like, a sim card approach? or you just toss them an imei and hexidecimal number and they give you phone coverage...hmm...this is something i  could use...i cld hold out for another 6 months i guess....

i'll be sure to stay away thanks!  It was cool about a year ago when Japan still didn't have any PDA type phones but I forgot about X02HT...except I dunno if I wanna go with Softback b/c I had horrible experiences with J-Phone and my friends are not liking Softbank's service.  

I need to update my USDM cell too...ugh.  friggin digital gadgets.

Has anyone seen the new Verizon phone that looks like an iPhone but with a screen on the backside?  This girl that sat next to me in class had it and that thing looked awesome!  can't wait till i'm done with my sprint contract.

Yeah...that's the voyager. That's the phone I reviewed a couple posts above.

 I think I may wait til either a '2nd gen' comes out, to see if they fix some of the quirks people are dealing with, or if verizon really is going to allow you to use other phones, I may grab a nokia n93/5 or the I-phone, depending on how their plans are for non verizon phones.

Supposedly Verizon didn't give apple any freedom when building their iPhone. They probably wanted to put all that VCast crap on it and then charge an arm and a ball to listen to music.

That's the thing, is they DID want to do that. NOW if you look at the voyager, yes, they added their vcast stuff onto it, but then again, the browser is almost untouched. Yes, it's a 'verizon' browser (if there is such a thing really?) but it's full internet. 

There are a bunch of verizon things, but I don't think apple would have had a problem maneuvering around it. Menu style, it's almost like the iphone. 

 As far as compatibility/and upgrade issues though, that would have been a problem with the verizon format, and the whole ipod integrated music system would have not worked with the vcast music system. That's probably the big thing that stopped them from  working out a deal. 

And I don't blame them for not, I just wish they would. Verizon never has cool 'exclusive' phones. It's always either a shared phone, or a 'knockoff' such as the voyager. Oh well, can't blame their service. Never had a dropped call, was able to take calls in a casino in the middle of nowhere, when everyone else had no service, including cingular users. I even had full bars.
