This is a good thread. I'm not much of anything but we did buy GLD (gold) a few weeks back, and I bought a bunch of physical silver. I'm kinda feeling the precious metals right now.

i've been really interested in this for the last couple years. once my business evens out, i'll probably start pumping some profit into trading.

Yeah, here's a god tip...STOP MODDING! Haha...but seriously, just open an etrade account and buy something...that's what I did...I've been doing this for about 4 years and everything is self taught...and only invest what you're willing to lose...
I don't have a desired portfolio...I know I should be more diversified but I go on how much noise the company and sector makes...
Ej and yge and china based companies...ej is chinas largest real estate company and yge makes chips for chinas cell phone market...with chinas booming economy, more land to develop and more people with cell phones...makes sense right?
I've been buying and selling nflx for 3 years now...I bought them in the august decline for 17 and will sell them again shortly...they are on their way up but I see bigger gains in waste management...
Oh yeah, I also have oceanfreight (ocnf)...they have the largest fleet of 7 cargo ships and will be adding one more in the near future...they also have a good dividend payout...
How often do you guys keep your shares? Short term, long term or depends? For me, I sell then I think the stock is nearing the top end otherwise ill keep it...and I never ever sell for a loss...

depends which stock(s) you buy...the more agressive one's, especially with a small market cap, you can double your money in a few days...but bigger companies tend to be more stale and gradually increase over a number of years...i like stocks that are risky and considered volitile...it's only risky if you don't know what your doing and don't research the company and/or sector...
playing stocks is like a rollercoaster ride...they go up and down practically every second...it's not umcommon for some stocks to see 10% plus fluxuation in one day...i've owned a few that have seen 30% declines in one day...i've also had stocks where i bought stocks at $2.15 and sold a few months later for nearly $20...last i saw it, it's almost $40....

a thousand dollars isn't going to get you very far. you could purchase shares in 1 to 2 companies at most, or put it into a mutual fund.
you can invest in a mutual fund, but it is neither guaranteed income, a more sound investment (considering there are hundreds of them to choose from), and definitely a less useful learning tool for when one day you are not investing 1k, but 100k.
I would suggest finding a online broker such as etrade or tdameritrade and depositing at least $5k to start. $10K would be a good working war chest.
and then start reading. watch cnbc, to see what's going on in the world. read online/book that teaches you the jargon.
it turns into a fun hobby. I made $1k in the past month trading stocks on my down time.

if you buy a stock, and own it for less than 1 year, you pay capital gains tax at (assumed) ~35-40%. if you hold over a year, it drops to 15%.
like VIP - UCF, i trade quite a bit. And get a huge rush out of the volatility. It's a bit like gambling at the casino, except your "brains" get more stimulated.
some brokerages have limits on day trading (buy and sell the same stock the same day) so you will have to have x dollars minimum in your account.

i've been using etrade for the last 3-4 years...their trades are $15/per and right now they have some promotional special offering 30 free trades or something...and if you guys don't trade a lot, that will last you a loooong time...etrade has great customer service...whenever i have questions about my account or funds, they give quick answers...
personally, i started my etrade account with $500 back when i was in the military...i started buying large quantities of penny stocks...stocks around $2-$3...at first, i lost a couple hundred, studied why, put more money into my account, lost more money, studied why and how...put more money in and started making some profit...you'll learn more from losing than you do from gaining...like i said, it depends on the investor...some may get discouraged and quit but if you really have the desire to make money, you'll stick with it and grow...
a great book to read is "a walk down wall street" by peter lynch...i read it once every couple years...
i'm so confident in my knowledge of stocks, i even buy on margin...buying on margin is something i DO NOT suggest...so please don't do it...haha...

I use tdameritrade, and they charge $9.99 per trade - limit or market. (they used to charge more for limit)
they also have a promo, i think it's free trades for 60 days or something like that.
there's a major one out there at $6.99, but i forget who it is.
