best subwoofer set up for a sedan without taking up space

what you guys is the best sounding subwoofer set up for sedan trunks ? facing rear? facing up ?

how about free air mounted on baffle facing backside of rear seat upper deck?

facing the trunk lid in a ported box is fine. Of course the enclosure MUST be made to spec that the subwoofer is recommended. ;)

rear i think it seems to run best you can also try it backward facing. ;)

face'n up mounted on the rear deck would be my pref..

get a sub that can be ran free air and mount it on the rear deck.

u guys are actually describing infinite baffle setups and yes that is the best way to save space basically using the trunk as an enclosure. just make sure you seal off the front of the sub from the rear. id recommend a pair of image dynamics idmax 10s or 12s since those really come to life in an IB setup.

Anybody with an LS that has thier subs in the trunk? I saw that the LS' gas tank is behind the rear seat right under the rear deck!

Will the gas tank be a problem if I put my sub in the trunk?  wil it "muffle" the bass down because its blocking the interior?

the stock sub is already in the rear deck of the trunk, set up in open air fashion.

assuming you mean adding subs in typical fashion (in some box in the trunk), it still shouldn't be a problem. technically anything in the trunk will make the sound quieter than if there was no sound deadening material and there was an open space to the cabin in front of the trunk.

for me and my ls, the best solution was simply replacing the stock sub with an aftermarket unit, and using an aftermarket amplifier (given that the stock amplifier is quite weak) so that i am able to enjoy my music while still having the large space of the trunk. it's definitely not as loud or hard hitting as it would be with a higher end sub in the same place, or the same sub in a box, but it suits my needs.

if you truly need hard hitting and loud bass, i suppose you need to have the sub in some box in the trunk. if you just want to enjoy some music, and don't need it pounding, consider just replacing the stock sub in the stock location.

And the LS takes a 10" sub right?

JL Audio has a few free air subs still.

the 90-92 ls' have an 8" sub. after that, it's 10" in the stock location. you could put a 10 inch on a baffle, and it may fit in the stock location.

techinically, any sub can be used in a free air application... however, most subs these days are designed to be put into a box of some sort. boxed versus open air, 99% of subs out there will sound better in a box. but for those who aren't that concerned with overpowering bass, or want to have space in their trunk, open air may be the way to go.

dls makes open air subs. however, they seem to be impossible to find here in the u.s. i e-mailed both companies listed as u.s. distributors, but to no avail. it wasn't that big of a deal to me to try and call anyone and find it. they have an 8 inch (oa8) and a 10 inch (oa10).

Im not really into bass music...I love an all around sound system.

Im going to look into just replacing my stock sub and adding an aftermarket amp. 

You guys should look into Pioneer's new shallow woofers that are out this year, They are the carbon woofer series (i believe its thier midline) woofer. BTW here's a quick picture i took:

I havent personally heard them but feedbacks were said that it was comparable to the carbon series woofers.

My Pioneer rep said that with the 10" woofer in a E320 sounded awesome with the free air set-up. :)

You can run any sub free air if you get a amp with a Q control. Orions older stuff like the HCCA'S and the XTR'S all had ajustable q controls. If your just into music get a JL or something and a HCCA 225 with a Q control set the Q higher than the FS and boom. Yes you might want to throw something like Dynamat in the back pannles to help the sound.

Or if your into crazy Ill post pics of my 4 12"'s I dumped in my aristo yes its a vert but I could build the same box in a car. You still have a few inches between the gastank and the rear tray plus a bunch of width. So a box and a few feet of dacron and you will be set.

hey post pictures if you have any. i want to see 4 12 in an aristo.

im running 1 15" alpine type r subwoofer free air style...upside down and using the trunk as the box..running only a fosgate 500w amp to it and it thumps prertty good..if you mount it to the back of the seat with reinforcements, it should hold up real nice, bump real hard and take up hardly ne truck space..

would a 10w7 fit in the trunk of a gs4 with the spare tire still accessible?
