Will VIP ever get the respect it deserves???

SO I have to vent to you guys about my day so far at work!
Sorry if I sound like I'm bitching! I don't mean to be a Kanye!!!!
So I work for a company called mitchell1 which is  a company who manufactures shop manuals
(they're known for there ONDemand5 software) and we have alot of retired mechanics and gear heads who are all into all things automotive! Now they have seen my car go from stock to where it is now and have mixed feelings about the style! I usally get, "Your gonna be going through tires alot", "How do you drive that low", "Curtains are gay", "Why Pancakes", etc.... but for the most part I got a little respect.....(which I'm not looking for and could care less about)
 
So I thought I share w/ a few friends this crazy Y33:

I found that many didn't respect or understand it until they really got to see it, help out with it, etc... That being said, they see your car everyday and still feel like that- so they may not have a chance! I know that many of my domestic 'race car' buddies never understood it till I got my first set of tires in, or when I was fine tuning my suspension, etc. Then they started to appriciate the style and uniqueness associated with our style.

6 months ago that "Max Camber" thread would have gotten hated on in this forum too. Its only very recently that people here are starting to warm to the hardcore camber look. Even grant once stated "I hate that much camber" when asked about the new trend... but it grows on you, and now he has more camber than all of us!

So i am not surprised they started hating on the style after seeing camber like that. Then once they had it in their mind that it wasnt cool, they just started finding other things to hate on.

You know what i find funny though? The number of net users that see pictures of my car and say "that camber is ridiculous", yet when i am out on the street all i get is slack jaws and smiles...

I personally think it will always be a fringe society of modders, I don't think VIP will ever be a mainstream style in the USA, but you know, it's not a mainstream style in Japan either. 
 
Mitchell software is some AWESOME stuff BTW, we used it a garage I worked once. Expensive, but worth it, it's like 2k a year for the license or something IIRC.  I work in racing, and fortunately, all the gear heads here think my Q is cool.  I think these guys will like anything that someone puts time and effort into though, we have drag, go-kart, sprint racers, etc all working here, I'm kinda surprised your co-workers aren't more open since they're obviously qualified gear-heads.

One of my favorite things though is when a guy shows up in some cool, old American Iron hot-rod and digs my car.  To me, that's a real gear head: they appreciate all styles, it may not be for them, but they can still dig it.  Ya dig?  lol

Yos, Oscar! I ONLY care about the respect given to me by my friends and VIP constituants. I can give a crap about what else anyone thinks. I'm sure I can make cracks on ppls clothes i.e. sneakers, hair dos, smells ie. bad breath, their cars, face/teeth/height...etc. but my principals are too high, IMO. In my world those unaccepting close-minded peeps are just VISITORS. Buck up lil' trooper.=)

I think I get the worst of the worst. I am a firefighter in South Fla, I wont put the departments name out there but, mostly the department is made up of older white dudes (no offense, just facts) that are into big trucks and American muscle. When I pull up in my LS I catch sh!t every time cuz I dont have a truck, and when I show them my plans (K-Break, bags, etc.) most feel like its the most retarded thing in the world. So I know how you feel homie, but when it  comes down to it, thats what makes VIP so dope. Even though we may think that VIP is becoming too mainstream, in actuality we are still an underground society made up of a small group of people that know whats up. Game recognize game.

Yea, Mitchell1 is a pretty expensive product! They always are telling us the figures in the meeting! But they are one of or the top of the industry in the info they provide and technology they're bringing! Also, they're owned by snap on tools which is an expensive ass company! And cheap at the same time! Hahahahaha!
 
But yea most of the mechanics here are old guys who pretty much all rebuild and build old cars, muscle cars and anything american I/E coverettes, etc. Then you have the rich IT guys that drive the '08 audio's, VWs and BMW! There's a few EVOs that arn't anything exciting......and then you have this young ass kid who parks his tricked out family car in the front of the building! HAhahaha! I LUV IT!!!! I think they jus give me a hard time because I'm young and VIP styling is so different and new to some many eyes! (New being an understatement)

Honestly man...don't sweat it.  People who appreciate real modding and styles will respect what you do.  I come from a hardcore hotrod/streetrod family and my grandfather loves what I'm doing.  He respects it..he doesn't question it or think it's stupid.  He loves the fact that I love cars and carry on the torch of modifying cars.  We'll always get people who don't understand it or think it's gay.  People used to think the same way about drifting until movies and TV made it mainstream.  Do I want it mainstream..not really.  Why?  Because most things that go mainstream get destroyed eventually by the US market..sad but true.

it's strange because i get the total opposite about my ride.. everytime i take out my ride i have atleast a couple people giving me positive comments, especially from older folks 40+ range... and when i do come across some younger car modders, they run up to me like i'm some celebrity asking if my ride was VIP LOL! :smiley-rofl: ... i really don't give if people hate my car or not, just like what you said.. as long as my girl likes it im koo. fuck haters!

I know I'm kinda new, but I thought I'd share some things other people (including friends, co-workers and even family) have said when I started my UCF11 project.

- why would you fix up an "old man's" car, that's dumb
- it's still ugly, even with the wheels, drop, exhaust etc..
- what the hell is those 4 big a$$ pipes for, exhaust or pitching softballs for batting practice?

there's more but these were said by people who either don't even f@#%n drive (let alone own) a car, or always bums a ride in the "old man's" car.... it just makes me laugh..  I've learned to block them out....

At the san diego auto show, i had several people tell me that we f***ed up a really nice lexus (the airrunner ls430). A couple people said that they have the car and think what we did to it was complete trash :shrug:

I guess you just have to have a certain taste for the style

i hope it does.  vip car owners do not get respect AT ALL b/c of the images attached to it.  id love to see VIP cars get respect here and gain respect in japan also; b/c japanese loves anything american.

Lol yeah people don't understand that the basis of vip is to ride comfortable in style. The car it self is vip. It supposed to have the amenities most cars don't have.  And in general people who drive german cars only like german vehicles which is odd. I'm sure if you wanted a car to compete with an M3, you could get a s13 with an sr20 built for a quarter of the cost and blow their doors off lol.

But yeah, Vip has a lot of stupid ideas. Can't expect people to respect it.
There's no nice way to cut it: a lot of Vip things make no sense at all, and are terrible decisions from a practicality standpoint.

it is my understanding that most vip cars on coils a least are too low to drive "comfortably"
people dont understand vip until they actually witness it with their own eyes. especially from a wheels,tire, suspension standpoint

VIP is suppose to be parallel with the euro tuners of brabus, lorinser, etc. Instead, the US scene is more in parallel with import tuner-punk kids with wheels sticking out 6 inches past the fender.

dude, VIP car owners in Japan do not get respect AT ALL.  You should see the cold stares you get when youre in one.  

It's sometimes even referred to as VIP = "Very 'Itai' Person" in Japanese.  "Itai" meaning something along the lines of an idiot.  sorry it's one of those words I can't think of a direct word.

I think EXE will be easier for the general automotive public to digest.

IMO, Vip will only get the respect from the people who know/understand the roots of itt.
Other than that, if they don't understand it....Then they probably don't respect it.

yea, im a tech at toyota and nobody thinks VIP is tite, the hardcore guys r only into the supras and lifted 4wd toyota trucks...on slow days, i sit next to my tool box and just look at VIPSTYLE magazine all day and they think im crazy....
 
it'll get its repect sooner or later, just as long and we keep this style gangsta with only real shit, no bootleg wheels, kit, etc...
 
i have a feeling them cheap companys r gonna copy all the wheels and mess up the scene... look at rota wheels for example, they copy all the tite rare jdm wheels and flooded the market..

That's why you gotta keep it right. That's why 'copies' are not allowed on this forum really. That's why knockoff's are bashed here, and this is the biggest (afaik the first as well) site for vip cars outside of japan. That's why when people don't respect it, and it's not 'cool' then shit doesn't get copied, because the masses don't accept it. 
 
Another problem, is that people don't realize what vipstyle is. They think it's either V.I.P. or a variation of dub, or bippu, or whatever else you can think of that it's not. They also think it's any car fixed up this 'autolux' way or crap like that. Oh well. Roots are roots, and when it all comes down to it, only vip cars can be vip cars, and only certain rims/kit/stances fit the bill. Keep it real, and respect or not, it'll stay on the right path. Not honda'd out or drifter'd out.

I know with me I started out very very conservative and VIP grew on me as time went by..now I am all about how wide and how low, Pimpin interiors and perfect fitment.:biggthumpup:

my next sedan will be conservative, but at the same time will look tight. You can have it both ways.

Try Diving a Scion.. you get more Hate than anything.. LOL dam box looking cars are stupid.. than you add the VIP style to it and add a FUSA and curtains and some camber and all of a suden you Scion become Gay.. LOL we get that alot on forumshawaii.net lots of hate with the fusas going on in there the past month...

Put it this way real car enthusiasts are those who can respect any type of build our style on any car. those that usally hate are true car enthusiasts. I see it as every car builder put lots of time and money into there rides and every style has there uniqiue touch.. 
 
I remeber when Lowriding wasnt that popular and before it went mainstream. alotof people hated those cars becuase it was totaly differant and if you drove one you were a gangbanger or a drug dealer.. people dogged streching 520s onto a 8 inch rim and what idiot would wana do that. than the hydros.. 
 
Hate will never stop.. only if people could just respect the build.. even if they dont like the style..

but the thing is.....low riders cutlass sierra's, 13" tiny wire wheels...all nasty. The entire genre was based on pure bad taste.

I haveto agree with alot of the statements posted here.
A true car enthusiast respects and appreciate all styles of tuning, styling and what not for the thing they are.
Usually when people have something negative to say it`s because of envy.
I think it plays a big part how we respect others also, you haveto give respect to get respect. If VIP`ers bash on anything different than VIP or VIP style you`ll get nada respect.

WTF are you talking about? Low Riders were built just  as vip cars were built, just as hot rods were built. People wanted a custom ride.

You say that shit about low riders, but praise VIP cars as being 'mature' and whatnot, yet when cocobun talks about how the style is looked down upon in japan, you go and trash him for saying the same thing you just basically said.

Remember, the jinpaira (please correct me if i'm wrong) were the ones who started imitating the real yakuza (who rode around in s-class benz's and other euro luxury cars) by fixing up their toyotas (which were cheaper than importing another benz) to look like euro luxury car. 

By that right there, gave it it's bad name. I'm sure not everybody was a yakuza underling who loved the style, and i'm sure it's definitely not like that now. 

BUT, it is still perceived that way by people who just think that it's 'built on bad taste' as you put it, even in japan. Anyways, don't go badmouthing something that's as equally 'built on bad taste' as the style you are  imitating yourself.

Yea....... I have MADD respect for low riders!!!! And will always be a fan of the OG klassics!!!
They put way more time, effort and money into there cars! I mean most VIP cars won't chrome there whole engine and frame and keep it as clean! Also aside from having flush fitment, bouncing off the ground and wild paint jobs the style of low riders don't fall to far from VIP! Even in Japan lowriders are still becoming a big trend out there! AND how can you pass up a nice thick latina! :biggthumpup: Hhahahahaha!

I doubt that. I had a Y33 dumped on JIC's and adjusted the settings to my personal specs. It rode better than stock IMO. My gf even falls asleep in the car because it's so comfy. 

One good things about coils is that you are low low 24/7. Getting a great set of coilovers will pay off. Just as long as you don't buy cheap crap. 

Also, I always say this to coilover guys... DON'T GIVE UP PLAYING WITH YOUR SETTINGS! Alot of coilovoer guys say "the ride sucks" blah blah but they don't bother to adjust their settings to make for a better ride. 




Now getting back on topic::::::
It's just a different style people have to get used to. Keep in mind, most people you talk to who see your car-- look at it from a performance point of view. 

Function over style is what they look for: 
"Can your car handle corners well?" 
"Is your car nimble, quick and agile?"
"How well are the modifications made on your car as it pertains to the overall purpose of the vehicle?" 
"Also, does it look good rolling or does it only look good hardparked? "

Those are some of the things the other guys look for when seeing a VIPcar. I suppose it's still new and still in the WHY? stage. 

However if you talk to old old older folks who just like nice luxury they will drool all over VIP.

My car is sacrificing a lot of common sense, in favour of styling.
It went from comfortable, predictable, and practical, and now it's barely drivable on these streets.

This morning, the bumps were so bad my in-dash CD player skipped.  And that's with 65 series winter tires. This summer I'll have to do 205mm or 215mm 45-series (at the sacrifice of mileage and performance) just to have some sort of wheel protection and semblance of comfort. And I don't even know how much cambering and fender whacking I'll have to do after I paint my car for the 2.5th time.


Totally worth it though.

People can either respect the work, or think it's stupid, doesn't matter. It probably is stupid, but it's fun.

I think that in the USA, if you are doing VIP style right, people might not like it, and they might not like you, but they WILL respect you. I dunno how it goes in other parts of the country but around here a dumped black lexus with an aggressive stance and wheels with tint gets alot of cold stares and mugs but people do not fuck with the driver.

Well the thing with that is, it's got almost NOTHING to do with performance, almost all aesthetics. Just like those horrible bad image getting low riders. NOTHING in performance (aside from maybe a well built engine) all aesthetics.

I can see why people don't understand that, but hell, look at the honda crowd. Almost all aesthetics and no motor work half the time, and even the aesthetics are half assed with cut springs and rotas! lol

And I'm sure if you look at the vipcar magazines, you'll see that its' almost always the same. Half the engines in those cars are dirty as hell and stock. But the car looks damn good!

My engine is spotless.  I wish there was some performance I could get above stock with it, but there is nothing for it. Still, I'm happy with my 270 HP, my Q scoots nicely, and I have a lead foot.  To quote Pulp Fiction "I drive real fuckin fast, so keep up..."  There are some who appreciate the performance that was built into these premium luxury cars by the factory, and want to keep that and use it, plus have a nice style to go with it. I dunno what you guys call my car, crap, EXE, VIP, whatever, but to me, I have a 1 of a kind ride, I don't see myself coming and going like an Audi A4 or something, and I love it.  

But the price of gas is really getting to me....

I like this thread. I like seeing people's own personal experiences about how other people view their cars. Even though I don't own a VIP car just yet, I can relate to modifying some of my past cars and some of my friends criticizing me for putting money into a car when I could have just gone out and bought a fast car to begin with.
 
I've never disrespected anything my friends have ever done and over time they started showing me respect for putting all this time and money into my cars. So I can agree if you show respect to other people in turn they will show you respect as well.

Where I am from back in the day as a kid my dad use to take me and my bro to the park on sundays and we would walk around looking at all them lowriders...Yeah it was more of lifestyle..more cholos then anything but there where some brothas to..as I got older somewhere in my late teenage years I had a 87 cutlass with 13x7 triple gold daytons..I lived a certain lifestyle and it was just natural to buy a car like that and hook it up...no questions ask..candy paint and pimped out interiors with booming systems..Hey this sounds like VIP today...hhhhmmmm:dance: 
 
THere is nothing like seeing a bad ass lowrider turning at a stop light doing three wheel motion..I dont know what came first Lowriders or VIP style but I am pretty sure lowriders and the Japanese folks took Q's to the modern day luxury V8 cars..my thoughts...so if it was not for lowriders I dont think we would have VIP personally but once again thats my opionion thus my sig....VIP TO ME IS A MEXICAN LOWRIDER.

I rode pretty much that low with my Q. Although impractical (very impractical), the ride wasn't terrible at all. Even at a stiff settings, the JIC's rode great. My gf still fell asleep!

Exactly. But that's where they are coming from. To them, seeing a VIPcar says "looks like gusto, but not much of it". It will take alot of influencing to get them to catch on and let them know VIP is all about class, not whoopin' ass. HAHA

I've seen a few cars in VIPStyle and VIPCar mags who have turbo setups etc. But I agree, the majority of them probably have dirty motors or just a really clean stock motor. Nothing wrong with that. 

But I do give props to Auto Fashion and their Turbo GS. That thing is badass and has the best of both worlds!

Nothing changed at all!  I still like them and allways will..I got a 52 chevy that I am working on..I dont think you will apreaciate it much though. BTW there was no spinners back then but that something I would change now.

i actually think VIP does get respect.  i think it will get more in the future...but right now we get enough.  the people that dont respect it usually will never give any import car respect anyway, besides the supras and others.  you notice the ones that dont give VIP respect are normally hardcore domestic enthusiasts, who dont even understand JDM.  i say its a style that i like, you can get deeper wheels with the negative camber, and it being so low.  i can drive really low due to the air suspension.  the number one thing that is a hit or miss is always the curtains; the girls love it and the guys are like WHY?.  when they ask if its fast i say its fast enough for me.  if they ask for pirices of parts they understand why i wouldnt want it fast.  i do want it faster but its not a priority.

I'd say that's true for the most part but does not apply to everybody and everything.

No one hates in my face like that except my sister.  Shes like "why would you want to turn your luxury sedan into a civic?"  In a way shes right with the way I chopped it up but that still pissed me off.  I shut her up when I took her for a ride in it and shes like "your car gets you more attention then a movie star."

I'm almost tired of vipcars. Lately, I've found there's more to life than making a car form the vip style and reading posts about how deep someone's lips are, or how much camber they're running. I know stance and wheel fitment is key, but honestly it's not that serious. I'm not saying I've been there, done that, or I reign supreme, but I'm curious to how long it will take before some of the members here will look at vipcar magazines and after awhile the cars start looking all the same. Have we not seen it all yet? As for getting respect from the misinformed, there's not much you can do, and there's really nothing anyone should be doing, just do what you feel is comfortable. I mean I'm always open to suggestions, but the need to receive respect from the misinformed is not a priority on my list. No vipcar owner should get worked up about it.

Yea I totally agree. I'm not disgusted with VIP cars at all. Just some sediments on what it has turned into from the "elitists" who tend to speak too much. Yes alot of people take this thing too seriously. In the end, it's just a car and one shouldn't worry too much about it, as there are more important things in life.

Also, sold the Q for a number of reasons. But I did sell it to a great owner who will take it to the next level, so it won't be the last you will seen of it. Although, it was great being your ivory pearl brother. HAHA!

After reading your quote, I went to the bathroom to drop some bombs and thought about what you typed. And I agree your point, however, first off you view can be said of any interest be it cars, sports, hobbies...etc. IMO what we do here is more then just an expression of our personal interest, @ the same time we fuel each other. I've met alot of cool peeps at the meets I go to and feel right at home because of this common ground. Obviously there will be larger problems in life and those don't just end w/ your personal ones, it's a big world y'know. We impact what we can then move on to keep our chins up. Sometimes ppl out there can take your wind. I'm not sayin' that's what happen in this thread, just that it's a good thing to nurture your passions.:shrug:

I understand Benji and VIP Pete's looks on things. I have never let a car own me and I do think that lots of folks allow for thier cars to own them. They are to consumed with thier cars and live to mod thier cars..I am somewhat of a man with faith and within my beliefs you can not server to masters. This is why with my cars I usually take my time and prioritize what is really important in life. As you get older you mature and let go of what was once everything and realize its just another phaze. I do have 4 kids I coach soccer, I have a few businessess and trying to start another. THere are sometimes when I have a slow month and will take advantage and do some creative modding to my vehicles. I will allways will mod my vehilces but I dont need things done yesterday if you you all know what I mean..I must say one thing though VIP has been the only style of modding where thier are guidlines and such high expectations of how things should be done..not from everybody but most including myself. I think thats why lots of folks start gettting tired of if as BEnji sais as their are rules to follow and if they are not followed we bash on them..I do wonder how folks see it in japan. Are they as silly as us or as rule oriented as us or is it just something that some do and some dont with no prejiduce...hhhmmm I wonder if its just US that have made things so difficult to where we shut people out before they even knock...
 
I am reading this book called a purpose driven life and am learning alot about our purpose here on this world and highly reccomend to those of you that have alot of stress in your lives for what ever reason. It has helped me alot thus far..Its a 40 day journey and I am more than half way done. IT was a christmas present from my cousin..One of the nicest things I could have got.

YEah bro enjoy your life as you please..there is nothing wrong with that..I guess as you get older and take on more responcabilitys things just start to take there place in life..I remember when I was still roaming the streets with my homiez and was all about living for the moment and not preparing for the future..those were some good times but now there just as good but in a totaly different way..I see some of my old homiez from time to time and thier still living the same lifestyles as back then have not grown up to mutch but at the same time dont have what I have..4 kids a mortgage and a wife..hee hee hee hee. THe right women help you mature and grow!

I do have to say one thing though..out of all the cars I have owned this Y33 has brought me the most pleasure and everyday I look at it It just lights up my face with a smile..I am a very proud owner of a VIP car and this is one car that will not leave the family...I will eventually park it and get another DD..I am thinking a Toyota mini van I like them siennas..there pretty pimp...maybe through on some nice shoes and leave it be..if I can..hahahahaa

it has some of the most extreme modifications will little/no regard for anything but looking cool. you put that in front of a gearhead who is used modding for performance and it makes no sense. you put it on the streets where it belongs and people love it.
 
the guy who said it was for punk kids might not have been correct, but i wouldn't doubt that thats the image a lot of people get when they see a vip car. same as a dub or a donk or a slab or a lowrider. they all give off the same stereo type. the styles are built around dressing a car up rather than performance. as long as it looks cool its doing what its supposed to do, not everyone can appreciaite that.

What Benji, VIPete and Zion have said all rings true.  I left this forum more than 2 years ago because I got sick of the elitists who think it HAS to be on the ground and you HAVE to run 30 degrees of negative camber.  It's JUST A FUCKING CAR and everyone has different taste.  I'm almost 40, drive it hard and have enough speed bumps scrape the underside of my "not very low at all" car.  But I like it.  Sure, cars look cool on rails when they're parked but no one can drive that way, I don't care what they say, unless they live in a place like Louisianna which is flat as a board.  And as for cars all looking the same, that is true, you see many of the same cars over and over in the magazines, sure some change alot, but I always like to look at them.

What Zion said about this being his favorite car, I totally agree.  I've had my Q 4 years and of all the cars I've ever modded, I just love this car.  It's so fun to drive, it's so comfortable, it's a great place to spend time.  Even though gas is going through the roof, I want to keep this as my weekend / nice night out car.

the idea of fixing up big japanese luxury sedans has always been appealing, to have a style that caters to a more mature, older crowd is very appealing, something different from the typical benz, bmw, etc.

however, it sure seems like  it is turning into a 3 ring circus consisting of mostly punk kids and ghetto style here on VSC.  This is not what I envisioned VIPcar and VIPstyle to be. Hopefully this is just a momentary thing, and not what is reflective of what VIP will be here in the USA long term.

Then all the posers, bandwagoners, ect... jumped on board and started faking modification (such as dry brushed rust, or i guess that’d be the equivalent of knock off wheels for the VIP crowd) and people started fucking with the style and turning it into something it wasn’t. Eventually people couldn’t handle it anymore and the [b]entire tuning style disintegrated.[/b]

I was really into hoodride when it was around, it was like the perfect outlet for the oppoiste style of VIP. When it all went to shit and died I was really sad, alot of people were, I sincerely think that VIP tuning in america has taken a few steps down the same path the hoodride went, and I think that it has also taken a few steps down the trendy drifter trail (which is like where %30 of our new members come from) and if we don't watch ourselves we'll be watching "b-hip my ride" on MTV.

Personally I don't even want the mainstream to love it. I 'd rather want to drive up and make people fear my car, have rims that are so out of the ordinary that people have to keep staring at them whether they love it or not and while doing so realizing it takes balls just to drive a car like that.

When it all went to shit and died I was really sad, alot of people were, I sincerely think that VIP tuning in america has taken a few steps down the same path the hoodride went, and I think that it has also taken a few steps down the trendy drifter trail (which is like where %30 of our new members come from) and if we don't watch ourselves we'll be watching "b-hip my ride" on MTV.

It's funny that you bring up HoodRide, because I was thinking of exactly that when I was reading this thread.
VW guys are a unique bunch of tuners, they have rules, set opinions, and classes of modification, just like Vip styling does here. They have different names for different styles of doing the same cars, there are debates about poke, and fake rust, and all sorts of stuff, just like we have debates on wheel brands, and platform choices.

These issues aren't unique to Vip styling. And even though Hoodrides seems to have died, I can guarantee that the people who really loved doing it still do it, regardless of public opinion, and the bandwagoners will fall off as they always do.

'nother example. Rat rodding has been around for decades, but has recently resurfaced as the new hot shit buzzword. Was it dead in those decades between conception and retro cool? Nope, people still did it, people still thought they were crazy, that didn't stop the core group.

Firelizard, Rat Rods are another PERFECT example, people have been doing them for YEARS (50, 60+) but having it going mainstream (at least in the car modding community) gave people online all over the US a chance to spread the trend and better define the style.

When Hoodride collapsed the style itself didn't die, but what was lost was a way of bringing all those people together. Now I know alot of you guys live in CA and could get together and bullshit VIP and all that stuff without an online. But alot of us here, live in areas where there is ZERO vip ANYTHING. I live in the MIDDLE of Minnesota of all places and conveniently most of the people here follow VIP are my close friends. For US to lose a forum like this cause of Hoodride syndrome would be really sad thing. 

I think we all gotta remember that we love the style and thats why we do it. Although secretly I agree there should be a marque genocide on VSC to save it from becoming the next Hoodride i'll save that debate for if things get worse. Remember guys :yahoo_6:

It's a style of restoration for old air cooled VWs, usually barn finds or backyard treasures.

The parallel it has with Vip is that it also involves impractical, and extreme modifications, that to a non-enthusiast make no sense. Two of the major quirks that raised eyebrows were the nearly undrivable ride heights, and the tendency to keep old body rust rather than fix it.
Hoodrides have been one of my major influences (believe it or not)

What I mean by that is those of us who know about the style do all we can to preserve it's integrity and make sure it doesn't get bastardized by those who have no f-ing clue what they're talking about. This is where the general public will not give respect.  They view it as modding a car to the point where it's borderline un-usable.  That's where the general public doesn't, and never will get it, regardless of the history or origins.
 
I myself have seen so many extreme builds out there that I'm going to stay a little more on the conservative side.

I don't see the negative connotation of Japonism, it's a historical fact in art. Influence of Japanese arts on those of the 'West'. That pretty accurately describes Vip styling.

i don't think they meant disrespect...i work with a LOT of old timers...they don't care for the styling at all...i bring vip car magazines to work and show the painters and body men, they would take a glance and say 'so'...not like they don't think it's nice...its just that they have a "been there, done that" attitude...its hard to explain but nothing nowadays impress them...very rare will they be impressed by something not old school...quite honestly, i don't blame them...show me some VIP and i'm amazed...show me an old cuda with mods on the outside that only a "true" hotrodder can identify with...
 
if you think about it, what era of car styling really got "the respect" it deserves...it's really opinionated...doing custom flares and and piecing together air bags has been going on for years...i'd LOVE to see someone make a '74 camaro door shell out of a piece of metal, a hammer, and a tree stump that's about 35 years old...then brazing all the seams...
 
and truthfully, i love VIP and no one can take that away :)

well if you think about it we're the "hot rodders" of this generation. back when the "old timers" modified their cars their elders thought it was dumb also. but they didnt worry about what they thought and honestly i dont worry about what anyone else thinks. Its amazing the different cultures ive notice in different styles of car enthusiasts.

I came from the 240 scene, got to know alot of people and learned alot.

Then i visited the VIP scene, i can say i learned and gain alot of knowledge and my style in cars changed from a track spec car with some wide wheels, roll cage, and aggressive suspension, to sleek and elegant styling of a VIP car.

But i entered automotive enthusiast with a passion for driving more then looks.
And i have to admit, i did fall for the luxury of a big body sedan with a powerful smooth V8 and dish face wheels with perfect fitment.

As time go by with my Q, i felt the urge to be able to drive my car around corners at high speeds and not have major body roll.

So im in my search for the perfect luxury sports coupe. That search introduced me to the Mercedes Benz CLK430. Whats a better mix i was asking for? A 2door sporty coupe with a big V8 and still the styling of a luxury car without loss of performance. And its not a tiny roadster! So i still have the joy of driving around with a big body car.


I joined acouple MB forms to gain knowledge, and the MB luxury world is nothing alike to the VIP luxury world.

They care about wheel fitment, but not as crazy as we are. They can live with a 1.5" fender gap, and a lil sunken wheel. Here that would be taboo, we have to fit perfect. There are other different views on things, but i dont want to get into a big story.

I just think that the "Automotive Enthusiast" world has alot of different aspects and sights on things. We are not the same, but still love the same thing. Our cars.


VIP is not that known, but it IS slowly growing. Its just not its time to blow yet.
Look at how long "Drift" style cars and drifting were underground untill it blew up in the US.
Just enjoy it for now, because what you guys roll is "Unique" to others. Once it blows, that Q45 will be a expensive 4door trend that will just be shadowed by another upcoming trend. Who knows? VIP electric cars?


Until then, we still have VSC to show off and earn our respect towards each other.

as stated before its only gonna get the respect when ppl start building cars worth respecting..and its really only gonna be a select few in the scene...no one really cares about built sedans.

personally, i hope VIP gets more coverage and respect. but if it get popular and everyone and their cousin starts doing it, it'll be as bad as DUB style 300s and Magnums and Chargers and junk like that. i really enjoy seeing a VIP car cruisin' down the road and it being so rare that i almost run into the rear bumper of the person in front of me. it's the rarity of seeing a nicely tuned VIP around town that makes the scene exciting. although i wish there were more people into it here in Alabama. off topic of that, please don't ask me if everyone in Alabama is poor or if we all live in trailers or if we have electricity. that may be true in parts of Alabama, but the city and suburbs of Birmingham is very rich w/ plenty of nice homes. unfortunately, too many people around here are into dubs and donks. i even see VIP platform cars turned into DUBstyle.

I don't think you'll have to worry about no longer seeing hot Vip cars standing out.

It's like with hot Spocom or whatever you call the past styles. The 'real' cars still stand out,

Honestly, I see a compact with a can and maybe some rims or something, at least 3 times a day while commuting. How often I see a car that actually makes me see it and go "damn, they did a good job" is more like once a month.

Even on cruise nights, when a lot of tuned cars and hot rods come out, the ones that really stand out as beautiful creations really do shine in their own light compared to the half-assed jobs.

sometimes, even half-assed jobs stand out. one of my co-workers has a Honda Civic hatch (rounded body style, don't know what year) that has a bunch of bad body work and has a spray-painted camo paint job and sounds like it is farting all the time (ya'll know the sound). he does have some cool mods under the hood though

just so you know VIP does have mad props from the lowrider truck and car scene.  i did the forbidden fantasy show with one of my workers whos a show vendor and club photographer.  its a show for lowrider trucks and cars.  one of the biggest shows in CA, there was about 700 cars on display.  you know, body droppin scraping body and shit.

well i displayed my car and they gave me the ONLY spot on the grass where the main stage is.  got asked millions of questions by spectators and other poeple showing their cars.  

BUT i may have to apologize in advance for telling people to do research on this forum, so there may be some new members with noob questions.

heres one pic i took, will post up a wider shot if i can get one.
