Height is not a VIP thing (let's keep it civilized)
I don't know why the last post by Kevin FLS was deleted. it's very evident that kevin was having internal struggles with his drop height, IMO it's our responsibility to relieve him of this inner struggle. =)
To post a topic like that, out of the blue, is like screaming for help!! =)
IMO it really doesn't matter if drop height is a VIP thing or not.
What matters is that it is visually satisfying. To see the fenders hug up against the tires, 1 inch away from kissing the lip is very satisfying. To see the car parked on the floor, with practically zero ground clearance is very satisfying. Filling in that gaping gap between the wheel-tire and car is crucial with satisfying the visual effect.
sure there are cars that look great without a crazy drop, but it will always look better when it is lower. the lowness factor, or shall I say "the holy sh*t" factor will always make it more appealing to the eye.
it's a visual thing, kinda like when women wear high heals. A hot woman looks hotter when wearing a 6 inch heal vs a 3 inch heal right? same thing. It makes no sense but visually it is very pleasing.

But I agree with what you're saying..there are several ways to make it visually appealing, but having it low is very important to the overall appearance. It doesn't matter what you see in magazine ads..it matters what you see in features in those magazines and what you see at events and meets that show how things really are and what's the "norm".

The way I learned it, the ideal was to have lip a hair's breadth away from the fender. You have to be low for that. That's what I'm sticking to.

Well, to that, not every "featured" car is slammed either, only the ones you choose to focus on. Guarantee you take any of your VIP mags out and some of the feature cars are conservative, some are extreme. But yet somehow, you fail to see that there actually is VARIETY in there.

Yeah, there's variety, but F.L.S., they're all low. When they're not, doesn't mean they're hideous monsters, but to me, it means they ain't Vip, they're something else.
In my opinion, unless you're at least tucking some tire, you're not low enough for Vip style. When you can see daylight under the car, that's not Vip to me.

This is one of the reasons why VIP is having a hard time being anything but a niche market. There are many who are so focused on stance being the only thing that makes or breaks VIP, nothing else matters. With this type of narrow minded opinion, growth of the industry will continue to be slow. Many say education will help the scene grow, but many times posts on forums such as this forum do more to alienate people than to help educate and draw them into this type of modification.

Kevin,
just take off that front stillen lip and SLAM it with two way coilover !
that lip is taking up about two inches of ground clearance already, take it off and slam it two inches. You won't lose much ride quality with full tap coilovers, and your "obstacle" clearance will be the same!

Just to put my 2 cents into the matter, I really believe that there many facets incorperated w/ the stlyle. Platform, wheels, stance, dressup mods, the scene, performance, all aspects. Mainly I believe it's the overall look, how these things were utilized. We see extremities in certain aspects and subtlies in others which go hand in hand w/ the comfort level of the driver. A dumped luxury vehicle doesn't define VIP IMO, it's really just a dunped luxury car. I believe it's the combination or balance of aspects, putting your wealth in many areas and growing your passion/comfort/style/luxury the best you can......

height is one aspect of vip..but not limited to just that. IMO its not neccessary to full slam, but the lowest possible clearance gives a more aggresive stance...i think thats also where boso and exc draws the line in vipstyle. Crazy body kits, super wide wheels and super low vs. clean simple bodykits, decent offset wheels, and decent livable ride heights. You have to know which style you are looking at..cause there soo many styles to vip...
in the same sence...car that are super slammed on air ride..look super hot when parked..but when lifted up and driving so high...is that still vip?...LOL...jk...

what was the point of locking one thread and allowing another to continue? i geuss this one does have a more informative tone.
i agree that you do not have to be slammed to look good. there are many different sub-styles encompassed by vip. but to me the best of the best are exactly down the middle; classy, subtle mods with aggressive stance and fitment. but from subtle to wild, we all know a vip car when we see one.

Whatever man, to me, mildly dropped Japanese luxury cars are just nice Japanese luxury cars. lil' more aggressive and you got EXE.
You can't just say "oh, you guys are too strict" because you don't want to go all the way.
To me that's just getting hung up on wanting to get labeled with something hip.

Have you seen a copy of afEXE? Hardly any cars in there are any lower than tire and fender lip matching. Absolutely none of the extreme VIP cars are ever shown in there. EXE is not aggressive at all.
To Daygo, the Stillen lip doesn't affect the height whatsoever, if you look at a side profile pic, the lip is the same height as the side skirts. Plus, the USDM Q bumper is just plain ugly and the Stillen lip does a great job of matching the factory lines, but adding an aggressive look to the front. My Q will never be slammed to the ground, all I want is about 1/2-3/4" lower so the top of the tires are perfectly flush with the fenders like the white Crown Athlete I posted in my thread.

i'm not hating on your stance or anything, i mean imo i like cars that are more slammed, it's just a big turn on for me. if you like how it looks right now, then thats cool too. but the front lip does kind of make it look a bit off. i ordered one for a homie and test fitted it on my ride at all the way down and it was just hanging too low, maybe if you got some aftermarket side skirts and a rear lip it will look a lot better with the stillen lip.
heres those pics..

I think that might be the actual lip I have. I got it from Chris at AF IIRC a few years ago, does that sound right? That's funny. Anyhow, I really like it, I think if it was painted to match your car you'd have thought differently too. It's actually being painted at the shop again right now and I hate the way it looks w/o it!

it don't matter what's on EXE mag or that mag, cars just look better when it's on the ground and the tires are tucking.
and it doesn't matter what the side profile is. It just means the oem bumper is two inches higher than the oem sideskirt, which is probably why it is on same level now.
by looking at daygo's pics, there is now way you can tell me that stillen lip is not taking up two inches. But two inches or not, it just looks very very odd.

dude, there you go with the snide remarks again. that car is nothing special at all imo. your on a vip site pushing exe as if it was the same thing. IT IS NOT. i believe you can build a vip car without being extremely low, but some of your examples are nothing more than japanese cars with japanese (or in the case euro) wheels. respect the boundaries of vip and stop trying to fit your car into them. you know why they don't feature vip cars in an exe magazine? think about it real hard and let me know when you come to the realization that they are telling you the same thing we are.
EXE IS NOT VIP.

yea it would look a lot better painted, but it still is a "STILLEN" lip, and that company is more of a performance and sporty side than anything luxury. i would cover those holes in the front and do something about the sides but why bother doing all that work when you can just buy a clean wald lip?

I'm not unsatisfied with anything, just trying open some of the extremely NARROW minds on here. And BTW, yes EXE IS a part of VIP. It's just the more conservative side of VIP.

That is a Hartge demo car. That's why it sits so high. Pick an enthusiasts car that has been in a real feature, not a product feature. There's nothing wrong with your opinion, there is something wrong with your delivery.
There are different styles and levels..but yours isn't the vip standard. Until you become comfortable with that, I'm sure you'll always have an issue with most of our responses. I would keep from trying to press your opinion so strongly about it. Justifying the way your car looks doesn't matter to us...really, it's no big deal.

from what i've heard and learned is that VIP is about being as low as you can go with super agressive wheels (lower offsets), and throwing on a few exterior mods to top it off. and EXE was on the more conservative side, thus not that agressive wheels, not too low, and maybe even a simple lip kit on their. both show some similar characteristics but are not the same.

i want to know what you think it DOES take to make a vip car since it isn't stance, fitment, or generally accepted parts such as body kits. to me it looks like all you need is a platform, some japanese wheels, and a jdm grill. cause your car is vip right?

Oh sweet, I always thought my car wasnt vip enough, but now I know i dont have to drop it to be vipstyle

Yeah BOYEEEE...
Please show me a picture of a car at a Japanese vip car show, with a trophy in front of it, that is not completely slammed.
I have over 50 vip mags now (probably close to 60), and yet i could count the mildly dropped feature cars on one hand... Why? because that doesnt get attention in Japan. afEXE is for Executive styled cars. Yes, they are "VIP" platforms, but they are not VIP Styled... they are Executive styled.
Walking around the streets of Japan its true that you see alot of cars with mild drops and sunken fitments... BUT these guys arent claiming to be "vip style"!
Its like my GF's Toyota Echo... We put 15" rims on it to make it look a bit nicer. Does that make it "sport compact style"?? NO! It just makes it look a bit nicer

Man, that's one sweet GS.
Apparently Junction Produce don't have what it takes to be VIP either, even though they proclaim to be among the originators of the style, and the cover of the catalog says "VIP IS JP"
yet they show a close up of a wheel and fender and the fender is clearly over the tire:

oh s**t. since it is on the catalog and says "jp is vip" that means stance and fitment aren't vip anymore. everybody air up your bags and crank up your coilovers!
come on man, use your f**kin' head. does it have top be slammed? no. does that mean every car that is not slammed is vip? hell no.
manufacturer cars are going to be tamer. cars in exe magazines are going to be exe. this is all very simple. stop reaching for loose ends, IT IS WHAT IT IS. you can find little examples here and there that have details that go against the norm, but that doesn't change anything.
you can post a picture of wheel gap and say this is vip, but that wheel gap is not the reason that car is on the cover. its the wheel. and i'm willing to bet that if they were to show the whole car there would be a lot more going on tha wheel gap. get a grip.

oh s**t. since it is on the catalog and says "jp is vip" that means stance and fitment aren't vip anymore. everybody air up your bags and crank up your coilovers!

F.L.S. you're pushing your luck here. I suggest you let it go and come to terms with your own car and how you feel about it. Because that's exactly what all of this has to deal with...whether you deny it or not. It's painfully obvious to many of us, so just be happy with your car and move on. This topic needs to go no further. I'm not going to lock this thread...because I want to see the real metal you're made of. Can you resist the temptation??

You fools, he's not claiming to be VIP, but EXE. There's a difference he stated already yo! yet he also says exe is VIp...but his car isn't vip but exe...so contradictive....just drop it already. This subject, and your car. you are going to get banned again for your holier than thou know it all attitude...
Like I said in the other thread Kevin, fix up your car your way. we'll do ours the right way.

Just for you, the newest mag i have, i will scan in all the cars, and you can tell fr yourself

I know my car isn't true "VIP", but then again most of you guys probably think my car is
too low. If some are all about flushness, I am all about making the car tuck as much rim as possible. I get more of a wow factor out of rim tuck than wheel flushness. In my humble opinion.

i personally am gonna go with a spring drop to start off with. why? because i'd rather have a lower than stock ride and a clean pain job. i'd plan to spend $300 on springs and save my money for a good paint job and then get the coils or air. to me there seems to be a bit of a contradiction as far as luxury is concerned when you have a slammed stance and aggressive fitment on a nice car but only to have a busted paint job. to me that really isn't all that VIP. don't get me wrong, i'm not trying to take anything away from anyone who has less than perfect paint on a daily driven car. it's quite understandable. if there is one thing that all those feature cars in the mags have in common is a clean paint job.
all it boils down to is everyone has different priorities and preferences and interpretations of a style of car tuning (that is essentially unimportant unless you have nothing else in your life) which has no official rule book of what you can or cannot do. stance and fitment are important, but not everything. sure you can have rare, super low offset wheels and ride so low you have to worry about having your aero kit being torn off every time your run over a quarter...but that isn't going to give you nearly enough props as you'd think if your quarter panel is full of dents and the color of your back bumper doesn't match the rest of the car and the aero that you do have on your car isn't painted at all.
and that's just my opinion.

Alot of the owners of the hot vip cars are on Minkara, but they dont argue about it like we do. I chatted to a couple of them when i was there in November and they seemed surprised that the US and the rest of the world is so interested in vip style.
I am pretty sure the reason we argue so much about this is because the style is still so misunderstood. There arent many people in Japan who actively interact with the Japanese enthusiasts, so its all just based on looking at pics in magazines and on websites. Look at drift: lots of people in Japan learning from the originators, and bringing that info back to the rest of us. We dont have that for VIP.
Do hot rodders sit there and argue about whether whitewalls are acceptable on a hotrod? No, because they just do it and they do it right.

Do hot rodders sit there and argue about whether whitewalls are acceptable on a hotrod? No, because they just do it and they do it right.

Edit;
I Tried To Refrain from this Thread but I Couldnt Help My Self. ...
Man, since the beginning of this forum I can remember FLS trying to argue about stance and I always thought he just left because he finally got sick of trying to "fit in" but I suppose he can't sleep at night knowing that he isn't accepted as VIP to the community.
Dude, personally, it's not a big deal at all, just modify your car and do your own thing.
Your car looks ok at that height, just get rid of that nasty lip.
And yea, if we don't care about stance, we're friggin DUB.

I Dont Understand why Everyone Tries to Use "Style" as an Excuse for Not Having Enough Money.
Don't get it twisted there... i considered my G35 VIPstyled but it wasn't due to any excuse on funds either..... I had already invested $18k into the car when it got slammed and that was in owning it for less than a year, and I was on my way to modifying the car to fit the new wider wheels which meant more dough being coughed up.
claiming VIPstyle isn't a copout to doing things cheap.... it's what you are when you have done things the right way no matter what the cost on a car that is not a platform vehicle. just a little knowledge for ya! :giggity:
