Getting tires mounted on your expensive wheels...what to look out for

Say you just bought some 3K brand new wheels and you don't have a regular tire shop to go to.   What kind of machine are you too look out for?   Is there certain machine or type of machine that are better or worse?    I know some of these wheels are mounted differently then regular rims and has to clamp down the lip (reverse).    I've seen a place take out plastic caps that go on the clamps to avoid scratching.   I know certain machines can only go up to certain size diameter rims.   From what I've seen installing tires to stretch is harder then normal especially with low profile tires.    I'm pretty sure some shopd won't even do it since it's just "dangerous" to drive on and worry if anything happens the customer would come back and sue their ass.

The trick is to never mention streching and jus have them mount the tire!
But I would do a research on the shop and find out the history on mounting tires!
I only trust one shop out here and they have a very good resume of tire installs....

I put masking tape on my lips and take my valve caps off (that way they dont forget to give them back).  Any shop could do a minor stretch with basic machines.  Your shouldnt have issues getting them mounted.  Good luck

The guy next door to my shop put 215/45 on my 8.5, no sweat. It was so easy he didn't even ask for anything in return.

Just gotta find someone you can trust and who understands that your wheels are not expendable.

Have them tape up the rim clamps or throw rags over it if they don't have those plastic caps over them.  The thinner the tire, the easier it is to mount on to the wheel.  Mounting a 285/35 on a 10'' is alot harder than 235/35 on a 10''.

What shop do you go to Pancakes? How much do they charge you to flip tires?

see if they have a scratch free policy...that makes it easy...
 
and ask if they use rubber clamps...although its the jackass behind the machine that will most likely scratch your rims...

that would be me.... lol... if they are brand new rims, they should already have a protective tape around the lip. i use the plastic or rubber clamps, and swap the steel head for the plastic one... i usually put shop towels over the clamps just in case, then do work. smallwonder809 is right, wider tires are a bit harder the mount than stretched ones, but stretched ones are harder to inflate. but i got the technique down....

Should I put the paint tape around the lip to be more safe without sorry?

the more tape the better...but make sure you take the tape off before you bead the tire....

Mounter? I hardly know'er!

I only have shops that own a Corghi Artiglio Master do my stuff.

This slick machine actually holds the wheel face down through the center hole of the wheel- nothing touches the rim beads. It has nylon rollers and arms that facilitate tire mounting. 

Top that all off with Road Force balancing and you've got a smooth ride on unmolested wheels.

In Orange County both Shoreline Motoring and Wheel Warehouse have these machines.
Not many shops have the Corghi because it's about $15K.

good lordy lord...I have a shop Dynamic Autosports that is getting their first tire mounting machine...supposedly they went all out on this one...I hope it's the one that you are mentioning.
