Police Raid Car Enthusiast Gathering 2 Generate Revenue...California Love

[B]Police raid Riverside, California parking lot to issue modified car tickets at local car enthusiast gathering.[/B]
 
Using $503,000 in federal and state gas tax revenue to pay for overtime, nine police agencies in Riverside, California sent more than one hundred police officers to surround a gathering of automotive enthusiasts. 
 
Owners of imported sport compact cars had gathered at the Canyon Crossing shopping center on Friday night to [B]swap stories, talk about their passion for cars and show off the latest enhancements to their rides.[/B] At around 11pm police surprised participants by blocking all exits with fifty police cruisers. Officers then began a warrantless search and interrogation operation of the 150 vehicles that were present.
 
[B]"If you're not into street racing, why would you need that?" Riverside Police Traffic Sergeant Skip Showalter asked an enthusiast during a similar crackdown last year. "Why would you want more power going to your car?"[/B]
 
Police issued a total of forty-eight tickets for "engine modifications" with police accusing the owners of the parked vehicles of being street racers. Another fifty tickets were issued for paperwork violations, dark window tinting and lack of a front license plate. The most revenue, however, will be generated from the fees imposed on twenty vehicles that were confiscated. Despite labeling the parking lot raid as taking place at a "street racing venue," [B]Riverside Police offered no evidence that any street racing actually took place.[/B]
 
[B]Across the state, gas tax funds are regularly used to fund similar crackdowns that generate big revenue. In 2004, the California Highway Patrol issued a total of 101,553 "modified car" citations worth $10.5 million according to CHP data obtained by TheNewspaper.[/B]
 
Other law enforcement agencies participating in Friday night's raid included the California Highway Patrol, Riverside County Sheriff's Department, and police from Baldwin Park, Fontana, Irwindale, Moreno Valley, Ontario and Mount San Jacinto Community College.

no they don't.... been to many hot rod meets and the cops just drool over the rides.... including but not always they will ask guys to rev their engines and showboat a bit to "see what that beauty can do"

Yup, I have seen that before and it will just continue to happen.  

sport compact vs. muscle cars
low riders vs. classics/hotrods
sport bikes vs. cruisers/harleys
donk/DUB vs. superlift off-road trucks

Take a wild guess as to which side law enforcement more often than not, turns a blind eye too.  Its a form of profiling taking into account age, race, and relative lack of socio-political power

yeah...its the cost to live in ca..but makes it more fun to see how long you can get away with it...hehehhe....as far as private property meets, our tab event is on private property too, but not just when you leave can they get you, but if they follow someone into the lot with "probable cause", they can come into private property lots, its kinda like a cop walking up to your house and the front door is open, if it looks suspicious and looks like illegal activites might be going down, he can some in and check it out, to make sure theres no "foul" play.
 
We all build knowing what we do is "wrong", and breaking the law and eventually getting caught comes with the territory, you just have to be fearless...lol....if you mod your car, you know the price you pay to roll it and it reflects on how much your ticket is. Its like paying your monthly insurance fees....you set aside money for basically nothing "in case" you get in an accident. When you roll an "illegally modified car" according to the cops, just be prepared to pay the price, and its just like another day, no big surpirses.....or you can move to BFE and have a modded car, where no one will even see it or cops wont even care, even if you died....they probably wouldnt event notice you were dead for weeks....

not to jack the thread, but as far as going green in ca...i got a smart car for my gf and we already slammed it and tossed in a double din tv and hids....next on the list is kit, wheels, [B]itbs[/B], and complementing [B]exhaust[/B]...lol....go green...

cops dont have a quota, it's actually illegal to set a quota for writing tickets.  some officers write 1 ticket a month, where other ones write a grip.  and not all cops are dicks buddy =\  you gotta remember they have families to support, they're just doing their job.  some of the things they do may be bullshit, but hey, how many things in your job are bullshit?  exactly... they're just in the public's eye all the time so they catch a bad rap for it.

Interesting to see its not only australia that gets the whole "lets close off this carpark and check every vehicle in there" treatment! However i am sure our roadrules are stricter when it comes to stuff we have on our cars. Airsus needs an engineering certificate, and is not allowed to drop the car below the lowest legal height (i.e. 10cm), wheels cannot be outside the guards, stretched tyres not allowed etc. 

Its the whole reason I am reluctant to go to car events or anywhere with more than 3 cars in a group

i swear this reminds of back in the early 90's getting sweated by C.R.A.S.H. units just for being young and a minority..... you couldn't do anything without them swooping like 20+ deep to pat everyone down and harrass you. if you were by yourself walking down the street to the store to buy a bag of chips and a coke they would treat you like a criminal, not a suspected criminal, but like you had already been judged and tried. then they sort of calmed downand now they re-emerge as "special raid units" that are formed via a collaboration of various PD's and CHP.... I swear I'm going to buy a '57 Chevy and driving around with a full blown motor bumping Elvis as loud as my ears can take without bleeding, and I guarantee i'll get pulled over to be told "Bitchin' ride dude!" hahahahahahaha bastards

Calling the operation "almost totalitarian," a federal judge says a Houston police plan that led to 278 arrests in a Kmart parking lot almost three years ago was unconstitutional.
The ruling by U.S. District Judge Nancy Atlas allows all 10 lawsuits filed in the wake of the Aug. 18, 2002, mass arrest, and a smaller operation the previous night, to proceed.
The "plan to detain all persons ... with no regard for the existence of open businesses and their customers, is facially unconstitutional," Atlas wrote in an opinion made public this week.
The sweep by police was planned to crack down on illegal street racing, but the lawsuits contend that most of those arrested in the parking lot in the 8400 block of Westheimer were innocent Kmart customers or diners at a nearby Sonic restaurant. Police had arrested 25 people the previous night outside a nearby James Coney Island restaurant.
Most of those arrested were charged with trespassing or curfew violations, but no one was accused of street racing.
In response to public outrage, the city dropped all charges and the Houston Police Department conducted the largest internal investigation in its history, resulting in disciplinary action against 32 officers. Capt. Mark Aguirre was fired for his handling of the raid.
The lawsuits accuse police of brandishing pistols and shotguns, verbally abusing customers and knocking food from diners' hands and off their tables.
The lawsuits allege that those arrested were forced to sit for hours while plastic cuffs cut into their arms, and some people soiled their clothes when denied permission to use restrooms.
Atlas' ruling came in response to the city of Houston's request to be dropped from the lawsuits, contending that the plaintiffs failed to show that the arrests resulted from official policy.
Former Police Chief C.O. Bradford is named in all of the lawsuits, which seek unspecified compensatory and punitive damages, but the names of other officers and city officials listed as defendants vary among the suits.[/QUOTE]

Yo, so they did the same thing up in Nor Cal on Sunday.... Or Last night. At the local Sunday Starbucks meet on Lawrence Expressway and El Camino Real. Police blocked off the exits stopping everyone going in and out of the parking lot. Cops on bikes, cars, SUV's going up and down the streets with in like a mile radius of the starbucks going in all different directions. Cops walking the parking lot inspecting everyones cars, even some high performance cars that were all stock from what I hear. All the cops out there were, CHP.

Would help if there weren't people in those groups doing stupid shit like revving their blast pipes or running no front plates. Not saying every one is to blame and the cops are justified, but there are things that can be done.

But that's just it..... in Cali there is no need to have anyone do those things anyways. As long as you are in an import or SpoCom with wheels, tint, stickers, and dropped, or any combination of these and that's enough for them

Maybe so, I don't have the same perspective because it's never been a problem for me yet
