z32tt brake upgrade - G50

does anyone have a write up or tips about how to go about this, cuz i dont have wheels to throw on here yet and the 15's dont look like they will fit with these calipers lmk. my thinking is that since q45 calipers ans z32 fit on s13 they should be interchangeable on these cars as well. lmk what you think

Z32 brakes do fit on a G50. Its been done. Search on NICO's Q45 thread I believe.

For using the stock 15's...I don't know. I know that on S13's, when people use Z32 brake setups, I've seen people use the stock 15" SE wheels.

i really doubt you'll have offsst clearance. z32s are very bulky because they are 4 piston. shouldn't be an issue with the diameter though.

*edit - you'll also need conversion lines. they do not have the same type of line bolts.

not sure about the rear... there were too many issues with my car to even think about swapping the rear.

Sweet! I am going to do this as the next mod to my Y33, should everything be about the same? I want to do the calipers, adapters and 350z 12.75" track rotors front and rear.

the 350z calipers are bigger than the 300z tt? i found the nico thread on the five lug swap, however for the rear do i have to use the 300z brake bracket or just throw the calipers right onto the Q

i was gonna put my z32 brakes on my q(g50) this weekend but got lazy...ive had this writeup forvever saved on my comp...check it out

Here's my parts list.
4 Brembo blanks (brand new)
Z32 30mm calipers
OEM pads
1 big and 1 small bottle of valvoline synpower brake fluid
Caliper grease
Braided SS Z32 240 conversion lines OR You can use the factory lines*(SEE NOTE AT END)
Speed bleeders
Started with the rear, and everything went smoothly... The hard line fittings are on tight so use an impacty wrench if you have it... The rear conversion lines are the same as the Q45 lines except with a shorter banjo bolt... They use a banjo fitting but the seat of the bolt has the inverted flare...
An important step here is the bolts are just ever so slightly too long and mine leaked. That said, if you use 3 copper washers (one on the bolt head side, and 2 on the caliper side) the bolt won't bottom out and leak.
Remember to orient so that the bleeder is on the TOP... There's no difference left to right except where the bleeder is.!!!
That being said, theres really nothing special about the rear brakes, everything went right on. Be sure to use plenty of grease. Grease everything, wherever the pad contacts something.
Now on to the fronts. This is where a little bit of skill is required. Some people suggested removing that heat sheild, but i didnt see an easy way to do that. I decided to just cut mine. Youll see where it sort of curves around and theres a little tab. I just cut that so it was flat and it worked perfect, with plenty of clearance on both sides.
Put a jack under each control arm to simulate the suspension being laden to help align the fitting.
Overall, this was definitely a good mod to do if you have 17in wheels or more (for clearance). I did the math, and doing this upgrade will cost about as much (slightly less) as rehabbing your Q45 brakes, and after that, will be substantially cheaper as the brembo blanks are about 1/2 price of what OEM rotors are.
With the double thickness in the rear and 2mm extra in the front that has to make things last longer. These are the brakes that should have been on the car, and had it not been for wheel clearance issues, I think Nissan would have used these to begin with! **NOTE: If you want to use the factory lines, simply remove the bolt from the banjo fitting and cut it down a few threads.. In retrospect, I probably would have gone this route rather than the SS lines, due to fitment issues...

From my research, they should fit, I think it's about as straight forward as the G50 swap. We'll see though cause I'm about to start buying all the parts I need.

If you think about it, some 240 people do a Q45 brake upgrade from Y33 and if the Q45 brakes can swap onto a 240 and so can the Z32 brakes, should be no problem. Either way, I guess I'll find out soon.

i have NEVER heard of anyone using the y33 q45 brakes on an s13...only g50 q45 and z32 calipers. i guess try it out. if you can find out what the space is between the two bolts i can tell you if they are going to bolt up or not. i have some z32 calipers in my room i can measure out for you.

Ill look forward to your setup. I also want to upgrade the brakes for better braking but mostly for looks. I think i read that z32s or GT-R brakes on y33s will work but to most people its not worth it because the Q45 brakes are plenty good. I plan on upgrading this but not right away since other aspects of my car need more attention but keep us posted!

Thanks for offering that urmyhero4now, I'll prolly take you up on it. In the worst case, I can get adapters made, and if it still doesn't work, no biggie, just re-sell the stuff.

I swear I remember reading on NICO or somewhere that it works, but I haven't gone on NICO in ages, too much OEM attitude and anyone who mods is "destroying the worlds greatest car" lololol.....

i misuderstood this too but after some research i kind of figured out that when the s chassis guys say "q45 brakes" they are referring to the g50.

this leads me to believe that the z32 calipers will have different spacing than the y33.:

Yokota has proved that the Z32/JDM S14A/R33 GTS Brakes all bolt up to the y33. To make matters even more twisted the EVO Front Brembos bolt on then you can use 350Z Track rotor and the rear you can use an STI Brembo Caliper with a 3mm shim between the spindle mount and caliper and EVO Rear rotor. Its been done all over Zilvia and its easy to do as well. Plus the EVO and STi lines are the same as the S chassis meaning they are the same as the Q.

Front: STi Brembo calipers / Evo rotors
Rear: STi Brembo calipers / Z32 rotors
Brake lines: Brembo brake lines for STi Brembos

I also believe the SRT8 brembos and the Cadillac CTS V calipers bolt up!

EVO rotors
Front = 320mm
Rear = 300mm

STI
Front = 326mm
Rear = 316mm

Another interesting note is that the EVO front rotors are 32mm wide whereas the STI fronts are 30mm wide. They use the same Brembo caliper but the EVO actually uses 1mm skinnier brake pads! so you can use EVO pads on STI and just be short a bit of pad life(Ive dont this on my STI) but you cant use STI pads on an EVO unless you turn the rotors down 2mm. Some companies, Like EBC, only make one part number for EVO and STI pads and just cheat STI guys out of 1mm on each pad, lol.

One other difference in the fronts, besides the diameter, is the hat height(offset) the STI(53mm) is almost identical to the 300ZX(54mm) whereas the EVO is 43.5mm. Since Im designing custom brackets anyways, I can make them to whatever offseet they need to be to fit, though all things being equal, the EVO rotors will move the Brembo caliper about 10mm closer to the wheel than the STI or Z32 rotors, so that could be a clearance problem depending on what wheel your running, the best combo might be EVO rear rotors and 05+ STI(%X114) front calipers to keep the offset as close to stock as possible, and they're 6mm bigger to boot!
but to add to that EVO calipers will work in the front but the rears dont bolt up, only the STI calipers bolt up in the rear

Here is the CTS V brake setup:

For a functional E-brake from the Z32, this is so simple!!!, and using
the STI rear caliper all you need is, did I say simple?,
the Z32 rotor and the STI calpier fits like a charm.
After I installed the Z32 setup today, thanks to SPLPARTS, I had a little thought.
the Evo rotor diam is 300mm which allows a perfect fit of the STI capliper with the OE mounting points.
the Stock STI rotor width is 20mm.
Now the Z32 rotor is 297mmx18mm. That is 3mm less in total diam and 2mm
less wide.
I mounted the STI caliper onto a complete Z32 rear conversion and what do you know, It fits PERFECTLY! no need for a spacer for the mounting holes.
The pad covers the rotors surface perfectly and centers perfectly. The shop I work with, the one that built my brackets seen in previous posts, confirmed that as long as I keep an eye on the pad width The 1mm per side difference is not an issue at all! The resident engineer did some calculation about some stuff I fail to understand and said It will work no problem as long as I pay attention to the rear pad width or just get 1mm thicker pads to start with.
Now that I found a working solution which keeps the e-brake from the Z32 and uses the Z32 rotor, I just need to get new pads and some braided rear lines and voila! a complete STI caliper conversion with front evo rotors+pads and Z32 rear rotor with a functional E-brake. It will be a couple of weeks until I get some more time to change the setup yet again but the result is worth the wait. Since braking already improved greatly with the rear Z32 assembly I believe it will even be better with the STI caliper just because it is a little bit larger and matches the front STI caliper. Did the calculations and it should be better but tests will be performed to verify. G|ot the GPS to measure distances and will also get a g-meter just for the sake of it.
Sorry for the long post but thought you should know.

Sorry for the bad pic, cell phone and it got dark.

They should mount directly to your rear spindles. But you also need to remember to pick up stainles steel lines.

BTW. I have some rear Z32 rear calipers for sale. Hit me up if you are interested.

ricky...from what im being told with the z32 mesh you need a 15mm spacer to fit the stock wheels
and yea the z32 calipers bolt right up in the rear...

you dont need to use stainless steel braided lines you can use the stock ones....you just need to mod the banjo fittings a bit

vipflame...if i remember correctly grant(yokotas13) was using s13 spindles thats why they bolted up.

fls...anytime just let me kno

and for you ricky ill put my brakes on next weekend.. ill take some pics and do a small writeup pic for pic.

Well, I finally got all the parts, and of course it doesn't all fit as easily as you'd think. First off, the 30mm Z rotors are about 1/2 too small in OD, so I think the 350z track rotors will fit (my mechanic said the stock front Q rotors are the correct OD and even the same thickness as the Z ones so they'll be on there for now). The front brake hoses are too short, not sure what I'm gonna do with that issue, and he had to cut the dust shield on the rear to make the caliper fit. I gotta head over there and see what we can do. Looks like my car may be sitting for a few days, what a drag.

yup thats what has been stopping me for awhile. i dont remember for sure if its the front or rear hose bolts that go into the caliper i believe its called the banjo bolt..but its too long on ours. and spacers are needed to be put on to make it fit properly. i will do it after hella flush. i dont have time right now.

Yeah stock Q calipers use banjo bolt, the R/Z32 use a threaded nipple. No worries though, I got all the parts and should be picking her up in a bit. Fortunately, there's an Earl's shop (Store #1 actually) about 3 miles from me, so I went in and had to buy the parts to build our own SS lines. Bought the SS line, and all the fittings needed, so front brake lines are Earl's SS and done. The rears I got came with some new SS lines and they fit perfect. And the Q uses the same type of internal drum parking brake so none of the 240 issues as far as that goes. The rear is pretty much direct swap but you gotta cut the dust shields to fit the new calipers.

So I swapped the ZXtt rotors for Y33 Q rotors slot / drilled since they're also 30mm apparently and they're 11.75 VS the 11.25 TT rotors (the Q rotors are same size as 350z track edition). Got this stuff at R1 Concepts and they're very cool, easy to deal with and no hassle on swapping out the rotors even though it's been over a month since I bought the Z rotors.

I did a full write up of all parts needed for the swap on LJC. I'll prolly post it on here too once I get all the Earl's part numbers.

so wait the fronts you need earls lines but the rears dont need anything? you just used the earls lines anyways or can you use the stock lines.

I got SS lines front and rear. The rear are Z32tt SS lines, front are custom built. The Z/R32 calipers use a nipple front and rear vs. the banjo bolt. The SS lines for the rear came with the calipers I bought.
