shoez's VIP Clothing Ideas

so lately, i've been thinking a lot about some bold new designs for VIP apparel. serious props to all of the clothing designers on the site, but i'm not a big fan of the simple black-and-white designs with swirling cursive script. i love lots of color and big patterns on my gear!

therein lies a dilemma: our VIP culture is centered around refinement and class, so my addiction to shouty clothing doesn't bode well. my goal is to create a blend between the two without tarnishing the bippu namesake.

so here goes, this was one of the first designs that came to my mind recently:

and i am [u][b]by no means[/b][/u] a professional, (this was one of the first times that i have used PS) so any kind of criticism is welcome.

VIP doesnt have to be elegant and classy, thats just the image that is sold to the western world. In Japan, the vippers wear b-boy gear, funky jeans, t-shirts etc... Something like that could go down pretty well IMO...

Speak to Zion, i believe he has the facilities to print something like that off

The reason you see one color designs is because the cost to produce multi colored designs is expensive...
 
IF you heat transfer you only can do 4-5 layerd designs with vinyl...
 
or you can Print Directly to Color but the cost is greater becuase now your using ink and have to print at a high reselution...using a deskjet printer....
 
or you can enter into sublimation printing which is even more expensive like quadruple the cost of lazer or deskjet printing..but becuase of the type of ink and you need special paper..
 
here is a cuople of Heat transfers not sublimation prints I did along with using a black vinyl for the lettering...
 
I sell these at $35 starting and the bigger the size of the image and more ink the more the price goes up..This is for customize shirts ONLY...not really a type of job to mass produce..

Now you take this same design to a silk screener you would be looking at at least 10 screens..each screen they charge a set up fee..anywhere from $25-$75 I have been quoted per screen..then there is a set up for the ink...different colors cost more to print...and if you want a cost effective shirt you have to buy in bulk..not just 10-20 -30 shirts at least a couple of hundred to make it proffitable for you and affordable for your buyer...
 
 
There is alot that goes into this..I have been in the business of graphics and t-shirt design for quite some time and got tired of subcontracting work out so I have expanded my business to produce customized shirts..not in heavy quantities though..sooon enough I will get there..largest order I will take is 100-200 if the design is simple..if its complex shit forget it...one at a time or at the most 25-50..
 
gots to start small and work your way up...
 
El president could offer you more advice and black on black I believe is sending his work to have done..you might want to hit him up about current market prices..
 
and not every design you come up with will be duable at a decent price...food for thought and hope this helps!

sounds crucial! if your stuff is a hit in japan, it can pretty much make it in any other major country (at least that is the case with the U.S.)

thanks for the words Rich. i had no idea that printing tees could get so expensive. but in the event that i did start producing clothing, i would prefer if it would stay on the boutique level, which means 150-200 prints MAX for each design. but i'm still a sophomore in highschool, so i have plenty of time for planning in the event that this actually got off the ground. :shrug:

Does your school have the facilities to crank out sum work? I did the road crew shirts for a Def Jam/Beastie Boys stop when I was in highschool...used their equip to make 30-40 shirts and a couple jackets.:biggthumpup:

do your thing. every designer will have there own style and its more than likely that someone will be feeling it. when i first proposed the idea of making some gear i had 1 bright design that didn't get quite the same response as my others even though i liked it. when you add in the cost and complexity of printing multi color designs it just wasnt worth it. its cool to do your own thing, but on a business level (even small business) you have to cater to your market or develope a new one.
 
i also like bright colors that follow current trends in clothing and footwear, but if i were to do something like that i probably wouldn't focus on the vip lifestyle. i actually was very close to starting a clothing label about a year ago but couldn't figure out where to go after the design phase.

i really appreciate all of the advice man. there's no way that i would even think of launching this without making sure that there's interest in the product, and until then i plan on stepping up my photoshop skills. :)

thats cool but kinda hard to read..and if you think about all the screens for all the colors involved probably would not be very cost efficient to make...Remember not every design will be able to produce..I see many colors envolved in this shirt and at this point I dont think silkscreening would be an option..you most likely would have to print on thermal transfer paper and plotter to cut the design and then use a heat press to transfer the image onto the shirt..

truth be told, i'm not even thinking about practicality at this point. these are just some ideas i need to get out of my head that i've been kicking around for a while.

Understood...words of advice though start thinking practical right now..beeing that you are younger and insterested in this business. It is better that you start thinking practical now then later other wise lots of waisted time on designs that wont make it to procuction..Plus it will help your designs in the end...allways plan ahead...

i disagree. i say whats important right now is getting comfortable with design in general and learn the software. the more you can do with whatever program you choose the easier it is to make something look the way you want/need it to.

Oh yeah he has to learn the software no doubt...what I am saying is when he is thinking about designs in his head he needs to be realistic on what process he will need to use for the end result..This newest shirt design could not be silkscreened....
 
So if you are going to have shirt done using silk screen one must think of how to have that idea made into reality..
 
If one is looking for vinyl one must think of how to get that concept into reality
 
and the the option is printing on heat transfer paper/sublimation printing and then one can do way more than silk screen or vinyl...
 
So that is my point..plan ahead no matter what method of printing will be used..Its allways better to get in good habbits now then to have to change your habbits later...
 
By all means I am all for cracking out designs left and right becuase you will learn new methods of doing things but at the same time keep in mind what can and cant be acomplished using certain methods..
 
even when business was slow or I was focused in real estate..I never stop designing and thats one of the reasons I work well in my software and able to keep up with many designers in the industry..

You can't cater to everyone's needs!!
 
I have had many many clients and most of them have been loyal..while some of them just did not like anything I did..I could not please them and they were very hard on my designs I submitted to them. You have to some comments with a grain of salt..and learn that while some is constructive criticism others you just wont please. Your design style will not fit into what they are looking for..
 
So if you don't fall in love with a design it will be easier to hear and listen to what your client is saying and be able to make the adjustments they need with out compromissing your integrity..
 
Good luck and thats all I have to say...you have some time to explore ans see what direction you want to head in..I have been drawing most of my life. I am 32 soon to be 33 and still learing new tricks and shortcuts in PS and Illustrator..I have been active in the graphic industry for over 10 years and proffessionaly for about 8 years..

Interesting shirt designs. I'm into the first one but this one caught my eyes. I wasn't even reading the words just staring at the cars. :biggthumpup: I wonder how it would look like with a black outline around the letters. Nice job mike.

i'm putting the finishing touches on a similar design without the pictures in the background (just white text over a navy base) that should look pretty official when it's finished. :thumbsup:

nah..i like the other one. you can actually use two colors. maybe u can put the letters white while use the inside car faces grey using portrait style. i dont think this style would work w/ iron on. you will need to use silk screen.
