Those are here in the US now my friend! There is a SMART dealership near where I work in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Here is the link for the car with the GSXR engine, it pretty sweet: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=9072236535251471450&q=smart+car

Re: smart cars...

They are absolutely everywhere in Europe, and with good reason too. Seems that everyone and their dog owns a car and parks it on the streets in European cities. They are TINY! Yet its common to see them flying down a motorway at 120+km/h.

Funny thing is, they arent even the smallest cars i saw over there!! There is one thing which cant be more than 1m wide and less than 2m long. 2 seats (side by side, although i fail to see how anything other than a pair of underdeveloped ethiopians could fit in there!). They sound like they are powered by a 200cc single cylinder engine putting along they are the funniest thing i ever saw. Not classified as a car overthere so they can drive in bike lanes, without registration, and by 14 or 15yr olds

Back to the Smart Cars, i saw one in Rome i believe that was a Brabus tuned Smart car. Deep dish rims on the back and a very sporty look. I took a few snaps and i'll post them when i find them...

In Australia they are overpriced compared to small Japanese and Korean cars (Echo, Mirage, Colt, Getz, Accent), so only the poser innercity wannabe do-gooders drive them

Really? I've seen a good number of them rolling around the streets of Phoenix. When I was at the dealership, one of the sales reps said that they were not available in certain states;
and if I remeber correctly, California is one of them. They are also not availible in my homestate Maryland.

Re: smart cars...

Might change your mind when you see the MSRP on the Smartcar! As a comparison, they are around $20k + taxes and registration costs. The Toyota Echo 3 door hatch sells for $14k + taxes etc. The only advantage i see with them is that they can be parked in smaller car parks and may have marginally better fuel economy than a typical small hatch.

limited boot space, only 2 seats and even though Australians are not as obsessed with big cars as the US, you still get funny looks from people when you drive one (i know, because i give the funny looks myself!)

Re: smart cars...

Bleh, I can see how they would suit some people but it's definitely not for me. Too small and impractical. I can't picture backing that out of my stall buried in snow, in -25C weather.

Re: smart cars...

We've had them in Canada for a year or two now and are pretty popular. I see a few every day. There are even decidicated "small car" spots for smart cars that are half the size of a regular parking spot. We only have the diesal version but both gas and diesal versions will be in North Amercia shortly.

It will be interesting to see if US buyers will ditch their large vehicles to save on gas.
