Fresh out the Oven
Hello everyone. I'm new to this forum. Looks to be a good place to learn a few new things and maybe teach some of you something new too.
I sold my 240 and picked up this bad boy...haha
SC300...bone stock and mostly descent. The paint is ok for now, except that spot of missing clear coat on the right quarter. The interior is wasted! haha But no matter, I work at an upholstery shop. Other than that, she drives GREAT! Can't complain too much...got her for only $1k.
My plans for the lex are HUGE wheels(prob 22's), full custom interior(materials are undecided, but expect top quality), all metal wide fenders and major pull on rear quarters(to fit the 22's), paint(after all body work is complete), and lastly...BAGS!
Since I can't post in the real forum, I guess I'll start a build thread in 101. Bags, wheels and some interior stuff will come first. As soon as this check clears for my old car.
And just to spice up this post...here's a timing cover I powder coated for a local shop. It's going on a Daytona Blue 350z, he told me to match that color best I could.
So, this is what I came up with...CANDY BLUE over a CHROME BASE.
Sorry for the crappy cell phone pics.

Look guys, I just want bigger wheels all of you...haha While still almost laying frame.
My best friend/boss already has an SC400 on bags and 22's laying the fuck out. I'm building the car around a set of "dub" brand 22's, BUT I have a set of Asanti's off a 7 series bmw. 22x9.5 front with a 3.5 inch lip and 22x11 rear with a 5.5 inch lip.
Keep in mind that in front im mounting 235/35 and on the rear 265/30's. Trust me...it looks awesome. If it's not your cup of tea, that's cool, but just like your signature elpresidente...I'm thinking outside the box.

Thinking outside of the box is one thing when it comes to mods and custom work....... totally disregarding the style that this forum is built around and which so many of us hold to heart as a tradition is just flagrantly insulting. I know it may seem a bit harsh to have so many people jump on you all of a sudden about this, but we go through this week in and week out. El Pres is a renowned MODIFIER, meaning he doesn't just do bolt ons like most, he actually modifies things. DriftGirl is the person to go to when trying to modify SC's, mind you she may not be the end all know all on the subject, but if you were ever going to run into one...... she would be the closest thing to it.
As stated above, we are not DUBstylecars.com we are VIPstylecars.com and we take pride in this..... Welcome to the boards and please understand that with remarks like that you will be opening yourself up to these comments. Addedly, you'll prevent ourself from graduating to the regular forum.

Wow. I didn't think i'd get so many haters right off the bat. I'm not sure what "remark" I gave to insult you. I am truly sorry.
I have nothing but love for you guys and this style of car. I'm merely pushing the envelope. Two years ago 20" we're TOO BIG. From what I've researched online and in Jap mags...Vip guys over there are always trying to go bigger and better while keeping within the style itself. My car WILL have a clean body, airbags, beautiful upholstery and big 3-piece wheels.
This is my inspiration...I know they're not 22", but it will be styled this way. A 22" is only one inch bigger on either side than the 20" on the car above.

This a really bad cell phone pic of my friends car. These wheels are only being used to build the car...the actual wheels are in the mail.
Laid out...with about 3 inches from the ground to spare the kit.
You see, it doesn't look bad :)

^^^^ IMO those wheels look waaaayyy to big for that car. It is hard to tell because of the picture, but something a bit smaller would make the car look a ton more aggressive. In the end build you car the way that you want to build it, just don't expect us to keep our mouths shut:rules:

We're not haters.. you're just preaching to an empty church.
This is a vip car forum. The cars you're referring to have WAY bigger fender wells and most have also been radiused (fender arches raised). The only ones rolling on 22's are newer LS's and the few 300C's which are borderline DUB themselves. It's just they have huge fender wells, you do not. In addition..fitment is more key in most cases...that is some serious battleship on your friends car and to me it looks like something you'd push with your hand (hotwheels toy car) rather than drive in.
Don't take offense, it's just not our style and it's also not THEIR (Japan) style. I hope it doesn't evolve into that. I cringe when people say I have DUB's on my Jag..when they're actually 19's. On bigger welled cars..20's look natural..as do 21's on a new LS.
We're just trying to help you understand what vip is and what it's not. That is not vip...it is DUB.

The fitment is perfect when the car is raised...it tucks in when lowered. The wheel is never more than an 1/8th inch from the quarter. If you guys think it's dub, then it's dub...no point in arguing. This is how I'm building my car. If it's not your taste(which we all know it's not), that's fine.

i agree that 22s are on the big side, but i also think you should do your own thing. if you can lay on 22s and make it look good then cool. i would definitely recommend some fender work (radius) to frame the wheels. judging by the pics it might look ok.
you seem to have a pretty good resume and i'm sure you know cars, but take some time to learn about vip. i have a feeling you ended up here kind of similar to how i did. i had a good idea of what i wanted my car to look like, saw a couple vip rides that looked similar, and said "thats whats up". once you get a little more familiar with it you might switch up your plan a little.
if not you might just build a sick car. everything doesn't have to be vip styled.

A) we don't hate you or aren't hating on you either (just look at some of the rides of the members posting on here... hardly any reason to hate)
B) we're all for individuality, but wouldn't you be better off in a like minded forum? I wouldn't go on a Mustang forum trying to get props for boosting my civic...... know what i mean?
C) if anything you said ruined someone's day here.... they need to STFU and GTFO

^ The thing about bigger wheels on this type of car is that it take away from the super super aggressive look you achieve by going with a smaller wheel with well though out offsets. That is the look we are into, so it may only be rims, but it does give the car a whole different feel.
In the end it doesn't matter, I still wanna see pics of another bagged SC.

another thing to think about, and something most vipers take exrtreme pride in, is wheel selection. you say you have some dub ad asanti wheels (both decent/good wheels imo), but a huge part of it is using (mad) jdm (tyte) wheels. then you have to look at if theres even anything available in 22s. i know a lot of companies have jumped on the 21" train for the newer lexuses but 22" is slim pickins.
an sc layed out on some nice vip style 21s with radiused fenders would actually be pretty sick the more i think about it. the question is would it be sicker than the same car on 19s. theres an overall image to think about rather than just going big for big's sake,
some guys around here tend to stick to tradition and try to follow whats going on in japan (not saying its a bad thing) but i personally think the u.s. has a lot to offer and some good can be had by blazing our own path. however, before you do all that you should get a good grasp on the traditional route. i gaurentee once that happens your views will be at least slightly shifted.

Im not a huge fan but I would like to see what ever you come up with. Sounds like you have a game plan and ways of getting it done. Good luck
Although that SC400 with 22's in the pic looks laid out, its not by our definition. Laid out means touching the floor. Now if he would of cut up his quarter panels, remove the rear seats, tube the inner fenders some more, he would be able to lay it out on 22's without tucking and that would be an accomplishment in its self. IMO, still too big for an SC300/400
Laid out on 20's would be the way to go

I agree with widebody_Q. 20's are the biggest you could go on this car, and not make it look 'DUB style'.

I'm waiting for the final product. How soon till we see pics of your car?
22's should be hotness... it may be "DUB" but it can be pulled off hard parked on air.
Sometimes I think 20's are too big for my LS...yeah right! If I was on air, i'd contemplate 22's. According to Luda... you can't lose on 22's.

See, that's just it..your "dumped" height is our ride height..because the wheels are too big and taking up too much of the height you lost with the air. Your ride height would look more like a donk than even DUB at that point. WidebodyQ said exactly what I feel...20's would be best with a slight radius..or 19's with unprocessed fenders.
It is fine for you to build what you want, but it's not fine to declare it is something that it's not. Vip is not as simple as you're making it out to be..and that's okay because you're obviously new to it. All we're asking is to think things through if you're planning to tout it as vip styled. Currently it's not. Wheels make or break the car.
That select few have far larger wheel wells. You can't even make a comparison..apples and oranges.

An unprocessed fenders or quarter panels yields garbage fitment and wheel selection. I haven't seen any real "VIP" cars with unmolested fenders or quarter panels to accommodate the big, low offset wheels they run. The quarters on the car in the picture i posted before, have been pulled only an inch and a half and are sightly radius cut...and that was to fit the 19" that were on there before. 19" were meh...so we went bigger.
He can raise the car about 1 inch and drive around. My ride hight will be what ever I want, thanks to the bags and they'll also help me get over speed humps and up high angle drive ways.
I already gave up a few posts back...I'm no longer building a VIP car...apparently. I'm building my own style of car and posting the build on this site, for your enjoyment. Please stay tuned for EXTREME CAR BUILDING! Here on VIP 101!!!

Wow, I would like to see what the final product looks like. You're gonna have to do a ton of modifications to make 22"s look good and not out of place on an SC. I just hope you don't try to be all different and do what this dude did:

I have nothing but love for you guys and this style of car. I'm merely pushing the envelope. Two years ago 20" we're TOO BIG. From what I've researched online and in Jap mags...Vip guys over there are always trying to go bigger and better while keeping within the style itself. My car WILL have a clean body, airbags, beautiful upholstery and big 3-piece wheels.

This is my inspiration...I know they're not 22", but it will be styled this way. A 22" is only one inch bigger on either side than the 20" on the car above.
funny

Oh no!!!!!!!! That's it I guess...now I can't build a car at all.
Come on, grow up guy. I told you what I'm doing...deal with it. Don't try and nick pick my ideas. I don't do it to any of you, no matter how dumb some of your ideas are(not saying that all of your ideas are dumb). I keep my mouth shut and watch you fail. If I fail, so be it. But, at least I failed my way.
I'm not trying to pick any E-fights...just ending one.
Back on topic...This damn check needs to get here!!! I need to order my bags so I can start the body work.
I'm thinking the paint will be Jet Black with either a Blue or Purple pearl. That should be classy enough, right?
For the interior...I'm thinking a light rust color...almost orange, but not quite...more of an earthy tone. I know the owner of Gemico(a huge dash kit manufacturer), so I asked him about a black burl wood kit...he said, "no problem I'll bring by a sample." When he does, I'll snap a quick pick to show you guys.
That's it for now...it's get drunk time:dance:

Fair enough. I for one am not e-fighting. I have been making suggestions and describing a few points so they are better understood. I even said to build what you want. Just don't confuse it for what it's not. Simple as that. Try not to get too worked up over it...it's just cars after all. (but man do I love them)

I say, go for th big wheels if thats what you like. You really dont have to listen to anyone here if you dont want to. Although someone said on here that you are preaching to an empty church, which is kinda true. People on here are very arrogant and will tell you if they dont like what you are doing. soooo on that note. Do what you think is best for you. just be aware if you share what you are doing, be ready to have everyone on here that is "high on the totem pole" tell you what is on their mind, and how you wont be following the "VIP style"
goodluck with it.

I never really said that I didn't consider getting 20". That was actually my plan at first, until I saw my friends SC on 22". When he told me that he fit 22" on there I was like "Aww...For realz? Why'd you go and do that?" Then I saw it...wow, it looks wild, but in a good way.
I'm a wheel *****, so I'm sure 20" will end up on there one day or another, but I'm gonna have the 22" first. All of the body work that's planned will work just fine with smaller wheels, so it shouldn't look weird or out of place.

i hope i wont see a stock sc with 22s. i hope you are getting in on the auto couture group buy at carson. without that kit. ur goin to be sitting pretty high, and ur ideas of layed out, will never happen.
i think the only reason your not getting the approval from everyone is that your on the wrong forum. do you even know what vipstyle is?

i've been on your side of the argument before and i am still doing a lot of stuff that is generally not accepted by the vsc community. i also know the level of general understanding from ppl in the customizing community is far greater than your average "drop your car off" joe. this can lead to issues because it comes with the "i know what i'm doing" attitude. you're going to catch a lot of heat more because of your attitude than because of your project. once you start walking your talk ppl may or may not come around depending on your results.
on the flip side, this is a vip style community. there are styling guidelines that should be respected even if you don't choose to follow. you can say "f**k y'all, i'm gonna do it my way", but if it's f**k us then why even be here? i did the same thing you are doing at one point and said "fine then, its not a vip style build but i'm gonna hang out anyway". truth is i do consider mine a vip styled build with outside influences, which most have accepted (publicly at least) by now. vip has just happened to kind of go the same direction as i was as the build has drug on, so i kind of got lucky.
i gaurentee if you hang around for long enough and learn your style is going to change. coming into a new style thinking that you already know what you are going to do and it will fit perfectly is just ignorant (i have made this mistake too).
on the switching up wheels tip: its not that easy. if you build your car to have the type of fitment and stance that we go for on 22s dropping 2 inches off the wheel size is gonna look bad to the point where your car will be layed out with wheel gap, nevermind ride hieght. if you built it for 20s/19s you could probably get away with throwin some 2s on there and tuckng em, but not the other way around.

My suggestions are as follows:
1) READ - we have various stickied threads here that are meant to be very enlightening when it comes to the this LIFEstyle, read them and end all doubts in your mind as to whether a yugo can be VIPstyled or not.(<<<<<I made a joke for reference no offence to any yugo owners)
2) LISTEN - We're not saying we don't want you here at all, hell i'm interested in seeing what you can do interior-wise since you work at an upholstery shop!!
3) DON'T COMPARE APPLES AND ORANGES - this refers to coming on here and saying "i'm gonna DUB my car and show you how VIP it can be" not only can it NOT be done succesfully but why???? hahhahahaha
anyways can't wait to see your first interior thread man!

You're going about this all wrong...and your thinking is skewed. We didn't say you couldn't do it, we said it wouldn't be vip...and it won't be. You're not being a rebel, you're just building a DUB styled car on a vip style forum. You're not getting one by on us. Like I said, build your car...show us, that's all fine and good, just don't tout it as vip when it's not. I'm not going to reiterate this again.

Yeah KLD with that wheel size and the way you describe how it is going to look while laid out sounds more like a mini trucker type deal. Some people said you cant body drop an s 10 lay frame and run 24's. It's been done and it looks damn good. But that is in regards to mini truck standards. The enthusiasts on here are very by-the-book people who follow certain guidelines and if you stray too far you're going to get chewed out. I know from experience because I said "odd car for vip wheels" when I really was only concerned about vip type wheel fitment and how to apply it to my car. Yeah, not fun. I really do want to see this finished and I'm bookmarking this. Oh yeah and the paint code for 350z Daytona blue is B17.

You have so many guys here trying to give you good advice. They know what their talking about and between them have countless cars and years of experience to be able to give you proper advice. I understand the wanting to be different and push the envelope but sometimes there's just too much. For that car those wheels will dwarf the rest of the car. This is all just IMO and ultimatly you will do what you want because your the one who will be represented by your car. But hopefully you can do an aggressive offset and it will help with the look so it wont look gangstered.

no way he can fit any kind of nice offset with 22s. he will have to roll around donk like just to turn. i guess where he is from VIP means non sporty...
rule number one is fitment. specs on the wheels ur planing to run?

Thanks, but they don't make powder in that exact color. I could've gotten it color matched, but thats way too expensive. I ended up shooting a chrome base with a candy blue top coat, which came out perfect!
"no way he can fit any kind of nice offset with 22s."
WRONG. SC's have giant wheel wells, I'll be fine.
Front - 22x9.5 with a 3.5" lip with 235/30
Rear - 22x10.5 with a 5.5" lip with 245/30
I'll get you guys the actually offsets later...they're the same as a 7 series bmw. If I have to raise it to turn, it's as easy as a button.
Please don't perceive things the wrong way. I am trying to soak in all of you're input and advice. But, on the other hand...I'm pretty sure none of you have ever tried to run 22" on an SC. I understand that is not "VIP" to your standards, but it is pretty boss.
That's it. It's not "VIP"...I'll call it BOSS Style...now there's no reason to argue anymore.
I'm off to the shop to start beating the crap out of the quarters! Whoo!!

Thanks a lot for the support. I'll be posting the entire build from start to finish here. Maybe by the end of the build(hopefully sooner), I'll be on the big boy side of the forum =)
I called Lexus earlier to find out the price on the factory LS460 fog lights to put into my kit(when I start to build it)....$218.85!!!!!!!!!!!EACH!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyone know of anywhere else I can find these cheaper?
Also if anyone needs any help or has any questions regarding Upholstery or Powder Coating, Please don't hesitate to ask.

Ebay has the fogs for about 160-190 each. Not as bad as a dealer price as you think.
Oh, and those interiors are BANGIN!

Some unexpected bills came up, so I wont be able to buy my kit right away :( making those fogs useless.
But, for a bit of good news...I'm ordering my bags tomorrow!
I may even get them tomorrow, if my buddy has them in stock.
I also bought most of the materials for the interior. Rust color leather for the seats and matching vinal to wrap EVERYTHING else inside the car. I'll be using navy stitching to compliment the paint(jet black w/blue pearl). I still have to order my carpet. Not sure what color to go with...Rust or Black? Opinions?

Haha...I'll miss the 240, but I can always buy another one later on. Plus, it was bone stock, so it wasn't a bad move on my part  It was time for me to grow up a little bit.

No thanks...I'm not going back for awhile. Good luck on selling both so you can get your VIP on!
My bags are paid in full, as of today:biggthumpup: My buddy brought my 5 gallon tank, the two front bags, switches with the 9-wire, relays and two Viair gauges this afternoon! Just waiting on the rear strut bags, adjustable struts for the front, air lines, Viair 480c compressor and all the fittings. All that stuff should hopefully be in my hands by next week. I'll post pics of the stuff I have when I get home.

Here are some better pics of the car...pretty much the most basic stock SC300 ever, nothing special.
And the pics I promised of half of my bag setup...
Gauges, switches, relay, pressure switch and fuse holder
9-wire
5 gallon tank
and UAS bags I'll be using for the front
That's all I have until the rest is delivered...sorry for the crappy pics.

I might be powder coating it. If not, then I'm going to polish it and then have an artist friend of mine paint something badass on it.
My boss and I bought a parts car for $400!!! Super good deal, mainly because it was a complete car with most, if not all of the pieces I need to clean up the interior. That, and the fact that one of our friends payed $300 of the $400 just for the suspension:biggthumpup:
