My Red 98 GS300
Hey Guys,
I am Ant, from Perth in Western Australia. There pretty much aren't any VIP cars over here in the West except for a few that people have imported like that and tidied up (a few celsiors, some gen1 aristos etc). i have an s13 currently but have that up for sale to pay some debts and contribute to the savings for making my VIP car.
I eventually got some nice weather so i could go and take some snaps of the car, which I collected last week 25/6/08. I didn't have my digicam on me though so these are unfortunately from my mobile phone...
It's a 98 GS300 in Vermillion Red, 1 owner, full service history etc, so it is in very good nick for its age. First planned mod is coilovers, then a few bits and pieces like chrome handles and LED tails, then ill do the big save for some aggressive wheels and a custom exhaust system.
Hopefully it'll look a lot better than it does now once lower! haha
cheers,
Ant

racinstylez - thats the plan mate!
in other news, i tried my first mod tonight, debadging the boot. i heated the area, removed the Lexus badge with floss, then cleaned away the goo with some adhesive remover. then i realised due to the car being the age it is i guess, that there were small chips and pock marks etc around almost the whole outline of the word Lexus anyway!
so then i bought double sided tape and re-attached the badge ... haha wasted like 3.5hours including time to buy floss and then double sided tape!

Is it a turbo model or no? I'm guessing not, those would be the V300's right? Or did you get an actual Lexus GS300?

hm lotsa questions alright i'll try and answer them all haha
augdogg - coilovers i am thinking Insurance Group. i am basically just looking thru VIP mags and on the yahoo japan auctions for options, and the Insurance seem the best at the moment. in the same range is JIC FLT-A2 and Anceltion, so i guess it depends what is going when i get the cash together. Low wise i probably wont slam it too much on stock 16s, i think it looks a bit odd. but once i have my new wheels then it will come down to lowest legal height here in Western Australia (lowest point 100mm off the ground).
mrkidd - there are heaps of holdens rolling around, i guess dub style i.e. factory bodywork or bodywork from other special models etc and then 20" etc chrome or black centre wheels, generally tucked up back with the IRS. i suppose its 'aussie vip' type look. :P im trying very hard to avoid looking similar!
we can get import cars, not many pple import LHD stuff though, just sometimes older american muscle type cars on occassion. a fair few imports came through a few years ago from Japan, but laws are tighter now. cars have to be younger than 15yrs old, cant be similar to aussie market models and so on.
Caoboy - it is an actual Australian Domestic Lexus GS300. they were sold here, just not in very high numbers mostly due to price and Lexus didnt have much of a market identity especially back in 98! so there arent many around. It is non-turbo, 2JZ-GE. We never got turbo ones here at all. The only turbo Aristos over here are 1st Gen, as they are allowed to be imported due to not being sold locally.
Bippu pxrlx - cheers man. I bought some Meguirs Plastic Polish the day i collected the car and cleaed the headlights as soon as i got the car home! im still not quite happy with them though, so i may need to take them apart and clean them inside. otherwise im considering buying a brand new set of headlights (just the housings themselves) from Yahoo J for ~$250AU.
TristateVIP - we have Lexus here in Australia. i reckon the brand only setup shop here in about the mid 90's so the GS was probably one of the first models they launched here (id have to look into it though)
Thanks for all the comment people, im having a hard time from buying stuff like window visors and chrome handles, but i know i need to save for coilies most importantly!

Well, i will keep this topic updated. Maybe a Mod can move it to 101 Builds (even though i'm out of 101 at least i'll now where the thread is!)
As a side note, i sold my S13 Silvia last week to an 18yr old kid, so he should have some fun with it. hopefully he doesnt have too much fun and cause any damage to it!
1st Mod was a Blitz SUS Power LM filter panel for my air box. cost me just under $100AUD delivered and i dropped that in a few weeks back. My stocker was dirty and so was the box and intake, so i cleaned it all up. I honestly think it made a bit of a difference to the throttle response, and fuel consumption is perhaps marginally up. So overall it was a good little mod.
2nd i ordered some Stainless Steel Pillar covers from Yahoo J. i was a little undecided if i actually wanted them or not, but decided to grab them anyway. I thought it was only a set of 4 but it turned out to be 6 (rear door pillars too). Finish was tops, fit was a little off at the bottom and top edges, but not hugely and overall they are a nice touch for only about $130AUD delivered. Once i get chrome door handles, boot bar & grille they should look more at home. Below are some updated images with them fitted from the weekend...
3rd Mod was ordering a Chrome Boot Bar from Yahoo J. Cost is looking like about $130AUD delivered and will probably be with me next week by EMS.
4th Mod i found a great price on some brand new Insurance Group coilovers. Best price i was seeing on Yahoo J was around the $1400AUD mark 'Buy It Now' which worked out to about $2000AUD once sent over by the guy i use to buy stuff in Japan (Aussie bloke called Jesse Streeter). I then had a bit of a browse on there on Saturday and found an online store selling them for 980Yen Buy It Now! so pretty much $980AUD plus postage (EMS) gives me a total cost of around $1200AUD to my door! That makes them even cheaper by around $200AU than the local alternatives which are just chinese made re-branded stuff. So i expect them in around 2 weeks.
As a final sad note though, after washing the car and snapping hte above pics with the pillars on, i drove to pick up my g/f to go out for dinner, and in the 4minutes i was in her house her dad reversed out of the garage and into my drivers door as the car was parked on the driveway! so it now has scratches right along the drivers door and has scratching right down to the black plastic on the bottom half of the door. So hopefully my g/f's dads insurance company will come through ASAP with the repairs :/

Thanks for the comments guys, yeah im a big fan of the colour :D
i had a crack at the coils last weekend but i went in blind and wasted too much time 'sussing it out' and getting tools i didnt have.
i'm now armed with a How To guide from CL and some other info so i am going to do the install this weekend. I will take some pics as i do so & when i'm finished. :D
also ordered Chrome Door Handles yesterday so they should arrive next week.
Wheels ive decided on either Gerades or Waffe's so when i make my mind up between those two i will probably try and place an order (next few weeks or so)

hahah i am seriously going to Count the votes on all 3 of the forums i have this on before i order and consider the tally when placing the order.
im hoping to line up a test fit of a set of my old wheels that i sold to a guy last year and he is now selling again. they're 5x114.3 Viennas but i mostly wanna check offsets once my coilies are in. So hopefully this Sunday i can go see him and put them on, theyre 9"+24 and 10"+11. So ill try and take some snaps of that and that will help me choose my offsets for the Gerades/Waffes

Well, i suppose this is a bit of a tease to bump this up with no pictures at the moment, but my home computer died last week so it is coming back from repairs today i think.
Got the coilies in, but i think the rear is a little too low. Yeah yeah no such thing as too low, i do agree and it rides beautiful, but i think its a bit low compared to the front and im happy with where that is at. i really want to keep it semi-practical, so im trying to sit it at around 90-100mm from the ground. at present the middle resonators are about 80mm.
I would leave it, and had decided i was happy with it, until i got to work today. There is 2 pairs of speedbumps in the only Entry/Exit, and one of them leads into a drain hole. So the road dips away and i dragged the whole resonator's length and then the rear left muffler bend over it! and that was crab walking and putting a wheel through the middle of the bump!
So if i do that at least twice a day Monday to Friday im gonna kill my exhaust too quickly. So ill just go up 5-10mm, hopefully just enough to clear. Being auto i think it squats a bit in drive anyway so it looks a bit dicky at the moment anyway.
So i will get new pics at the new height when i do it tonight, and post a couple i took at the current/old height too.
Oh and btw, Insurance coilies are f*cken smooth as!! it rides as good if not better than stock even though i dropped the thing about 3"+ all round!

alright, coilies are in! bit of a friggin mission on the 2GS, much more annoying than on my old S13!
i put them in and set the back a bit low, so some of these pics the back is slightly lower than the front. since it has the fuel tank, plus it squats in Drive, i raised the rear about 5-10mm higher and i think it sits a bit better now. also has a tad more ground clearance (probably around 90mm lowest point now..)

Since putting the coilovers in though theyre so nice and plush i dotn think i can go aggressive offsets. So i plan to soften up the offsets about +5mm all round and just make sure they can tuck okay under compression. otherwise my rims are just going to eat my guards and its going to end in tears haha
chrome door handles look to be arriving late next week.
also organizing the insurance to fix the door damage from my g/f's dad reversing into it, and at the same time the panel guys are doing a cashy for me and removing the rear wing & badges and repainting the boot, so i guess that's a positive!

Bippu - yeh mate! but i cant decide! cant decide what rim, cant decide what offset :pat: haha
I have my front chrome handles installed, but didnt get time to do the rear two so i will do those on Saturday and throw up some pics.
Also put a deposit down with Wilson over at PGMotoring for some tan bellezas for the rear windows (reckon they'd shit me on the front windows cause i rest my arm there!)

So i installed the rear chrome handles today, wasnt quite as hard as i expected, but then i had them all in and done and the doors wouldnt open so i had to take them out again and remove the whole latch assembly and bend the thing a bit so it made proper contact with the chrome handle. opens like stock now though :)
i also increased the pre-load by about a 1/4" all round on my coilies as i felt it was a bit soft and i did a bit of reading on the net on preload and thought id have a play. The 6mm or so increase in preload seems to have done some good and its a bit firmer over small bumps etc, so ill see how it goes and might increase damping by 1 more click too. one downside is though that it did seem to raise my ride height, maybe not quite the full 6mm but probably close to. im hoping itll settle back down a bit more haha
by the time i'd done the handles (after sleeping in most of the morning!) and then the coilover adjustments one wheel at a time using a scissor jack (didnt have my trolley jack at home) the sun had gone down and there was no time to wash the car or take proper pictures. anyway i stopped by a cool building on the way to drop my tools back at my old man's workshop, but unfortunately my camera is shit in low light and though the pics looked good on the tiny camera screen they look shit and grainy in full size. anyway though, here they are..

well, gave the go ahead to my guy in Japan to order my rims today....i ummed and ahhed and agonized over it for like past week, firstly trying to decide if i made the right choice on the rim style, and then over and over looking at posts on offsets.
i have gone with 19x9 +27 up front and 19x10 +24 down back. These are custom specs from Work. Now i know i know, could have gone lower in the offset especially up front. But i did try a +24 on my car and it poked a little much for me at my ride height considering this a daily. if i REALLY cant stand it i can get some 5mm slip ons to bump them out a bit but i think itll be fine. From having my S13 ive discovered its all good and well to make a car that looks aggressive as and gets maximum respect from people on the internet, but when your too nervous about damaging the wheels or getting pulled over by cops then it isnt as fun to drive. I think 27/24 should be a reasonable medium point.
ive probably dropped the name of the wheels before somewhere else on the forums but it seems everyone around here is big on teasing so i will keep my mouth shut on what they are for now haha
ETA last time i checked last week was Early November but i will probably get a confirmation today once my guy in Japan actually places the order.

Car looks great mate! Good to see more vipper builds in oz. I know what you mean about the practicalness and worrying about cops! Better to go a set of rims with the happy medium than have cops on your arse!
Look forward to seeing the rims!

Okay couple of minor updates..
Got the confirmation of the wheel order today from Jesse in Japan, the ETA has been moved forward from early Nov to early Oct! So fingers crossed i should have them by around mid Oct, just in time for my birthday on the 14th maybe haha
I also got offered a pair of Trust SR mufflers for $200 the pair plus postage which i couldnt say no to. they arent what i really want but will give a bit of aggression to the rear end and hopefully give the car a bit of a growl to it until i can afford to shell out over $1k AUD for Aimgain or similar mufflers. My mate works at an exhaust shop so he will install them with a mandrel bent catback system for very little. I'll take some snaps once i receive them.
Also on a more sour note, i eventually got round to ringing my insurance company to add my Lowered suspension on to my policy. basicaly they said i have to get some sort of permit from the pits, but they actually wont permit things like suspension, exhaust and wheels because theyre all adjustable and/or easily removable. In general i also got the opposite feeling than i was initially given by the lady who quoted me, that they realy dont want to insure modded cars etc. So i cancelled my policy on the spot and did an online quote and payment and joined another modded-car friendly company :P

Lemme guess... Shannons? They got my Cedric covered, all mods everything for under a grand
Good news on the wheels... Cant wait to see them on! I can understand about worrying about cops, but worrying about damaging them? If they poke, 10mm isnt going to make much of a difference to judging curbs etc. Just use your mirror!

Dom - nah went with Just Car. shannons pretty much dont like under 25s and also have some pretty major stipulations e.g. always garaged etc. My car is 50/50 between garage and driveway and also is often outside on the verge at my g/f's house (same postcode though). costing me about 1k covered with all mods pretty much same price as RAC that i was with originally. i am also going to get them to do about $4k wheel cover too once i get them on.
As for worrying about damage, well if they are more aggressive and poke further out along with the stretched tyres etc they would possibly be slightly more prone to damage/rash than if they are more inside the body. it wasnt really a major consideration though you are right! it wont make much of a difference. gotta make myself feel better! hhaha
Got Jesse to order me some optional Red centre caps for the wheels too as well as the stock black ones. So i may have the black ones for sale if anyone is even interested in something like that haha I'll just see which look better i supose but i thought red might throw a bit of colour on the wheels. Also got him to order some Work Royal wheel nuts too.

^ i agree a bit mate, i am a little unsure too but they look better in real life than pictures, and once the wheels go on and the grille it should bring it together. it might go a bit lower when i get the 19s but not too much. i think the rear wing removal will help the look a lot too and make it seem lower.
got the message from Wilson at PG that the curtains are in so they should be on the way now too.

Rears should be here Thursday/Friday. They should have maybe an inch more dish, and they're both O Disk.
Okay another update..
Received my 2nd hand Trust mufflers and went up to see my exhaust guy. looks like some buggering about cutting off seized bolts and remaking a joiner bit since the muffler flange angles are a bit off and a bit short. So either way it can be done but not at 8pm on a Thursday and i couldnt leave the car with him unfortunately. Car is away at panel beaters over next w/end so maybe the 1 after.
Car is booked for next Thursday to get door repaired and rear spoiler removed + debadging.
Organized to buy some late model tails off a guy from CL, they have a snapped screw on 1 side and are tinted with dark tint film, but i can remove that and repair the screw and they're about 1/3 of the cost of new ones so they'll do me!
Also today I received my Bellezza Curtains in the mail from PG Motoring so below are some pics of those, along with some snaps of 1 of the mufflers..

Curtains in. PITA to work out but got there. Pics make the colour contrast look to harsh cause the flash is on the camera, it actually looks pretty good match-wise, just looks like a slightly darker shade.

cheers for kind words guys, makes the cash outlay worth it!
i cant see these pics anymore at work so i hope they work..! Car wingless & badgeless:
Also got booked in for tyres onto my wheels Friday, and probably front guard rolling. Still dont know what to do about the rears, because i cant shave them in australia as it makes the car illegal and is pretty irreversible thing to do. So i might get them to roll the rears too and then fork out the cash to get the quarters repainted

okay havent updated for some time in this thread... When it was debadged they forgot to sand down where the badges were cause they thought they were going back on. so i just had it back to them for another day to fix, and in doing so they sanded the chrome off my chrome boot bar :( so now i need a new one of those...
but i got the wheels on, dimpling was minimal on the rear guards, perfect on the fronts. going in for alignment on thursday, but the rear passenger side is quite cambered and i think to get it to be flush i will need the guard rolled further for clearance, which may cause further dimpling. but gotta do what i've gotta do to get them nice and flush!
some pics once i cleaned the car:

^ yeah i feel sortof the same on the wheels esp since i bought them new, but since i daily it & i couldnt shave the guards legally i still feel ok about my choice. Compared to all the sunken wheels around here they still look quite aggressive relateively. i think next time i get an alignment ill get 0.5 a degree of neg camber taken out of the front to make it a bit flusher.
I also want to go a bit lower all round when i can be bothered!
for now i eventually got my trust mufflers on, just 2nd hand ones but better than nothing for now..

Very nice. All you need is a kit now. My brother went to school in UWA, Perth a long time ago.

JTanyo - yeah i am sortof keen on a kit now, i thnik it would finish it off. i have a local parts importing company quoting a lip kit for me that i like, but im just not sure because i have front headlight sprayers on the front bumper which are quite ugly & just a lip kit wont get rid of those!
Nice, i also went to UWA as well, finished my studies back in '05.
ELFATHER - thanks mate, none of my pics do the colour and justice, im planning to polish it and take some nice shots on the w/end
LudeNsol - thanks mate, just keep saving theyre only gonna get cheaper!
