hella cookie cutters on this forum

Thats just what i am noticing..thats really why i try to stay away. i have noticed from being here for awhile..the big thing is junction produce...everyone jumps on it and wants to be the first and ends up having it like everyone else..curtains and a tassle? EVERYONE...now what...kbreak? its the next hot thing. I just think this whole vip trend is going to blow over soon because of all the people who build to fit in. Just like 240s and hondas.

pretty much. but unlike the honda and 240 scene, VIP is wayy more expensive...unless you companies start making replicas like crazy

Can't expect everyone to put Bentley headlights on their cars or make their own wheels from scratch. VIP is a small niche group, so almost everything has been done already.

Just build what you like and don't worry so much about other people. I'd rather build something already been done before and have it look great, than to build something unique but ugly. It all boils down to what makes YOU happy.

Mrs. Fields is delicious BTW.

The bigger the site and style grows, the more cookies cutters you have to expect.

When you go custom, you dont know what to expect. Your vision doesnt always come out the way you had it planned so the risk is there. On top of that, you have down time. Some people dont want to wait weeks or months just so they can have some extra changes (that most people wont notice) done to their cars when they can just buy wheels and a kit that fit and can go on ASAP

Just keep doing your thing and lead by example. Not everyone was born to be a leader so remember that

hmmm... interesting opinion. to me it seems like there's a lot more creativity going into builds lately vs. when i joined (be it, that wasn't that long ago). seems like most of the ppl that have been here longer than me aren't happy with running kits without modification (whether or not they actually go through with it will remain to be seen but everybody that i talk to seems to have something custom up their sleeves) and attention to detail is there.

another thing to consider is the sponsors create trends. a gb on a certain brand sells a few of the same thing by design.

can't hate ppl for liking something, and the nicer it is the more ppl should like it. i respect someone who buys what they like regardless just as much as someone who goes out of their way to be different.

another issue is exsposure. it really takes a while to see beyond the basic brands. someone new to the style with some cash to spend is likely to end up with something like jp or whatever vs. someone who has been in it a while and has broadened horizons.

hopefully what will happen is so many trends will pass that the options will be numerous and builds equally diluted among the choices. either way, i've been impressed with a lot of builds lately.

One can't stop people from replicating your car. Hell, immitation is the highest form of flattery right?

I think that's what happened in Japan VIP scene. Too many people sporting the same old thing. Hence they evolve. Nowadays, a stock aftermarket kit wouldn't even get a glance at car shows without some sort of modification/customization.

Just my two cents.

hm to be honest i thought this when i came into the VIP scene, but that was one of the things that attracted me. there is very much a formula to follow and although individual parts may be expensive, overall it is probably going to be cheaper for me than my S13.

i know you say 'like the 240sx and honda scene' but here in Australia we dont really have a Honda scene, and the S Series Nissan scene isnt really cookie cutter, there are quite a lot of diferent ways to go i.e. Street, Track, Drift, Drag etc all which influence the look and feel of the build. With the S Series cars it's a whole pakcage from wheels to kit to f/g and c/f parts, then to engine and driveline, suspension, interior etc. All of this can be modified and can send your car in different directions, and usually to acheive one 'style' or the other you have to touch on every one of these areas otherwise your car isnt quite done at all.

The thing with VIP is its very much built on the aesthetic imo. that being wheels, ride height, and kit. So really if you get nice wheels, nice ride height, and a nice kit (perhaps a respray too) then you can be VIP. And you dont have to do anything engine wise, plus a ot of the interiors are already quite nice so a few extras inside is about all it takes. So it really is almost 'too easy' to do VIP to those that dont understand it properly.

for example i am a bit 50/50 about my car and if people are even going to 'get it' here in Australia. because next to no-one at least here in Perth has done a real VIP car. that said, there are lots of commodores etc rolling round on 20"+ rims with dumped ride height and 5-6deg negative camber due to IRS. People call this 'pimp' or 'VIP', there isnt any diferenciation. Because it has a subtle kit (normally factory) big wheels, and is low. So if i do this to mine, then it is also thrown in that basket.

I guess what im getting at is there is a quite clear route you can take to 'tick the VIP boxes' and 90% of randoms will think it is VIP.

i think in the 240sx/S13 scene at least over here there is no '1 way to do it = success' because it is all fragmented.

i think the issue lies somewhat in the definition from the external viewpoint of the general public, and a bit in the attitude of those inside the scene i guess in thinking they can jsut grab a bunch of stuff off the shelf and away they go. I guess eventually it'll move on and those cars with all the same mods wont turn heads anymore and people will need to get more creative...!

Well, what do you expect? There's only a 'few' select companies that people can afford, or select items that people can afford from select companies.

The only real way to be different, is to well, be different. That may mean custom, or just something that maybe is harder to obtain or more money to be had in obtaining said items.

i can see what you are saying. i feel drift was the exact same thing. it was just all the same wheels and kits done in different colors. that's one of the reasons i left.

i also left cuz i wanted/needed a 4 door car that was nice inside for my daughter. technically this "movement" doesn't exist in america. for drift i can get japanese parts with their own vendors here in america. JIC HKS TOMIE all have shops here in the us. JP AIMGAIN ANCELTION are nowhere to be found here. so there is a limited amount of availability, and even more so i think there is a limited amount of knowledge in this field. people know junction produce and they can get it from multiple vendors on here. k break now seems to be the same. so it will take time before there is more diversity in builds, and that will be directly related to availabilty!

you continue leading the way and the noobies will follow you, cuz i can guarantee you atleast one of the noobs said:

i saw this Q45 with BMW wheels and it looked pretty sick!

huh?

Junction Produce has had a US division for years now.

Fabulous and Sessions both have US distributors as well now.

Just about every wheel manufacturer has a North American distributor, and most shops can get just about any part you want, even from small shops.

I know what you mean though, it's still not as easy as the tuner companies, but they've (the big ones like GReddy and HKS) been in the US since the first wave of import tuning.

When I was deciding on a car to buy this was a main issue to me. I could have gone the Q45 route (no matter what I wanted a Nissan product hahaha) but then I was going to face this issue where the cookie cutter effect would haunt. I bought my G35 not to try and be some example of anything, but just to be able to see it from my own perspective. We since have been seeing an influx of more G35 owners trying to build in this style and while normally people would get all protective of their knowledge, I share it instead. I'm not here to be alone, but to be a pillar in the community.

I can see where you are coming from though. Hell I've even stated that most platform builds have all been cookie cutter on here..... but as BonB and flexinsteel said, the recent builds being completed have been groundbreaking U.S. wise, and since you don't see any real people on the streets with this style you really stand out anyways. I say don't worry about what you see going on in the forum worry about your county hahahahaha :smiley-rofl:

I'm all about custom. My Honda was complete custom thats what got me so noticed and known in Denver and also in Magazines. I still love Honda I just wanted something not everyone has or you see to often. I found VIP to be very clean, gangsta & different for this country.

Every fool in these quotes is right, although you may see and hear about these products and cars. It's not about you (the spectater), it's about the person driving. I never see another car on the road and I cruz alot (cuz i gotta make moves). This scene is tiny! and almost insignificant at that, considering all the k-cars coming out..

can't hate ppl for liking something, and the nicer it is the more ppl should like it. i respect someone who buys what they like regardless just as much as someone who goes out of their way to be different.

another issue is exsposure. it really takes a while to see beyond the basic brands. someone new to the style with some cash to spend is likely to end up with something like jp or whatever vs. someone who has been in it a while and has broadened horizons.

hopefully what will happen is so many trends will pass that the options will be numerous and builds equally diluted among the choices. either way, i've been impressed with a lot of builds lately.

Ya ...... glad this thread was created ...

shows the difference in opinion and what people are thinking nowadays , but just as blackonblack stated ,

"another thing to consider is the sponsors create trends. a gb on a certain brand sells a few of the same thing by design."

very true , alot of people jump on these

the ones thats trippin bout all this is the one that spends too much time on this forum and see the same thing over and over..... how offen do you see a VIP car in the real world? u don't see them everywhere lik how hondas, drift, etc. was...

u gotta understand, theres always gonna be someone lookin up to ur car and its what inspires them for there build....

just gotta remember, VIP is STRAIGHT GANGSTA.... not everyone and there momma drives a car lik that....
Even though im a noob on this forum, in my honest opinion, its almost impossible to have a car thats truly unique and respected. WidebodyQ pulled it off with the conversion but just like the honda scene, the first conversion was sick, and then after a while it got sickening cuz people who didnt have the means, attempted to anyway. And thats when you get cars that were just thrown together without attention to detail. Not only do people not have the means most of the time, a lot of people dont have the imagination to build something truly custom. Which is why they're "inspired". Too me, I have a VIP platform car, but do i want everything on the VIP check list? nope. haha. no offense to those that do, but im just trying to build a functional car, that looks dope as hell. And if something pops up in my head to do something custom to it, then there you go. NO matter what you buy, someone else will have it. Face the facts. $.02 and i dont know what a "cookie cutter" is.. i guess its something to do with replicating or something, but i remember the dj guy on z90 was it? always imitated, never duplicated. =) and that cookie looks like the ones i used to buy from the vending machine in High School. BVHS. haha

To hell with vip talk...I want one of those cookies!!! (which appear to not have required a cutter)

Seriously..this kind of talk is silly to me. Big Steve said it for me...who cares. Do your thing and do it right. As things grow people will learn and get more adventurous..it's been like that in every car culture..ask Freddie..he knows EXACTLY what I'm referring to.

I'm a noob as far as VIP style goes but I know what I like & dont like. Personally I cant stand Fab or JP - I havent seen one person on this or another US VIP forum with the rims I want (eventually as $$$ allows - taking a massive paycut last week & having to sell my company paid for FJ hurts a lot) or kit I want HERE, so I have hope of being individual in that respect on these forums, but will definitely be unique on the street. I never see VIP rolling on the street, just the forums (or at meets/shows). My recent LS dropped Jaws and snapped necks and it was really a nothing car but nobody had seen a slammed LS - plenty of DUB style but nothing with VIP/EXE influence, and influence is a stretch for description.
Build what you like, what you can afford and what is practical for you, then drive it & enjoy it.

This thread is hella funny!! one minute people are talking about cookie cutter rides and being original and then as soon as you deviate and do your own thing they say it's not VIP. they then tell you which company you should've bought to fit right back in to the cookie cutter category:pat: meanwhile you have people with non platform cars giving advice on VIP :smiley-rofl: if they knew it all why don't they have a REAL/TRADITONAL VIP car?=)

I love cars from all areas of the hobby. I don't give a damn if your car looks like mine or the guy next to you, and I most certainly could careless if you have a more popular "cookie cutter" body kit/wheels or you have a rare one. We're all in this auto hobby for a reason...self satisfaction.

IF you like it, do it, if not press on.

Bottom line, have fun, enjoy the camaraderie and share ideas.

hahahahaha you misunderstand more than you speak foolishly, and that's already a lot. I wasn't going after you on this one and what I was going for was the peeps who want to come in and just reiterate what's already been said without offering any additional insight.

IF I had meant you, I would have quoted you like I have been doing since you decided to direct this towards me. My daddy raised a man that can stand on his own two feet and doesn't need to hide behind a skirt to say what needs to be said to someone to their face. If you felt my comment was about what you said, then sorry if you felt the shoe fit, but mistaking your error, for one I allegedly commited, now that's just foolishness, and I'll call you out on it over and over again.

If you feel so strongly about your supposed "nerve hit" PM with your thoughts and we'll discuss this there, where no one can see either of us get chastised for our errors. Till then stick to the topic at hand and keep the arguing to a minimum, things have changed on this forum and we are maintaining the peace more efficiently by enforcing a zero tolerance policy. Thank you and I'll await your PMs.
