Grant's VIP Style '08 xB build

Hello VSC, this is my build thread for my 2008 Scion xB. I will be building this thing up to be as VIP style as I can. As time progresses, check the later posts.

From page 1 you can see the car from its original setup and you can gradually see how the car changes.

Thanks for looking,
Grant.

Thanks for looking. My UAS should be arriving soon at which point I will dump the shiet out of the car.

I believe I'm the 2nd xB2 with AME's but I'm the first with the the most aggressive AME's. I have 2cm of poke in the rear with 5 inches of JDM lip.

I wanted red ones to match my car. Red, white, and black was the original theme.

They're Rays Engineering though so they're good.

I took off all the stickers. I was going the rice route too much.

Looks 100% cleaner now.

I just need BBK, lip kit, and to install my air kit.

I have hella big tires though.

It'd be nice to have it sit lower.

Thanks for the suggestion.

http://vipstylecars.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=13647

hope this helps your installer with the front struts..

i still have to add what to do to mod the strut bearing.. but to get it lower.. better just to use a pillow ball mount at the top..

OK so we finished 1/2 the install today.

Compressors and tank are mounted up with a custom bracket.

Fittings are all together and on the tank.

Only things left are - airbag bracket welding, airbag install, plumbing, and wiring tomorrow morning.

OMFG!!!

I added like 50 lbs of weight to the back of my car. It lowered my car a bit with all the hardware :(

It came out to $550 for 13 hours worth of labor.

Parts were bought separately, this was only for labor and a couple small things like screws and what not.

Gabe says my OEM struts are too long, they're bottoming themselves out (I have no bumpstops)

I need shorter aftermarket struts.

By looking at your fronts in the pics.. The fronts I think you can go down lower if gabe didnt do it yet..It hard to do if you dont have a belt sander.. or just get pillowball mounts.. I beleive the only company that has them for the 2nd gen xb is Ksport..

Prob can come down about an inch or more on the front if you sand the stock strut mounts.. and prob more if you use the pillow ball mounts.. I havent dont that yet but i know that other with the 1st gens say that using the pillowball mount " camberplates" you can go lower..

The rears i beleive the Echo shocks are shorter and what many with 1st gens are using.. I left my stocks in becuase i still can roll if i ever lost air...

Maybe oneof the 1st gen members can has the part number for the shocks they use.. it should fit becuase it mounts up the same way..

BTW are you on 18s or 19s

Good info!

When I had my Maxima - Stillen made camber plates. But nothing for toyotas :(

Does any JDM/USDM company make anything for Camry/Windom? Perhaps those will work.

I'm on 18s with decently low pro tires. 35 series.

Why's that?

Ksport was OK, it was great.

So Marshall - those metal sleeves inside the bags - do those keep us from going lower?

Yes they do Grant. If those pipe were not in the bags themselves we would be scraping the floor. I am actually grateful for mine since the body kit that I have is 1 inch from the ground. LOL

Here are some more pics that I had during the build. Thanks for the high res pics too!

No real shots until tomorrow when Gabe finalizes the install.

you want my custom made rear brackets? JK Just shave them down..

Also the air line that one of the issues why i made the previa one mount solid.. Not sure of you Locking not has enough room to tap a hole and thread it.. lucky that pervia coil overs had enough room where i didnt have to machine a one.. would have been cleaner but would have took more time.. just wanted to show everyone that dont have high tech tools that it can be done very easyly..

I did send gabe the pics over the phone today.. not sure if he noticed what it was..

just was looking at your coils overs.. looklike there isnt much room to make it bolt on.. the only think i could think of is makeing the perch out of aluminum and Tig welding the perch to the adj nut..

also you you have the 1/2 in line.... if you do might want to reduce that line to 1/4 inch.. way more flexable and easier to work with..

Yeah the perches are aluminum.

I mean weld the steel pieces to the UAS bracket and then just have it slide loosly into the Ksport spring perch slots.

Get my drift? That way when the perch moves, it catches the bag too.

i wouldnt do that.. good idea..

what happens when you hit a bump in the road.. the bugga still floating and than you might do some damage the the nut..

if anything try change the line to 1/4 inch.. and run a 90 out of the bag.

OMFG.

Nightmares on suspension the past 2 days.

I went for the coilover install and got it finished.

But like I said before, the airbag moves around the strut freely and not with steering.

With that said, the fitting would move toward the tire and eventually rupture.

I could not drive 20 yards without blowing a line.

I left my car at the shop and then my installer continued progress.

He ended up drilling a hole in the UAS lower bracket and welding a nut onto it and then running a bolt through that to stop the bag from moving freely.

That didn't work well enough so we welded a piece of steel from the bolt that we previously made to the piece of coilover that attatches to the swaybar endlink. That way the whole coilover moves as one piece.

After all that was done, we thought we were home free.

I made my way home and like 2 miles from the shop, i heard a huge POP! sound. I was like WTF was that?

I made it onto the freeway and I aired up just to be sure I wasnt scraping. My friend who was following me said my rear left was dumped but the other side wasnt. So we pulled over.

I took a look at my front right wheel - it was hella cambered out compared to my front left.

I popped the hood and looked at the top hats.

My front left was fine, but my front right was missing the top hat nut. I was like WTF?

Turns out the cheapo top hat nut sheared completely off the shock and the shock went under the strut tower. The wheel was moving wherever it wanted to.

I limped it home with it banging all over the place.

That night after work, I took it apart. I took out the front right assembly and the top of the shock was nowhere to be found on top of the bag!

I took off the UAS top mount plate and low and behold, there was the shock. It went UNDER the plate! The shock thread was all banged up and pretty molested.

So this morning. We went around shopping. I bought a 12x1.25 die to clean up the thread on the shocks.

Both of the shocks were stripped. It was terrible. I bought 4 brand new 12x1.25 nuts that were grade 8.8 to replace the cheap ksport nuts. So each strut is now secured with 2 nuts on top. I used loctite medium thread sealer to ensure no failure.

After that the rear shocks were banging up in the rear strut tower. I took the cover off to reveal that the cheap Ksport rubber bushings were completely flattened out. So we went back to the parts store and got Energy Suspension polyurethane bushings to replace those sorry ksport ones along with 4 new 10x1.25 nuts to put on top of the rear ksport shocks.

It took a whole morning and afternoon to get all the shopping done. One of the nuts that I bought didnt screw in correctly, I had to use my tap set to clean it off - I totally forgot I had a die set (not that I have too many tools).

Ahhhh. all in all, it was a very productive day. We updated the Ksport suspension hardware, everything is tightened up. And in the future, there will be no more scary failure.

With less camber than in the previous cell phone picture, my front is hella hella flush now. No spacers required. I am still tucked.

Ksports are ok.

Ksport nuts suck ass.

There is a little bit of rattling when I hit bumps because it's metal on metal the bag plate on the top hat.

When the top hat was disconnected it was rattling up the yayness.

Compared to our photoshoot day, with the coilovers, it is about 3 inches lower now in the front.

It is possible to go lower, but my ride height will suffer. Right now I'm driving around with 0 wheel gap.

you should just run the stock shocks.. .. your limiting the up travel andits wants to go up more.. Mine is lower than yours on the rear and the stock shocks isnt holding from droping lower. ZYou have to custom make your upper mounts and make them smaller so it come down lower.

UNless you put some guages in and find out at what pressure you are at when your all full up with the shotened shocks.. OR even getting a digital ride control so you can have it preset to only go so much..

Grant and his Mechanic, Gabe are back at it again!

On Friday:

1) cut my rear top spring perches out and cut my airbag brackets to 1/2 size and then weld the brackets to the frame of the car.

2) Shorten my rear Ksport shocks

3) take my front 225/40/18 T1R tires and move them to the back to replace my rear 255/35/18 T1R on the 18x10 wheel.

4) Install new pair of 215/35/18 General Exclaim UHP tires for the front 18x8 wheel (it's not hella flush however, pretty sunk in, but it tucks well)

5) If I have time, remove front strut/bag assy and camber out to -2* front to be able to dump lower.

...hopefully if all goes well, we'll have a Tsurachi xB2!
