Blew a bag last night
Looks like driving too low will make the control arm rub on the bag. I wasn't aware of this issue. It finally rubbed a hole into my bags and blew. Luckily on my driveway. Anyone with Universal Air on a 2nd gen GS have this problem? Tried calling UAS but I don't think they're in on Sundays. I'm not sure how to fix this..

damm that sucks good thing it happened on your driveway and not on the freeway. Sounds like your gonna half to get a new bag

Yeah I'm really lucky it happened after I parked my car. I know I need a new bag, but I want to know if this problem can be avoided. Air suspension is pointless if I can't drive low.

yeah i have the same problem. i turn the bag after one part gets too warn out.. my Driverside rubs more then the passenger side. for mine its the arm that is connected to the upper control arm, the one that is shaped like a banana. i want to grind it down but i dont know how much load that piece holds.
guy on Clublexus has the same problem with rubbing. warned me about the rubbing.
cant find pictures i took.
i also talked to UAS about this problem before but they dont warranty things like this. fun stuff! so i just bought a new bag ready to be replaced.
what struts are you running again?

So they don't warranty this stuff even though they designed the brackets in a way that rubbing can occur? I'm on stock struts BTW. If they put a small spacer under the bag it would probably clear.
There has to be a better solution than turning the bag once in a while so it doesn't rub all the way through. A bag blowing on the road is a dangerous thing. Would putting the bags on coilovers fix this problem? Since you can raise the bag higher in the wheel well.
I wouldn't want to grind down that control arm either. It looks like it needs to be pretty strong to hold up the weight of the car.

if you locate the bag alittle higher... it will be ok. and i agree, this is totally dangerous, it makes it that much more fun to drive!! haha.. at full down i know my bag is rubbing the metal piece. i can touch it through the wheels.
give uas a call on monday and see what they say. i wasnt in the mood to argue when i called them a while back.

Sucks. I never had a bag blow but I had 3 struts crack and bend to undrivable conditions while on the highway with in the last year. Its very scary. Between potential blow outs and suspension issues, I no longer let my family ride in my car for their safety.

So do any of you guys on coilover/bags have this problem?

I dont know to much about air susspension . but how about wraping some electrical tape around the control arm to stop friction from the metal . just a thought

Definitely a scary issue Ive heard about this happening a time or 2 before makes me think Im gonna stick with coilovers when I do go big body...I too am glad you were in your driveway and not traveling at a high rate of speed...goodluck with UAS on tomorrow

I have this problem on my xB right now the way I have my struts setup. I actually blew a bag already, also luckily in my driveway.
Talk to Zach about a rebuild. He'll make sure it happens. Ended up costing me roughly $40 + shipping.

the down side with rebuild is that there is down time. you need to ship your ripped bag in.

So these bags can be rebuilt? I wonder how that works. I'd rather pay ~$50 to rebuild the bag instead of 150 for a new one.
First of all I want to see what I can do to stop it from happening. Shane, do you know how high I would need to ride for the bag not to rub?

just get more like 1 inch wheel gap or something. or air up more when u go in and out of steep driveways... cause i think most of the rubbing comes from when the wheel gets compressed.

I see. 1 inch wheel gap is terrible. If putting my bags on coilovers will solve this problem, I'll have to do it. I noticed some rubbing noises when backing out of the driveway and turning the wheel. Do you know if it rubs when I'm going straight?

People here about bags blowing and what not and then it makes it harder for other air companies to sell there product, because it of all the stories they here! At least somebody came out and said this. I know alot of folks keep quite about there bags blowing! BUT WHATEVERS!

Sad to hear that Chris...hope for a quick resolution bro.. On that note, air is a costly luxury imo. It looks sick when you can dump it, but at the same time you don't have too roll dumped. Save it for shoots, mini photo cruzes, and parked. I'm still in the world of confined coil-over status, so i'm a little envyous (good ridin though).

Thanks Angustine. I miss coilovers sometimes, because I love to drive as low as possible. But my car is daily driven, and I encounter too many obstacles to be on coilovers. That's why I went with air. This problem shouldn't even happen. I don't know why no one talks about it. Hopefully I can find a solution.

i dont think it rubs when u turn.. only when the wheel is compressed. if you can keep that gap, it should rub a lot less. just keep a eye one it. it wont pop right away, it slowly rubs away...

sorry to here about the bag blowing.
IM going on a year and a half with UAS no problems.. but i never drive it slammed.. but i i do drive it low enough at times if the roads are smooth.. Did many set ups using UAS and i have no complaint nor any of my customers ran into problems.
Did you buy the set up ready to install or did you build the struts yourself? IF it the setup that made to bolt on by them than yes they should warranty it.. IF you did your self the bag rubbing is all your doing.
Lots of things come into play with building it yourself.. you have to make sure bag dont rub. and if it does rub you have to do what it takes to makeit not rub.. you have to remember there kits are universal.
IF it still rubs maybe the UAS bags arent ment for the car.. maybe sleave type bags like the ones air runner uses might be the solution.

Guys I really hope some of you out there with ideas in your head of air being more reliable than hydraulics step back for a minute. I'm going on 20 months now with zero issues, and that includes me driving tucking rim.
In fact tonight I went with a bunch of my Mercedes buddies and cruised all the way from Beach and the 22, down to PCH, and south to Laguna with rim at fender up front and tucking 1" in the rear.
Say what you want, but hydraulics are bullet-proof when it comes to driving conditions. As long as the install is done properly, and the hoses are up nice and tight where they should be (haven't needed to worry about mine), you're golden.

Is the price of a basic install for a hydraulics more or the same as an air suspension? And how about the kit? Is a hydraulic system more or less?
thanks!

A complete hydraulic setup installed will run around $3,000, depending on how "showy" you want your setup to look.

I know people going to think im bias but alot of people roll low with airrunner and still dont have that problem. Pancakes and Antbo rolls tucked rim and no problems. Alot of us drive High because we just dont have the money to pay for a kit or fenders to get fixed all the time. Its not about how low the suspension can go. I rather not fix something because someones tire blew out or some one decided to throw something out on the freeway. I dont know why UAS bag blew out and sorry to hear that Chris!!!!!

If Airrunner sold their struts alone I would be all over them. I don't care for their manual valves or their lack of management. I also I like having two compressors.
I spoke to Zack at UAS today and he told me I had some options.
1. To either redo the upper mount so the bag can sit higher. Custom strut mounts would be expensive.
2. To send the bags back to have them redone so they're shorter. I would lose a bit of lift this way.
3. To put a spacer under the bag to push it higher to clear the spindle. I would lose drop height this way.
4. To go with coilovers. Most expensive way.
I'm leaning towards rebuilding the bags to be shorter for now. I have to get them rebuilt anyway. Might go with coilovers later on. Zack told me it rubs because I have too much negative camber. This pushes the spindle too close to the bag.

If airrunner sold the struts alone then companies would by the strut and then make there sh*t like airrunner. Which would hurt there hustle! Hahhahaha! I wish they would sell there struts alone as well but whatevers. I'm koo w/ mine so far!
And you can add 2 compressors if you want, but I seriously don't see why you would need that many when 1 does the job jus fine. If your raising your car to the point that you are filling up that often then maybe you should get hydros.........jus sayin!
Also w/ the money being spent on having all this work done along w/ the cost of the system, you could have been riding worry free........again, jus sayin!

I've been on UAS for about two years now with even a "while parked" accident under the belt, including all the rework done at the shop for the suspension and having to raise and lower so many times to work on the subframe. Haven't had any problems at all. I hear what some people were saying about Airrunner being better and all, and I do agree to a point, but when it came down to it I bought my UAS system due to the fact that I am local and speaking with Zack made me realize I could have them close by for any issues. I was so impressed with their service and availability that I also became a reseller for them. To this day I still promote them even though I no longer have a shop, but as an informed person I also let people know that Airrunner is available and what vendors they can go through for that system.

I live so close to AF that if I had any problems then they are close by. Also they've installed so many air setups that they are ore than qualified. AF is pretty knowledgable on how UAS & Airrunner works and after seeing the why the airrunner system is built compared to UAS, I was easily satisfied & convinced!
But I guess this all has to do w/ who and how the systems were installed and what car it is.....

y'all know what im on for over 3 years now with no issues, and i roll dumped daily.
but i think shortening the bag and adding a spacer would do just fine. my first thought would be to get camber plates to add clearance but just found that the lower portion rubs right?
if i were u i would just get it rebuilt and find a way to decrease the friction by smoothing out the arm and maybe coating it. keep a close eye on it though. and then if that doesnt work go with the shorter bags and spacer.

I didn't start this thread to have a UAS vs. Airrunner vs. hydraulics war. I'm sticking with UAS because I like the ride/handling. If I want to upgrade to coilover/bags in the future I can.
I pulled apart the front suspension and I'm going to ship the two front bags to Zack from UAS in the morning. Hope this will fix my problem.

Wasn't meant to start a war. I am just sick of hearing people say "hydraulics are unreliable blah blah blah" when I have had the fewest problems out of any air-bag equipped owner I have come across.

Maybe you could go with cylinders in the front? Though you wouldn't have the option of putting coilover shocks on later. Cylinders won't rub, but they tend to be floaty, like a Cadillac.
His options sound contradicting. He says shorten the bag, or lift it. If you shorten it, then it wouldn't rub up top right? If you lift it, then it wouldn't rub on the bottom. See what I'm getting at?
If you have too much negative camber, then why not get your car re-aligned at your ride height? Or did that already happen?

I'm not a fan of cylinders. I like how sporty the Aero Sport bags feel.
He explained to me that the inside of the bag will stay the same, but the outside rubber will be shorter. This should make some clearance since it's like a stretched tire.
I already had it aligned at my ride height. It had around 2 degrees of negative camber in the front. I just figure it was how much camber I would have naturally at that ride height. Maybe the alignment guy was a moron. After I install the bags I'll take it back and tell them to max out the stock adjusters.

RCA perhaps? if you're rubbing on the lower arm (limited GS experience so hard for me to visualize) it should push the lower arm down and in a tiny bit, straightening it out and reducing your negative camber.
may not work for sure but something to look into/think about?

might still need to mount the airbag higher to clear the steering knuckle. don't think 1 inch of clearance will gain him enough positive camber for the knuckle not to rub.
it's k we have a secret plan to make it work :runcoold:

Hahahhahaha! Shins LS is so fun to play w/!
It's digital w/ a remote so when we are at shows, it's fun to make it go up down side to side from a distance and trip people out!
The camera/screen is jus to show how the bags work and all that!

This isn't my car but it's the vertical banana shaped arm that rubs the bottom of the bag when it's slammed.

dude. lol. so there was a CL meet that shin pulled into all monster truck height with those lowenharts (not the peoples choice) and no one looked at it when he parked and everyone was far from it.
shin walks away from the car. hits the switches on the remote, and like there was a swarm of ant rushin the car. it was so funny.
sorry to thread jack. this is the last comment.

ANd about the wheels, It's a company car for airrunner so it's jus to show off the product. Not his personal choice or I'm sure he would have had a kit and a whole bunch of other goodies

yeah either raise the bag up or i would try rubber cementing old school tire innertubes around the very lower section. you can find those innertubes, they are like bike ones but super thick

Make the bag sit higher, and cut the shock tower so the UCA and go through and allow the car to go lower. Best you can do for now, right?

sorry to hear chris.. if u dont put a spacer to lift it, just grind the inner part of the arm? it looks like its barely rubbing, i mean the DUB guys do it and they roll on 22s-24s all day... u shouldn't have any issues...

dude, glad it blew on ur driveway instead of on the road.but i like Steve's idea.cant you just shave that arm a little bit?i think mines rub also but very very lightly.man,i better go check it again.are you going with a shorter bag?if so,wouldnt you have to add a spacer to compensate the loss of the bags length?

This is also the reason why I run hydraulics and why many others are now making the switch. There is a new hydraulic line coming out in January which will be more geared to reliability, and comfort getting away from the "lowrider" aspect.
