VIP during a Recession

I am a veteran, full time student and unemployed american male. I managed to purchase my 2kgs4 and maintain it but that is about the most of it. I had plans to get a honda to become my DD and let the GS project begin but after my job laid me off it has been discouraging. I get just enough from my gi bill to pay my bills with little left over for my JDM fantasy. Man I really hope things turn around for this country soon. If anyone is hiring in the Houston area shoot me a pm!

in a time like this you have to put the main priorities in order. your car will always be there, along with the style, but your welfare isn't as guaranteed.

Thanks man I have started to just think about it in a positive way as possible. I know once I finish my degree in 2010 that I will be back in the rat race. I know the GS will last that long and I just hope there is more jobs then now. I don't speak spanish and in my neck of the woods that is a huge indifference.

dude i dont think it will get any better any time soon.  i hope it will but doubt it.  only thing im tryin to do is keep my shop goin, thats it.  everything else i am willing to let go, well except my girlfriend and my 2 dogs.  i want to keep my employees too, all of them.  as far as my car, house, and all the other luxuries;  im pretty sure ill have to give them up..my lady is making me keep the car, i told her i got 2 other cars i can drive, buts she wants me to hold onto it.  the only money i spend on it are maintenance, gas, and tires.

Right now I don't owe, to any institutions, but I do owe $1000 before I can pick up my Lexus, so that's my priority. Luckily I'm not affected so much by the economic weather, it just so happens that right now I'm trying to build up some funds, rather than spending spending spending.

thanks bro, things arent bad right now.  but i keep hearing things and they r scaring the shit out of me.  come april we start to get really busy.  so im hopin for good numbers.  i may have to get back into competition to try to stir up some business.

yeah recession is hitting hard in new zealand right now.heaps of people getting laid of work lately and i pretty much lost my business because no work coming in(im in building industry)now im forced  to work for my father in law as a warehouse/store person.pay isnt as good as what i used to earn before, but it pays mine and my wifes bills and keeps us alive. so it doesnt look like i will be getting anything done to my sentia in next few months, i want new mags but with saving odd $150 a week will take me months lol.aswell as i want new suspension so i can go lower.etc etc etc....

oh well i know we all will get through this tough time somehow:)
atleast i know i can keep my car so it kinda makes me happy that im not forced to sell it:))

i am hoping for the best for everyone. my business i getting effected a lot by this whole downturn.. effecting so much that i might have to get out of it as its not generating enough income to support the family.. i hope there is a light in my future. trying to be as much optimistic as possible

What do you do?

It is tough times and I don't see it getting better for a long time.  We can't lean on other countries to help us get out of it because they are hurting too.  The dollar is bound to become  worth less and less here in the short term through inflation.  My only solace is that I have almost no bills.  I'm not making a ton, but I only pay for me and my girls cell phone and car insurance both.  The only thing after that is Food and Gas.

I finally have some capital but the way things are looking. I was hoping to spend on car stuff. Will definitely be saving. It really sucks and the way the economy is with businesses needing money, People needing money, it's almost a lose lose situation.

Just hold on to your pennies and hope for the best.

Ya I am thinking about just finishing my criminal justice degree on my gi bill, and joining the Houston Police Department. Seems like its the only viable choice in a depression and the starting salary with the degree isn't bad with job security.

yeah all we can do is try our best to keep our jobs, and minimize spending.  the rest is out of our hands right now.  me and my girlfriend are self employed so the money we make is all on us and how much work we put in.  we dont have any kids yet so it makes it easy.

right now the extent of my reducing spending has just been:
eat at home more
rent movies and download bootlegs instead of goin to the movies
ive pulled registration and insurance off the cars i dont drive very often,  theyll pass smog when i re-register them
stopped buying fish stuff
and the only clothes i wear are usually free shirts from the car industry or our own work shirts, but i havent bought anything in like 5 years anyway. my closet was full of brand new shoes, its dwindling down cuz ive had to bust them out and wear them.

any suggestion for a business owner?... i have tried many different way to grow my business but seems like its not helping much.. even until to the point where i had to let my employees go and now i work 14-15 hrs days with the help with family

It's hard to justify spending money on VIP right now when you are either cutting back on discretionary spending or you are better off scooping up bargains on assets such as property.

Thats sucks. Fortunately I haven't really been affected job and money wise. Our company dropped my pto time a year from 140 pto hours (3 1/2 weeks) down to 120 (3 weeks) but other than that nothing else. None of my friends have gotten laid off either, hope it picks up for you guys.  Modding your car isn't necissary, if I lost my job and had a hard time paying bills Id sell my ride and worry about modding it at a more suitable time.

What type of business do you have? 

Our economy is truly in a horrible state, no need to worry about devaluation of the US Dollar, because most countries in the world have the same problem. Its like we go down, everyone goes down now. (its kind of funny if you think about it) It goes to show you how much the world depends on the USA.

But since we are in a serious recession, how much do you guys/gals spend on your car nowadays?

I mean I have been finding it difficult to continue this hobby.

just keep cutting costs and look toward free advertising

yeah things are tight right now but lets hope for it to get better  soon, my buss is slow at this time i am barely buying inventory and sales guys well i had to let go 2 of my guys which sucks but i had to do it , i just hope i can keep with my luxury line and exotics if not i am gonna have to cut back again to daliy vehicles  pretty soon . but i wish the best to all my fellow members here and lets just try to survive and pass this situation  ,when it come to the vip scene lets always try to help our fellow vsc vendors here i am sure they have cut prices down to help their sales and help us out a little thanks to all ........god bless you all !

You might as well download instead of rent as well.  That's what I do.  Heck, I don't even burn the movies, I just put them on my flashdrive and plug it into my PS3.

I recently quit my job but the job I'm supposed to start is currently on a hiring freeze.  Oh well. At least I saved enough to pay bills for the next couple months.

Wish this was true, but it absolutely is NOT anymore.  Other countries are hurting to because of a lot of the same things we did, they did, others are hurting for different reasons.  The way we got out of the last downturn was when foreign money came into this country and injected or economy with fresh capitol.  That isn't going to happen anytime soon. 

And yes the value of our own currency IS a big deal.  watch this

Well retirement for me being 25 is Not looking great at all , I used to work for Citibank until January Recieved a great job here by the house VS commuting 2 hrs a day esp when gas prices were at their worst ... 
 
I love my job and glad i was giving a chance to become a Senior banker @US bank vs citi bank ... Just today the stock for Citi is 1.02 ! I pulled out my 401k at 12.00  and just have to hold on to it until i see a difference ... 
 
I used to be a mortgage broker until i was layed off and got a job 2 months later ... Hard adjusting and selling random things I dont need or use to much my 78 bottle wine fridge... 
 
with all the friends all over the house all the time ... I had to let them know not to hang out as much ... 300.00 electricity bill for 7 months straight is No joke. 
 
Kepp pushing foward , and keep your head up ... I just dropped 1300.00 on suspension arms for the car and I can say i am in no position to dothat ... but It just finished my project ... 
 
Other than that mod , and all the crazy work to (fix the car) ... Nothing for a while ... maybe a kranze emblem ...   If anything I need to buy more clothes ... LOL  and thats all

Good points on trying to cut back on spending. I have brought lunches to work and eat at home more often. Luckily the wife is in japan so that is even less food being consumed. Switched to driving the 240 and parked the Q for a few months saves few extra bucks on Gas.
Ridiculous but hopefully this state of the economy will better train ppl to spend less and save more.

All we can do is hold on guys and like what everyone says cars can wait family and your well being come first. Lets keep our heads high and hope we pull out of this soon.

Even if it doesn't affect people, saving is still something to be aware about.
The economy has not affected me per say since IBM (I work for) is an international company with business coming from all over the country. But it does not mean they are invulnerable to the affects of the economy. Just b/c somebody ca not spend spend spend with out worry does not mean they can not enjoy the style. They just build slower than other people. :shrug:

In this environment.....no job is safe.  I think the market and economy will be hurting for awhile.  Not to get into politics, but the current administration is looking to spend ourselves to prosperity.....not my first choice, but it is what it is.
 
As far as Houston, I was just down there last week and the job market and housing market look to be in a little better condition than up here in the northeast, but I was only there for a week.

I am hurting. I cut just about every activity that requires money, out of my life. I eat at home now. I havn't driven my car since around New Years. I only go out once in a while and I only see local girl friends now. Summer is almost here but I am not looking to get clothes or sneakers. Instead of getting a hair cut every 2-3 weeks, im giving myself messed up shape-ups weekly with my Mac-3 razor and I get a real hair cut once every 5 weeks.
 
Doesn't mean I plan to stop modding or cut corners with mods. I still have HUGE plans for the car. I am just going to cut corners where I can to get my funds up. :biggthumpup:

not really. i save like  mother fucker. i have enough in the bank to live for two years without a job. and im 24. if you know what you are doing, and dont be a fuck up in the early stages of your life this recession shouldnt hurt you. it shoudl be an advantage, cheap ass houses are awesome. i cant wait to come back. damn near namea  price on a house and car and they will take it in alot of cases.

yeah times are tough right now, i just hope everybody here comes out of it okay ( whenever the end is ) and yeah like a lot of people on here i have stopped spending on stuff i dont need and go out once in a blue moon to ease my mind, the car modding is on hold right now i cant justify myself going out and spending 3-4k on some rims that i really want and another 3-5 on a kit so all that is on hold till things get better then i will get my shit right, but for now if i dont need it i aint buying it!!!!!

Times are tough...It was like "ummm" at first, but the sheer incline of job losses in the half a million range and the 8.1% unemployment rate is starting to shake me...

I'm pretty sure My job is secure (praying for validation), and I'm not hurting much, but I'm starting to get nervous...It's cut throat out here...

I have to admit that I've been affected by the recent down-turn. My 9 to 5 pays the bills and thats stable, but to have fun with toys I need to do more on the side. Over the last 5-7 years its been real estate on the side. I was in a good position right before the crash but I did not sell fast enough (did not know what was about to happen), lost out on the major profits I was going to make. So now all my builds have slowed down considerably. Its back to basics for me, flipping broken cheap cars instead of houses. Takes alot longer and not as much money in it, but gotta keep going.

My opinion on the whole VIP aspect, I think the economy only affects your ability to build VIP if you outsource. Anyone that has outsourced to build a solid car knows the labor is always more than the parts, sometimes almost twice as much depending on how customized. But there are some guys out there that DIY and have skills, those guys won't be affected as much because they do all their own work. This is one reason I recently switched gears from trying to build VIP to doing a old school shakotan build. The VIP one I will likely need to outsource for some of the work, but the old school one I can do everything on my own in my own garage.

I dont agree, in the last few years it has been a steady economic downturn....you guys didnt save for it? anticipate it? Ive been saving since 18 for the future. maybe im just a unique one.

saving still doesn't make you ready for changes in life ... the 2 years you have saved up doesn't help the 7-10 year market . unfolding ... with unemp rate going to 11-12 percent coming near will hurt everything ..

Used car sales are starting to pick up so i'm getting more work finally! January was TOUGH man all bills and no pay.

My only advice is if you are sitting around tuggin your dick with nothing to do go hustle. A guy I work with delivers sandwiches 10 hours a week to get cash, I got another buddy who teaches afterschool classes (but he has a degree for it), one of my other friends is a martial arts instructor on saturday nights and is a chauffeur saturday afternoon. Money is still out there you just don't get it handed to you anymore. Everyone is welcome to go out and get it.

People in Japan who saved every penny they had and slung it at their cars are affected the same as those here who did the same. It's kinda dumb to insult the members who have the hottest cars in the US saying if the Economy touched them, they're wasting their time with "VIP"


I'm not going to write a 3 page post, like i normally do, about this, but people are affected one way or the other...Unless you're in the Military with a Guaranteed Paycheck (like some people *looks around scratching back of neck* ) Then its Liable somehow, some way the economic downturn is going to get at you...

It's affected even TIRE MANUFACTURERS so i don't buy that...sell it to someone who doesn't know any better.

Hustlers are the ones who make money regardless of the situation...Ballers are those who spend money easily because they don't really have to work that hard for it (i.e. don't know the value of flipping those dollars and making more bread)

Maybe the economy takes a huge crap and we all loss tons, but I am trying to put myself in a position that I don't loss as much as others and then I can take advantage of that fact later.

2) I think what Grant was trying to say is if you don't have [B]stability[/B] in your finances then you shouldn't be trying to build a VIP car anyway since your priorities should be on more long term finances.  I would have to agree.  I think the way it was said and the way it has been interpreted could have been a little better but maybe thats just how I read it???:shrug:

You are right about that lol.  The North has been in hibernation because of the winter.  That doesn't wheels were not ordered and air was not purchased by alot of dudes.  Now that the snow is clearing in alot of parts, expect to see a whole bunch of new cars

i understand what grant is saying.  but at the same time i understand how you have been saving for a long time.  there comes a time when you will make a big deciscion that will effect your income, but hopefully you will still be able to save.  what has happened to most is that they were not able to put money aside anymore and things got tough.  everybody makes deciscions and hopes for the best, this time the best didnt happen.

as far as vip or all car mods go, they are a luxury.  and if times are tough they get put on hold.  its like that for everybody.  if youre rich and you forsee times getting bad you just dont by a new helicopter, you keep your old one for a couple more years than planned.  so i think grants statement is true.

i bought tires yesterday... does that qualify for a new mod?

to be completely honest drug sales go up in bad times except weed.  weed is actually a good way to look at the economy.  when weed sales go down, that normally means things are bad. and i am completely serious about this, not talkin bout cocaine or heroine,  only weed.

dont know yet. I have 5 ish months before i find out, but im not putting my eggs in one basket. if i dont, ill buy a cima here and take it with me to germany or wherever i go. otherwise, ill get a q45 in the states and a lincoln. i figure iwth the shit economy i can get one for a good price

if you have a love for something, you'll find ways to continue with it. when building my old 240, i went to school full time and could only work at wal-mart (due to school schedule). i made sacrifices such as not going out to eat, or only eating off dollar menu. vip is the same thing. instead of spending lots of money on motor build, it'll go towards suspension, wheels, ect. even if hard tnimes come, and you are dedicated enough, you will reach your goal. it may not happen as fast as you had planned, and it may kill you to look at a check for bills, that you wish was going to rims, but eventually you'll get the wheels. i mean look at crack heads. they love crack, and have no money. i know this is very extreme comparison, but its true. they give up eating every meal, having a car, home, ect. for what they love. they have extreme dedication. anywho, i just got my q and plan on starting a build but due to house note, trying to get out of debt, and wife wanting a baby, the build will be slow. however, i've wanted to get this thing rolling for a long time, so i've got time to get it done. i guess what i'm trying to say is if you love something, don't let it go. even though it may not be going the way you hoped, if you stay wanting something, eventually you will get it. just my .02

but i think the main thing we've all skipped is the degree to which the economy affects an individual.

a kid that goes to school and live off mom and dad obviously doesnt feel the effect as hard as a small business owner. and i think thats where the line draws.

well good news for me, i now got a job!! but its 4 hrs round trip so the economy will be helping me when i go house hunting in a few weeks and grab a nice house for a nicer price

The point is, you just need to prioritize and save. Save and prioritize. Not a lot of people just starting out will get $3000 to kill every month. But if you set aside $300 every month, for 10 months, you can get that killer set of wheels you always wanted. It's not impossible, you just gotta be patient.
