BMW 740il
alright i need some help guys. I've seen pictures and I've found some for sale. I'm always talking about switching cars and gettn a new one and stuff so right now I will go out and say that I am not sure what I am doing.
I am just wondering about the BMW 740il. I have heard some bad things about them, but I think they look awesome and would be so much fun to drive and own.
Tell me what you guys think about them, know about them, bad stuff, good stuff. Inform me with as much as you know as possible. And if you know any that are for sale please let me know.
Thank you:giggity:

I have an E38, but its the 740i (not the iL) the difference in the 2 are longer wheel base (on the iL) and the iL has the self leveling suspension in the rear (less suspension options if you go iL). They are good cars if you get one from someone who's taken good care of it (as in most cars). However if the car hasn't had the maintenance done they can tend to be a pain (worst then most cars). I'm still pretty new to BMW's but if you go on www.bimmerforums.com (7 series E38 section), theres TONS of info on that board. Everytime I have a problem I get it solved from that board.
There's also a great DIY board (E38.org) with tons of info
Hope this helps, If you have any specific questions shoot me a pm
Oh and I forgot to mention, I'd buy one in the 50k-60k mile range or go higher like 120+ because usually people sell them when they get near 100k because they don't want to pay for all the maintenance that's due around that mileage....

thanks for the help. The one's that i can afford, are really going to be the iL's in the 7-9k range so that limits me on mileage.
yeah my buddy said to stay away from them but i am really growing fond of the car and cant keep my eyes off of them.
when you say self-leveling do you mean it will adjust based on wheel size or???

Self leveling suspension = airbags (I think)
I think its like the lincoln town cars, when you add weight to the rear of the car it levels itself so not to sag in the ass.....lol.....
Here's a pic of mine before I sold my wheels........Photochop drop......

I kinda needed a new daily driver because the starter is going out on my GS400...so I cashed it out on the spot:biggthumpup: Im going to pull sum rims off another car this weekend and maybe build a simple sub box.....then steal an amp from one of the other cars. :pat::smiley-rofl::shrug:
VERY tempted to throw one of our air suspension setups on it...but I dont think I'll "build it"....the stock / housing market has seriously screwed me over.
I should really stop making knee jerk purchases like this

Well, Ive only owned E31's, which are totally different animals in the BMW world. However, one tool that we cant live without is a scanner called PEAK.
If you're serious about buying a 1995+ 740i/il then spend the money to pick one up.
unlike an OB2 reader, you can read the fault codes on the ecu to know what you're getting into before buying....and then erase them to get a current reading. It will also let u reset the dash fault lights ;)

Just like any car especially one pushing 10+ years old. You can expect problems. Every car will be different. The previous owner will have an influence on the car also. Just because it has low mileage 50-70k does not mean its any more reliable than a car with 100+ miles on it. 7's maintence is a little more expensive though and I'de suggest taking the car to get inspected before you buy. It will be the best $300 you'll invest in your car.
