What is the correct price/process to repaint your car?

I just got quoted $5K for a paint job.   Said they would be taking the whole car apart basically.   Hood,fenders,bumpers,doors, trunk etc...   He was showing me stuff from PPG and House of Colors stuff...  Was looking at like a deep rich candy red/burgundy.    I'm wondering if this price sounds right for Labor and materials.    I've never got a whole car painted before so I have nothing to compare too. 

What is the correct process?   Also what do body shops do and cheat the processes...such as paint over paint or whatever else they can do and cheat the customer and claim they did it.

is this for a repaint of existing color or a color change?  there's a big difference...
 
Just make sure you go to a reputable shop...and examine the work they've done...you should get an estimate of EVERYTHING they will be doing...and make it clear that you want everything fixed i.e. dents, dings, scratches, rock chips...$5K is about right if they R&I everything meaning door handles, weather strips, belt moldings, etc..
 
don't know why they'd remove the fenders though...

the reputation of the shop isn't as important as the reputation of the painter. 33flavors made a perfect example of that. and yeah, 5k sounds about right...

candy red will eventually turn pink. i know this as "nissan4u2nv". he has a pink DA LOL, used to be candy apple red about 10+ years ago and some of the top totally faded and all you see is the silver base coat

5K does sound right.and I'd think twice about going with a candy paint.they look damn good when done up perfectly,but give it couple years and it'll look like dirty ass.especially if the car is out in the sun all the time.I too wanted to have my car resprayed a dark candy red/cherry red.

Im going to spray my own car.....Take your time and rent a booth if you got the time do it yourself....the prep is the hardest part.....and if mine comes out great i'll hit yah up and i'll help yah out ....because the products cost about $700 the most for clear , base and primer....but HOK is really expensive....

$5k is about right for a 3 stage paint. paint alone for my PPG Vibrance Candy Cherry Red when I had a tacoma came out to $1200+ for base,candy,clear,hardnener, and reducer.. so yea it gets really expensive for custom colors. Why not doing some research on some stock colors. that matador mica from the new lexus is really sweet! looks like candy when it hits the sun.

well it does sound about right but if you wanna save some cash i would strip the car myself and just have them do the dings and fender work and paint it maybe it will be cheaper thats if you have the time to do so , candy paint is nice like house of kolor and all that but it does fade with time seen it alot in florida with the heat .

make sure they can spray candy if that's the route you choose to take. not just anyone can lay candy. even less can repair candy.
 
cost seems fair-good if they can actually do the work.

Don't forget to ask them if final colorsand & buff are included.

Simple stuff can add up, like replacement clips and gaskets if they get damaged during removal.
On cars like the 2GS, the chrome moldings in the bumpers should be removed prior to painting,
and are challenging to re-use. I replaced mine, at about $50 per bumper. All the replacement clips
to hold on the chrome upper window garnish were over $80...  
I also replaced the headlight housings with new OE housings and removed the windshield before paint. 
We removed the old windshield and rear window prior to paint put a new windshield and upper 
windshield gasket in after the car was painted (best $150 I spent!). 
The glass guy was nice enough to reinstall the rear window after paint, too.

I did a three-tone with some pearl, all in PPG's "Vibrance" paint. Paint, clear , hardener, etc.
alone were almost $1600. Car was in the shop for 10 months.

$5K sounds reasonable for a fairly straightforward spray like you mentioned, but on the low
side for a full color change. Doing a color change correctly is a ton of work.

I did custom fenders, hood, third brake light, bumpers, carbon fiber, etc. and the job was over $10K
with the "good guy" industry deal, including the new windshield, moldings, materials, etc.
I did most of the disassembly and reassembly myself so the shop could focus on prepping the car.
The new colors are close enough to the stock Spectra Blue that we did NOT paint the jambs.

Like I always say: you get what you pay for... if you're lucky!

imo $5k for candy is a bit low, but you get what you pay for... ill admit, ive sprayed candy, and i totally f*cked up... lucky it was a junk car used for lessons... and i probably wont ever spray candy, ever... 
 
have you ever seen the type of work that comes out of this shop? anyone youve met have experiences with this shop?

thanks for the heads up on the color changing over time.   I didn't think about that.   Yeah it was for my F50...but I decided not to do it since most of the paint is actually pretty nice.    I was thinking of doing it because I was flaring/pull or whatever they call it and the quarter and door needed painting so thought maybe this is the time to redo the whole car.  guess not

If its the rear quarters and rear doors, and the rest of the cars paint is still good, you'll save money by just touching up those panels. If they are good, they would only be spraying the rear doors, quarters, and maybe the sides of the rear bumpers.  Also too, their color matching skills. It might look good looking at it head on, but kinda off at a side angle, or visa versa. Most of the time, they will color match in the sun light, so don't get mad if in a parking garage it looks off...
