My 1993 ls4 build thread

Hey guys, recent events on the forum have compelled me to make my own little build thread to give you all something to look at when your bored.  Ill cover my car when I first got it to the progression of how it looks now as well as a few future ideas.

first modification I made were these 18x7.5 drag wheels, I was in high school and wanted something sporty for the car, shortly after this purchase I joined this website and learned the error of my ways. :smiley-rofl:

then clears all around and exhaust tips, nothing really special but this is how it looked for a long while.

picked up the jdm plate, I was totally swept up in all these little do dads and not focusing on my stance and fitment but being a college kid makes it hard.

somewhere in there I also snagged some jdm one peice headlights.  one of my fogs had a massive hole in it and it looked alittle cleaner so it seemed like a logical move.  Id recommend it to anyone.

jp hood emblem was part of an idea I had a long time ago but didnt get to implement until recently.


this was probably the second most exciting day of my build, I was finally doing what I wanted with the front end, something totally different id only seen on one other ls in the states (hope he doesnt mind but his sn is exe.ucf10) your an inspiration to me man.

first one of these actually had bubbles in it.  totally not roberts fault and he was cool enough to find me another one asap.

Sweet dude!! Post more pictures, I am bored, haha.  I remember how in high school, we didn't care about lowering the car when we put on wheels.  I just knew that I had to get wheels first, clear all the orange, and change all the bulbs to clear white ones.  That's how it was for me.

+1 for this thread, I keep refreshing to see when you'll post more pictures.  I am actually at work right now, working the good ole third shift.

then I scrounged up enough money for these used jic sf-1s.  little did I know they were on their last legs and would blow on me in less than a year.

Shortly after this I kinda put the car on hold since I got very involved with my girlfriend.

then I got that crazy ass exhaust that I love so much =) I cant seem to find pics of it for the life of me right now, ill update later on when i locate them.


then last xmas I had been a good boy and saved up so I treated myself to some fabos.
4x4 status and with no camber dialed in equals poke up the wazzoooo

I still go through these phases when I take off the side corner covers. Its actually really easy since I have two sets (one with one without).

pushed it alittle lower and added some camber in the rear, I have a 60 mile commute to school and I rubbed really bad over the big bumps but it wasnt that bad when it was just me in the car. magically my ride had shrunk from 5 seats to 1.

but it still wasnt low enough for me, I went down another half inch or so in the front and basically shaved my tires down with my fenders. I also repaired and threw on an old admiration grill I had sitting in my closet like many others for over a year.

well I couldnt deny that I was in love with my old grill and It wasnt long till that got thown back on. the old admiration is currently for sale but its pending a trade for some air sus stuff :biggthumpup:
 
anyway heres how she looks at this exact minute. EDIT: check out the bottom of my bumper, i didnt want to loose my plastic undercarriage protector so i put a ton of duc tape on it.

I currently have the celsior power folding mirrors and the turn signal caps sitting in my room and those are next on my list. also need some new front turn signals :pat:
 
I bought the euro lip from a guy on ebay but he backed out last second so im pretty bummed. hope another one pops up on the market soon I think it would look great on my car.
 
I also have a ton of grills and those puddle lights sitting around... some day theyll see my car.
 
edit: the air is in! see page 3 for the initial pictures, still needs a good fender roll :thelaw: 

(9/02/10)edit edit: currently on BC racing coilovers, set to 27 in the rear, 25 up front, rides good.  your looking at max high height. planning on tucking these 18s with these lovely coils, needs more fender work :p
 
got a kit on order from a local shop, should be here around the end of the month, no telling!
 
I have some interior stuff too but its nothing worth posting pics of. I like my interiors simple and functional so theres no fusas or curtains to be found here. just a double din deck, napolex shifter and garmin gps.
 
I also have some other parts ive gotta keep under wraps, gotta keep some suspense you know? :runcoold:

part of me misses it when it was stock, so smooth so quiet. ah screw it its too late to turn back!  It started so innocently like you said =)

Man, I have been thinking hard about selling my SC300 to get this LS400 here:

That LS with my Work Euroline DH wheels and air would be a great start.  If I haven't already ordered my Auto Couture kit for the SC, I would jump on this asap.  But right now, I am just comtemplating. :shrug:

You're gonna hate my criticism but I am gonna say it anyway. 

Looks a bit 4x4'ish to me with the wheel well gap and low offset wheels.  The grill is a bit gaudy.  You say you have other grills, you should try them.  The side lamp covers make your car look like an old camry, even though I think it's supposed to look like a UCF20.

I like the execution, but I think you did all the little things too soon.  Definitely needs old school kit to set it off.  I really look forward to seeing pics (if you take any) of the insurance kit.  I don't think it's as extreme snow plow as some might say.  I could be wrong, haven't seen it in a while.

but people say my wheels aren't flush enough...so what do i know...

No prob on chiming in.  I totally understand your mods cause that's how I was with my 240SX way back in the day.  At least you got nice fitting wheels, you just need a kit man.

I'm So Cal all the way... San Diego.  I don't get out much to the events down here.  I am a hermit.  I tend to do my own thing...i'll bring my car to an event soon.  Just gotta paint my rear bumper.

nice LS man, i love the fabo's  and i like the grille without the adapter. Also what lights or l.e.d's are you running on you plate lights?, are those cathode tubes?

with gas prices these days id be really weary of a v8, but if you can afford it id say do it.  try to get him to sell without the dubs for a cheaper price :biggthumpup:

thanks bro I love your fabos too =).  the license plate just has the old regular bulbs in there.  I dont know the number since I havent had to replace them yet.
EDIT: man im an idiot, I thought you were talking about the front jdm plate, the rear has white leds from superbrightleds.com

I remembered seeing your car for the first time and I was like "damn those wheels." Man that exhaust is SICK! Then we all meet again and I tried popping out the dent in your rear qtr with Steve's navi suction cup, but that didnt help.  The fabo's are looking good, wished mine was aggressive.  Can't wait to see the air setup...

thanks jackson, I cant wait to see your car revealed!  I actually got those dents taken out by a passing van full of mexican dudes.  for $60 bucks i got a dent hammering lesson and the dents in my rear removed! so no steve, they arent there, thats why they dont show up in pictures :slap:

and its not as low as it can go, the front hits tire and the rears are almost perfect, unfortunately im going with new tires today and im nervous they might not stretch as well.  after this im going back to federals for sure.

Just pull your fenders more in the front! they can stretch more for sure....

thanks abernfitch, I will be trying on the insurance kit mid september when i finally get my lazy ass down to sacramento, in the mean time im trying to convert my system to digital so i dont have to fidget around with it so much before taking off.  I also have to slow down these scary ass 1/2 inch lines.

All that air installing and you couldn't have put in your HID's?

I love the air but I cant drive as aggressively as I used to.... Its taken me awhile to get used to slowing down and NOT taking on/offramps at 60 lol.

I agree with you on changing out those 1/2" lines, they are crazy scary.  It jolts your car when you play with it!!!  I had 3/8" lines and it was kinda fast, I think 1/4" lines would be perfect...

thank you acleansc4, you have a gorgeous car!  As we speak im getting new valves, an auto pilot digital controller, and these slow down valves which basically just make more resistance for air travel.  should be installed by tomorrow!  hopefully that will simulate the 1/4 speed which is much more practical imo.  I hope you mod your ls! what year is it?

Yes indeed its the easystreet air controller lownslow, sorry it took me so long to get back to ya.  progress has been snails pace but i start a new job in august that will give me the funds to get this back on track, shooting for end of the year finish.
 
specs are 18x11 +17 fronts and 18x13 -4 rears, your damned right its gonna be widebody, im not too crazy about crazy camber.
 
btw i decided on the color, its gonna be webwood blue with pearl flake, its an old ford hotrod color :biggthumpup:

Haven't decided on 1st gen or 2nd gen yet, but I definately miss the scene. I had fun in the MR2 for a little while, but I miss all the space and comfort of my UCF10 :shrug:

uh oh im gettin called out!!  I got a real job in SF so for the moment she needs to be on commuter duty for awhile.  stock suspension is on, and aftermarket wont go back on until after ive fixed everything i broke within the last 2 years lol.  The car is on my list somewhere, I have a goal to finish the widebody this year...  its just maint is more important at this moment in time.

so here we are just a lil over a week later and I already FAILED at not modding the car lol.


I just got my filthy hands on a set of 2009 ls460 projectors and here is the result of day 1!

ill update throughout the week, basically fabbed it into the stock housing and am now working on how to secure it properly while poking as few holes as possible in the plastic.

That would be feasible if i had some need for it, but I did rattle can the housing black for now just to shut you up :)

okay i am done with this glass, ive been tearing into it for 2 days now and while ive removed most of the bumps, i cannot get it too clear up and ive more than reached my cap for time invested vs return.  Im having a clear lense made out of plastic and i have a TEMPORARY lense i made out of pexiglass to protect it for the time being.  no, you may not see pics of this very temp setup as it is ghetto fabbed but waterproof all the same, ill show you comparison pics of the pathetic china hids in one side and the beast ls460 in the other.

they are very rare indeed, I would suggest either buddying up with someone in europe who can access a junkyard for you or do what i did and fanatically check ebay every day until one pops up.  Im sorry to tell you its more a matter of luck than anything..

best bet is either getting it made or buying the ebay clear headlights.

though i THINK depo/maxzone may offer something in their catalog (that they dont actively import but should do so on request) that is close to a JDM/Euro 1pc headlight with a clear plastic lens...

No worries A, (haha i love that, if only joe was a calvin or something so we could be the ABCs lol).  I still think its a possibility to clear it I just dont have that kinda time to waste nowadays so i am having a plastic mold made of my 1 piece lenses for a little under a hundred.

Joe was thinking that they couldnt use my lenses after I sanded them but i dont see why not,  They wouldnt take a mould of the inside anyway or it wouldnt be clear and smooth it would be bumpy right?

anyway i have both headlights in and mounted with the pexiglass lenses and I have to say the difference in output is RIDICULOUS.  I have aimed them evenly so I know im not blinding anyone but when the clear lenses arrive ill do an official aiming sesh with a wall.  I used the stock adjustment bolts with the shroud and it mounted right up.  from a 09 to a 93 i can still adjust my headlights up and down using the SAME bolt hahahaha, you have no idea how happy that made me.

That's hot. It'll go better with the new color you paint the car. Corners pop out a lot though... smoked MIGHT look ok (smoke the inside, not the outside) Or maybe those corner covers would make it look not as big and less "LOOK AT ME!"

Its a long story but those pics are from the test fit and pre-negotiation,  they are getting physically delivered and paid for tomorrow (as well as mounted).

Theyre dipped in black chrome, as adrian stated the pics dont really show it off, but thats a teaser in its self haha.

considering either keeping the finish or ditching it for a polished lip/color matched face look.  leaning towards keeping it and fixing the mild flakage...

definitely keep it...it matches the car so well and it makes those very original....i cant wait to see those on your car.

Im still in shock it rides so well, have the fronts set at 20, rear at 27.  Feels about as stiff as a 3 series beemer with the sport package.

continental contisport 255/35 rear (runs big)

Michelin pilot sport 235/40 for the fronts (squishy)

fender lining has been shaved, front is rolled, rear is flared (needs a lil more)

Current solution is to have a piece of metal fabbed to go under it all and bolt up with the tails, debating on painting it black for a saleen mustang kind of look.

Slowly but surely... Needing new wheel bearings and a new hub set back plans a bit.

It all depends on offset s30zg, if theyre around +20 it will be a breeze to fit, i had those specs on my last set of profounds.

Black chroming the inside of these new headlights with a retrofit (black chrome housing of course) would look great IMHO.

Mess up those headlights and you'll likely never be able to replace them... good luck...

these will need a retro since the lowbeam doesnt have any reflectors. it depended on the fluted glass for some cutoff. transfer your ls460 projectors and u golden.

Thanks guys for the encouragement, I have boiled down what I want to do into two different options so to speak, they both center around the paint color.  I definitely want to keep my color (its not tan damnit its champ) but you never know, the longer i look at the finish of the wheels currently the more i like it. 

 I might try and ditch the retro (would use casper hid shields instead) shave turn signals, and maybe transplant 98 ls fogs kinda like in the avatar <------

Ill incorporate my kit into the build later on, stock front bumper treatment first.

The wheels will need a refinish eventually, previous owner did a great job riding these wheels hard and the lips are flaking.

For the moment I'm going to focus on getting her sitting proper, the ride height/fitment isn't up to standards yet. The corner lights are being sent off to blkonblk for some work, I'll let him reveal details at his leisure.

The rims do not have any stickers or casting, so we are not able to get the exact offset.  The offsets I listed are measured by me.  

Will these fit?  Mods needed?

Dont mind the others, I am a member of site staff and am happy to help you with my opinion. (though they are correct you could have searched next time)

you will have no problems fitting those wheels with stock suspension,  if you plan to lower at all you may need a very mild roll depending on your tire sizes.  If you dump the car you will tuck by a large margin.  Hope that helps!


On another note, updates for my car are coming soon... UAS and wheel refinishing are in order, hoping to have a real update by the end of the year.

Ive sunk most of my money into my wedding (aug 2012)  so I dont have a whole lot to throw at the car.  have a ton of parts sitting around waiting for some love.  Right now im just focusing on maintenance items and keeping it in good running shape.  I do plan on some lighting and brake system upgrades this year and who knows, maybe ill finally find the funds to redo the works.
